Further Details on the CA site!
The CA is proud to launch a brand new creative competition for 2024, open to everyone, inspired by the ancient world and in honour of our CA President, Anne Carson. Dr Carson is an exceptional poet, classicist and translator, renowned for her innovative translations of ancient texts such as Sophocles’ Antigone and the poems of Sappho and Catullus, and for her book An Oresteia, which won the 2010 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. She was the first woman to win the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry.
The judges are looking for writers of all ages to get involved and be inspired by the ancient world and particularly look forward to receiving entries from writers of diverse backgrounds and identities.
The Competition
The Competition is free to enter and is open to anyone worldwide. There are two types of poem you can submit:
Original – a poem you’ve written in English, in which you draw inspiration from the ancient world. There is no specific theme or prompt, so let your creativity run wild!
Translation – a poem, written in English, which is based upon an original text written in an ancient language. Many entrants may choose to translate from Latin or Ancient Greek, but other ancient languages are acceptable (indeed, encouraged!). Your translation can be literal or free. You might want to explore more about Anne Carson’s own style of translation here.
Age Categories – there are three age categories. Please ensure you enter the correct category according to your age as of 23:59 BST on 5 April 2024. The categories are:
Junior (aged 11 and under); Senior (aged 12-18) and Open (aged 19 and above)
