For general questions and problems.

  • I’ve got a student who wants to apply for Class Civ/Classical Studies or similar at uni. She is quite unlikely to get more than BBB in her A levels and most courses seem to ask for at least one A. I imagine that she’s quite likely to be accepted even with lower grades in the current climate, but I fear the headline grades will put her off app…[Read more]

I’ve just added around a hundred new resources to the site, thanks to many generous souls. All sorts of subjects and topics, and it was nice to see resources for the new GCSE and AL Classical Civilisation specs.

    Thanks, as ever, to everyone.

Forgive the duplication of newsletters this week. A last-minute job advertisement came in after I sent the first newsletter, so I wanted to promote this ad before the Easter break properly kicks in.

Someone has asked me if I can locate a spare copy of the Rhinegold Study Guide to AQA Classical Civilisation. It seems to be out of print.

Anyone have a copy they don’t mind losing? It was in fact a parent who contacted me.

    Steve

    • Unfortunately I don’t, but it might be worth mentioning to the parent that the book is for the old AQA spec (pre 2008?) rather than the current/outgoing one, so unless they have checked the Google preview for similar modules (remembering that the content may well be different), it might not actually be all that useful.

Regarding the new Eduqas Latin GCSE: Has anyone got any ideas about possible grade boundaries for this new 9-1 course? I am doing assessments for the background part of the course and I am trying to establish percentages for the different grades. With WJEC, an A* was 80% so I am presuming an 8 will be much higher, say 90%. What are people’s…[Read more]

    • Almost impossible to put figures on grade boundaries at this stage; there are so many variables. It’s just worth bearing in mind that the general opinion is that, despite Mr Gove’s intention, the new GCSE (as judged by the SAMs of both Eduqas and OCR) and the general subject requirements is no more demanding than the current OCR GCSE and the WJEC…[Read more]

Just let everyone know of this production of Prometheus Bound at St Paul’s Girls’ School NEXT WEEK….

Following in the steps of Bacchae, Hecuba, Medea, Electra, and Antigone in recent years, the classical students of St Paul’s Girls’ School are mounting a production of Aeschylus’s Prometheus Bound in Greek, for one night onl…[Read more]

    Dear Steve,
What you are doing with the resources seems to me perfectly right and proper. Like others who have commented I am very grateful for the use of all the resources in the Classics Library. It is appropriate to restrict access to teaching materials and I agree that many might be less willing to submit resources if access were entirely…[Read more]

    HOUSING AND PROTECTING RESOURCES

I’m bringing this up as a result of the email string below, as such a strong opinion forced me to consider if there is an alternative way of storing the resources you all upload. So if you can suggest changes that can be made which would work better for all, then please leave a comment/reply on this post.

    In its…[Read more]

    • Credit to you for replying after his first email response! Would it be worth emailing Dr T B at XYZ School to see if it really is him?

Aside from that, after all the copyright issues with CLC a couple of years ago, it does suggest that the content creator holds the copyright for their material. By uploading to a secure area of this site, it…[Read more]

      • Dear Steve, Absolutely behind you and enormously grateful for the generosity and erudition of other members – as a disorganised part-timer with two jobs I find these resources a life-saver – and I do count on my students not having seen them before I bring them to class. The current system is simple and easy to use, or so I find, so I for one…[Read more]

    • Well done, Steve. It seems fairly clear that Dr TB does not understand this site nor does he understand teaching. I would suggest that Dr TB takes his own advice and ‘doesn’t bother’.

    • Given my initials, I thought I should make it clear that I am NOT Steve’s recent correspondent. There may well be a debate to be had about resources – as a very part-time Latin Assistant ie not a qualified teacher, I’m not sure I’m well placed to comment – but the aggressive and offensive line taken by Dr TB seems to me to be wholly uncalled for…[Read more]

    • I think any legitimate issues that person might have had on this issue has been rather undermined by the sanctimonious way Dr TB has conducted himself. There is no forum for discussion when someone presents their point with a bulldozer attached to its front; god forbid discussions occurring in any classroom in the country.

I do agree with Steve’s…[Read more]

    • I agree with what others have said about the offensiveness of TB’s messages and it is testament to your forbearance that you didn’t just delete them without replying. I do think it unlikely that this person is really a teacher given his childish attitude and disparaging remarks about the profession. Of course protecting the resources is not…[Read more]

      • I absolutely agree with what the others have said. This site is a lifesaver when I am desperate for a resource and I hope that some of mine have helped other teachers too. I agree with what Catherine said about sometimes seeing my own resources with someone else’s name (including one person who told me what a marvellous resource she had created…[Read more]

    Resources.

The resources pages for GCSE and A Level Ancient History and Classical Civilisation, and GCSE Latin and Greek Literature have now all been updated to include sections for the new specifications (first teaching from this September).

    Hello everyone,
I am reaching out here in the hope that someone will be able to help me out. I teach Latin at an international school in Germany, and have a student currently in year 10 who is moving back to the UK (Sandbach). She is keen to carry on with Latin and do the GCSE, but her new school doesn’t offer it. Is there anyone willing to offer…[Read more]
