Written by Saturday 24th March – and I shall be at the CICERO competition in Serbia! (Where will you and your students be?)
I haven’t yet worked out what the time difference will be, but from about 1pm – 4pm their time students in Sremski Karlovski will be hoping to communicate with students in the UK as well as in France, Italy and Andorra – the Spanish competition will have already taken place on Friday (because everyone goes to the beach at the weekend, of course) and we might catch the end of the Australian one before ours starts. Unfortunately the competition in Tunisia has to be a few weeks later but we will try to set up some separate videoconferencing for that as well.
It was wonderful to see the mixture of languages used by students during last year’s videoconferencing, so if you are with your students in one of the 5 UK venues I will try to greet you in Serbian.
It is still not too late for your students to enter for either or both sections of the competition: a cultural test on the story of Aeneas from Troy to Latium, and a translation from Latin to English, for which they can bring their own dictionary. There are UK prizes of £150, £100 and £50 in three sections as well as signed books and the prestigious international prize provided by our Patron Federico Mayor, who is a former Director-General of UNESCO. This competition really does promote international friendships through Classics.
