    ha…Eduqas mock exam not education!
    Sorry

  • Julie Wolseley posted an update in the group Group logo of GCSE LatinGCSE Latin 1 week, 6 days ago

Keen to know what others are doing for education mock exams? The specimen language paper is widely available online, so I am reluctant to use that. Am also desperate for an echo and narcissus mock paper. Is Classics the only subject where exam boards do not provide relevant specimen papers for literature? Can anyone help?

  • @juliewolseley Hi Julie, my email address is c.jessop@stmargarets.herts.sch.uk. Many thanks for offering to send the paper. C.

  • @catharine Hello. Not sure what to do with this…….sorry! Can I email you or post the paper if it would be helpful?
    Julie

  • Hello Catharine. I have a 91/100 Epic paper if you want to send me your address.

  • Ha I also have a student who got 49 on the World of the hero, but 84 on art. I would ask for a remark but she is close to the lower grade boundary, so risky. So frustrating.
Are the Art papers often unpredictable? I will certainly request some photocopies to see if I can identify patterns.

    • It’s really hard to see a pattern. My Art results were all quite disappointing last year, this year 2 As and a C. I think OCR should remark, or at least do some sort of a check, automatically where a kid gets wildly different results on 2 papers.

    • That is a great idea. I have emailed OCR to find out. Thank you.

  • Really shocked by some very low marks on the Art paper. Anyone else in a similar situation?

    • My best candidate achieved a strong A on her Hero paper but only a D on her Art paper. Will definitely investigate as she had revised all the source material thoroughly.

      • Thank you Anna. I have a 93 on the hero paper, but 49 on art for the same candidate. Really concerned for the students, but also need to know whether I am doing something wrong in my teaching. Remarks are risky when the student is close to a grade boundary, so uncertain how to proceed. Will certainly get the paper back at least

    • Yes – I have requested the paper back to decide whether we should go for a remark. Deadline for that is today. This is all really annoying because the Art marks are usually fair – we have had trouble with the epic papers in the last two years…

      • Some people feel that art marks are unpredictable , and others that they are fair. There seems to be no clear pattern, so guess we will have to judge each student on a case by case basis. My greatest concern is that I cannot request a remark for a student who is close the lower grade boundary, as that will risk their uni place. Frustrating when…[Read more]

    • That is frustrating. Have you got a copy yet? I have received the copy today and definitely feel that my student has been short changed but there are no comments justifying any of the marks. I think we shall be going for a review as I feel there is no way she can go down, though I know that the terms of reviewing are quite strict now.

      • This is one of the oddities of OCR’s marking now that it has all moved online. RM Assessor must surely have a facility to add comments, yet examiners are instructed not to do so. This makes it difficult for anyone to see why the examiner arrived at that mark.

    Hello there.
Just wondering if anyone is developing any resources for the EDUQAS literature and sources paper. With no specimen from the exam board, I am finding it really hard to try and anticipate the types of question that will be asked. Would appreciate any tips on types of question or teaching strategy from anyone who has taught this before.…[Read more]

  • Like Lizzie, I am hoping to access some marked sample essays for A2, Virgil and Art modules. Both new to me in recent years and would be so grateful for some guidance on marking levels. Many people seemed concerned about the marking of the Art paper, but samples of either module would be much appreciated. Thanks

Wondering if anyone has any mock papers for Catullus and Ovid for 2017. I am really struggling to come up with sensible sounding questions. Many thanks.

I am also teaching Ovid and Catullus for the first time, after many years of Virgil and would be grateful for any sample marked work to help me focus on approach. Many thanks.

  • Have returned to OCR this year after concerns with aqa. A little disappointed with results, but most concerned that the brightest student in the year has got the same grade as the weakest. Makes me look foolish, and I will go for a remark, having looked at the paper, but am concerned following the government’s harsh position on remarks. Also…[Read more]

    • Hi, we’ve been disappointed with the OCR A Level Classical Civilisation results as well, especially the Art and Architecture module. A pupil, normally achieving As and hardworking, scored a C. Is there anyone who has a pupil who scored an A and would be happy to share the paper, so we can see what the expectations are? It seems very unfair on the pupils.

