There are a few sample GCSE lit exam papers/questions uploaded to the resources area recently which are based on the old spec (2×10 mark questions with 3 mandatory bullet points) rather than the new for June 2012 onwards (1×10 mark question with 2 suggested bullet points). Still extremely useful but should probably be accompanied by a word of…[Read more]

In reply to: Cressida Ryan posted an update in the group GCSE Latin Does anyone have any experience of using Memrise with students? This is an app / website written by a world memory champion, which runs a learning / testing […] View

I have been using memrise for some time and the students find it really helpful. There is already a course for the vocabulary list for papers 401 and 402, including the verbs broken down by principal part, which is excellent. It has got a bit mangled in the transfer over to the new version of the website (not as good as the old version, I think)-…[Read more]

In reply to: Philip Robinson posted an update in the group A Level Latin I have some very able A2 pupils who have been really struggling with the Livy unseen passages in Ch.5 of John Taylor’s excellent book. Is this the […] View

I also set my students an exercise out of John Taylor (5.16). I have compared it closely with the format of the Caesar unseen papers over the last few years. First of all, the number of words to translate is higher in the book ( typically about 80 in past papers). Also, the style of questions does not match up. It seems that we can expect a 6…[Read more]

  • Just had a look at the Literature Paper – there were a couple of unexpected things in the Cambridge Latin Anthology section. First q20 c – this kind of question was not on the specimen paper – it’s straightforward enough, but I fear some of my students will treat it like a style question, even though doesn’t say refer to the Latin. Then the 8…[Read more]

    • I entirely agree with Hilary. Too much of this paper seemed to relate to ”style”, in addition to the expected ”style” questions. This prose paper used to be absurdly easy but now is far more difficult than necessary. Is anything of a lit. crit. nature left for AS?

      • We did the OCR anthology option. This section of the paper seemed fine with some quite nice questions – my lot were OK with it, at least the ones I’ve seen.

  • Below is the text of a message I have just sent to OCR – if I receive a reply I will post it here, but in the mean time if anyone can shed any light on this I would be very grateful, as my students and I are rather concerned about it!! I have just [...]

    • Let us know what you hear! And thank you!

    • It’s my understanding that there are now only 2 bullet points to cover rather than 3, so I’ve assumed 3 well made points per bullet point should be sufficient, hence less writing required, but that’s just a guess. I assume everyone else is aware that there will now only be one 10 mark question – I seemed to have missed notification of the…[Read more]

    • It would certainly be good to know if they are expected to write less. However, there are several pages of extra space available at the end of the paper, so I hope running out of space will not be an issue. I’m trying to encourage mine not to write too much (which they are inclined to do) but mostly because I’m concerned about their running…[Read more]

In previous papers (2009, 2010) a specific section of Met 8 was given to discuss in the 10 mark question – the story of Scylla & the story of Daedalus & Icarus. This was the section which was not used for questions on the rest of the paper. I suppose it is possible that they could do the same again – eg ask questions on 3.4, 3.5 & 3.14 and then…[Read more]

Thank you, Paul & Catherine! A salutary lesson in the myth-spreading capability of the internet, which is in itself important for students to understand!

  • There appear to be two versions of the second sentence of section 60: Et ipsius et patris eius accepi tabulas omnes or Habeo et ipsius et patris eius accepti tabulas omnes Both of these versions appear in texts on this site. The spec says if no edition is specified then latest version of Oxfort text [...]

    • The short answer is that you should go with the first version, which is in the OCT and also used by Mitchell, whose commentary is recommended (indeed there’s really nothing else available).
The manuscripts here are a bit of a dog’s breakfast, with all sorts of variations, but the second version you’ve come across seems to be an unlucky…[Read more]

    • Yes, as Tom says, the first version is the OCT. There’s another manuscript discrepancy at 67 (one version adding ‘pugna’, but this is not the OCT). I contacted OCR about these points and they said to follow the OCT, which is the text given in their student/teacher support booklets. The translation in their teacher booklet follows the other…[Read more]

    Hi Danielle
I stayed in a villa outside Tivoli for a week the summer before last. There are regular train services to Rome – takes about 30mins, I think. The Villa D’Este & Villa Gregoriana are within walking distance of the station, but if you want to go to Villa Adriana (which is amazing!) that is about 5km away and I’ve no idea if there are…[Read more]
