GCSE INSET: The Persian Empire

Classical Association Teaching Board INSET on GCSE Ancient History

The new OCR specifications for Ancient History include a compulsory element on the Persian Empire, 559-465 BC. This is a period study focusing on the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great, Cambyses II, Darius I and Xerxes I. While this is a potentially exciting development, it is also potentially daunting for those teachers who will be leading their students into the study of sources and phenomena that constitute relatively unchartered territory.
This INSET day is designed for teachers of GCSE Ancient History and those who are considering introducing it to their schools and colleges. It may be of relevance to those who are teaching other aspects of Persian history at A-level. In terms of coverage it aims to complement the GCSE INSET being held at Camrbidge (7th-9th July 2017.)
The event offers support in terms of the specifications which focus upon traditional topics including imperial expansion and dynastic succession (http://www.ocr.org.uk/Images/313533-specification-accredited-gcse-ancient-history-j198.pdf), but will also offer guidance on the use of sources and in particular material evidence.
