    Hi there,
I have been asked to provide an inscription for a book in Latin and I am concerned that I may not get it right so I thought I would appeal to the expertise of this site! This needs to be translated into Latin:
“With grateful thanks to the Bodleian Library for allowing us to recreate MS Ashmole 1431. The Augustine’s Herbal.
    Can anyone…[Read more]

    • I’ve massaged the English a bit to try to create a more natural Latin sentence:
“agimus gratias maximas bibliothecae Bodleiensi, qua sivit ut in hoc libro MS Ashmole 1431 (Augustini Herbal) includeremus.”
You could probably also refer to the “Augustine’s Herbal” as “Augustini librum herbalicum” if you wanted to dial up the Latin. Similarly, you…[Read more]

      [1] Are thanks not grateful?
[2] Thanks are usually to a person, and I have taken the name from the seal.

Does anyone know if the students have to be able to scan the poetry in the EDUQAS GCSE set texts module? The spec says they need to be able to comment on the rhythm but I’m presuming that this doesn’t mean much more than whether the line is fast or slow. Can anyone clarify?
    Thanks!

On the back of Stephen Reid”s post, does anyone know of any extra materials that we can use for the new WJEC Latin course? Will there be a WJEC equivalent of the OCR approved book for the language? Thanks!

Regarding the new Eduqas Latin GCSE: Has anyone got any ideas about possible grade boundaries for this new 9-1 course? I am doing assessments for the background part of the course and I am trying to establish percentages for the different grades. With WJEC, an A* was 80% so I am presuming an 8 will be much higher, say 90%. What are people’s…[Read more]

    • Almost impossible to put figures on grade boundaries at this stage; there are so many variables. It’s just worth bearing in mind that the general opinion is that, despite Mr Gove’s intention, the new GCSE (as judged by the SAMs of both Eduqas and OCR) and the general subject requirements is no more demanding than the current OCR GCSE and the WJEC…[Read more]

Does anyone have any of the old Unit 1 CLC books knocking around that they don’t want anymore? Am keen to get hold of 20-30 copies but am not having any luck on the usual second hand sites.
    Thanks!

I have been asked by my school to put together descriptors for the new 9-1 grading system with a view to using them in Latin for Years 7-11. In the past we have used the JACT levels but, as far as I am aware, there aren’t any 9-1 descriptors available. Is anyone able to share anything they have already done on this? My concerns are how you can u…[Read more]

    • Hi Emma, I am in exactly the same boat as you! I have been asked to produce new descriptors to follow alongside the descriptors of the MFL department but it looks like a lot of man hours to create and I have been putting it off for as long as possible – so if anyone else does have something they could share then that would be great. I can always…[Read more]

      • Thanks Charlotte! I have been working on mine but it seems so laborious and I have no idea if it will work or not! But I am happy to email you what I have when it’s done if you send me your email address?

    • Hi Emma, that would be great! my email is cjones@bournemouth-school.org . I will send you the MFL version too and you can see if its any help!

  • Hi there!
I am teaching the Aeneid for both OCR and AQA (A2) and my students keep asking me how many points they need to make in essays. My answer has always been ” as many as possible in the time that you have, as long as you are giving analysis and evidence for each one”. But is there a magic number that they should be working to? Thanks, Emma

    • Hi Emma,

Looking at past exemplars, and from previous discussions, there is no magic number I’m afraid – but answers including between 10-15 relevant references have often achieved L4/5 at A2. As ever, not a guarantee, or always necessary, as marked to the grid, not on a point by point basis.

      Hope that’s some help,

      Sam

      • Thanks Sam! I was trying to find exemplar answers on the website but didn’t find any. I suppose it all depends on the type of question asked as to how many points there would need to be. I keep telling my students that as long as they show an understanding of a breadth of the material and put the appropriate analysis in, they will be fine.…[Read more]
