JACT Latin Summer School – Monday 19th to Saturday 31st July, 2021

19 July 2021 - 31 July 2021

I am delighted to announce that we are now open for applications to join us this Summer. Please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. The usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join the beginners’ group. After 18 summers at Wells Cathedral School, we will be relocating to Harrogate Ladies’ College for 2021; may I stress that the location is the ONLY change – in every other way we intend what we offer and deliver to our students to be identical. Harrogate is better for U18 students particularly – just as safe with a lot more shops, cinema, theatre, museums etc. and plenty of nice places for the adults to visit in the evening. York should be good for a day trip and Hadrian’s Wall is a fantastic addition to our repertoire for the middle weekend. www.latincamp.co.uk (our own site) has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and highly regarded UK schools), the facilities and accommodation, our typical programme of events, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally. It also has a very simple online application form which is now live. We were delighted with the success of the remote affair of Summer 2020 – students and staff alike made the very best of it – but it was not a patch on what the live version can deliver. The classes, grammar clinics and talks can be effectively replicated remotely but that’s about it – so much learning happens in all the “in-between” moments, be they in small groups between lessons sat out in the sun, or at night in the boarding houses. That said, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz, the site visits, the staff play, the costume party. It’s about discovering, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists, making contacts and friends for life. We intend to be live once again for all of these reasons. (Non-resident students will be welcome as before.) In the event of this still being impossible due to Covid we will revert to a remote version once again (price tbc but below 50% of the live course fee) and people will have the option to either switch to this or withdraw altogether with a full refund. There are no current plans to run live and remote concurrently but this will be reviewed when we have a better idea of numbers. So if you know someone who is sure they would not be able to join us live but would be interested in a remote option, please have them send me an email to contact them on in due course should this become available. Please do email me on if you have any questions after looking at the website.
