JOB | Teacher of Classics, Christ’s Hospital School

Teacher of Classics (Latin) for September 2017

Christ’s Hospital School is a highly successful co-educational boarding & day school located amongst the hills of Sussex, 5 minutes from Horsham, 30 minutes by train from Gatwick and 60 minutes by train from London. Most pupils receive assistance with fees – a large proportion pay nothing, with a means-tested approach for most of the rest.

In its 2012 ISI inspection the school was rated ‘excellent’ in every aspect of its operation. Over the last 5 years, A-level Latin results were 84% A*-B, IB Latin results were 88% grades 7-5 (the top three grades) and GCSE Latin results were 94% A*-B and 82% A*-A. The school also offers Greek at GCSE level (9 candidates last year, 7 A* grades and 2 A grades) and is one of the few schools in the world to offer Greek at IB Diploma level.

Over the last 8 years, 11 pupils have gained places to read Classics at the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge, as well as many others to other Russell Group universities.

The department has its own large, well-resourced classrooms as a permanent base. A 6th form trip to Italy takes place every other year and domestic trips to Fishbourne, St Alban’s and London every year.

Job Description and Application Procedure

The school is seeking an outstanding Teacher of Latin from year 7 to Oxbridge level. The ability to teach Classical Greek would be an advantage. A willingness to contribute to the wider life of this busy boarding school and the department is also essential. Accommodation will be provided.
