Roman Baths
Virgil’s great epic presents a rich variety of female characters. Are doom-laden characters like Dido and Camilla a reminder of what happens if women step beyond cultural norms and expectations? Meet the wives, lovers, mothers, queens, goddesses, furies and more. They are brave, independent, loving, loyal, manipulative, morally courageous, ruthless, violent and vulnerable. We look at what these women bring to the story, and consider the wider picture of women within ancient Roman society. This course is not for complete beginners to Latin: you will read and hear lines from the poem. Longer passages will be read in translation.