      • Ok so I have requested scripts for students with similar marks for comparison, and there does seem to be a discrepancy between different markers. The same points have not been recognised for different candidates.
I am very concerned about the art marks at A2 as I plan to take this option this year. Before AS levels I got great results on the art…[Read more]

  • Gosh. Always had great results on Virgil at A2, but less successful with tragedy. This year tragedy successful, but Virgil really poor. I have not changed what I do, and really diligent and bright students have been in tears with disappointment. Just feel I am running out of strategies to target improvement when results seem so random. So frustrated.

    • Hi Julie. Our results have improved for CIV3C this year, but I’m still trying to work out the best way to get all students good marks. I marked for CIV4C this year, so will offer advice if I can, but I would say for the moment use the resources on e-AQA, look at the average score your classes got for each question and then get some papers back…[Read more]

      • Thanks Matthew. Have been teaching this module for 10 years now and had such good results in the past. I always look at the results online, but this year has been a massive disappointment and I am at a real loss to explain it. No changes in teaching or potential of students. Just despairing!

  • I am about to start teaching the OCR A2 courses Virgil and the World of the Hero, and Art and Architecture. Having not taught this spec before, I would be grateful for any marked samples from the board. Very grateful for the AS ones I was sent…they were so useful. If you can help, please email me on thejuliewolseley@googlemail.com (not my fault.…[Read more]

  • Hi Hannah.
I have just returned to OCR after 10years with aqa. I only changed to aqa because I wanted to teach the Iliad. Now however Iliad features on OCR spec so I am returning to the fold. Comments about the new A Level are really important, as whatever you do in September is likely to face great changes. If you need to start in September, my…[Read more]

I am also teaching the Catullus/ Ovid option for the first time. With so many great resources available on this website, I was surprised to find nothing for this spec. Is there something I don’t know???? With so many changes to current exams, I would also be grateful for any materials or guidance for the poetry. My email address is…[Read more]

    • Hi Julie. I am in the same boat. I was starting to think they had been places somewhere else and I had missed the notification. Has anyone seen any resources for the Catullus and Ovid GCSE lit for this summer?

  • I have changed from AQA to OCR this year, and would like any advice about changes to assessment criteria in the last 10 years. I notice in particular that context questions which used to be worth 10 marks, and now worth 20, and assume this means that students are required to write in more detail; almost as much as the 25 mark question? Am teaching…[Read more]

    • Dear Julie,

It used to be 10, 15, 20 for the context questions and 55 for the essay. That changed to 10, 20 , 25 with the essay being worth 45.

The 10 marker is AO1, factual recall. The 20 and 25 marker are AO1 and AO2.

If you email me, I can send you some past scripts and any material I have re: assessment. My email address is…[Read more]

  • I fully understand Lynn’s concerns that leaving aqa does not help others, but I have tried to petition for a change. On 3 courses face to face , and one online, at great cost to my school, I have repeatedly requested representation from the chief examiner for the tragedy module, but to no avail. I think that, as teachers, we are entitled to…[Read more]

    • Julie, I understand that you want to talk to people at the top but are you aware that current Ofqual rules prevent the Chief Examiner and the Principal Examiners from attending these meetings. This has been in force since the problems a few years ago when journalists reported that they believed examiners running courses were giving away questions.…[Read more]

      • Thanks Jo. Yes I am aware that rules have changed, I think about 2 years ago, but my experience predates this, to when courses were run by those who knew the subject matter, and the criteria. Why else would you go on the course?
Incidentally, I should be clear that aqa never compromised professionalism on the courses I attended, and support was…[Read more]

  • I have had concerns about the marking of the A2 tragedy paper for several years now, which I have registered. The problems are compounded by the fact that the chief examiner for this module never attended any training courses, or online training, and the person running the course was unable to answer questions specific to the tragedy module. I…[Read more]

  • I also have had issues with the marking of the tragedy paper for a few years now. Feedback on inset courses has been very poor, with no one able to answer questions on the requirements of this particular module.strangely my results were good this year for tragedy, but lower on our usually more successful module. I think the concern remains that…[Read more]
