SUMMARY:Come\, See\, Be Inspired: Experience Classics at Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Classics – the study of ancient Greece and Rome\, of Latin and Greek\, and of the tremendously rich ‘afterlife’ of the ancient world in Western History and Culture – is for everyone! We want to share our enthusiasm in a new initiative addressed to teachers and pupils in Key Stages 3–5: come visit us at Cambridge and experience both Cambridge and Classics hands-on! You do not currently need to study Classical Civilization\, Ancient History\, or the ancient languages – an interest in doing so is enough! It is possible to learn \nGreek and Latin at Cambridge regardless of one’s A-level subjects. \nAn example programme for the day: \n(We can also accommodate later start and end times or half-day visits) Around 10:00:   Arrival at the Faculty \n10.00 – 10.30:    Welcome and settling in \n10.30 – 11.15:    Talk by a Cambridge academic on a Classical subject\, tailored to the age and background of the group \n11.15 – 11.30:    Break \n11.30 – 12.30:    Tour of the Museum of Classical Archaeology \n12.30 – 14:00:    Lunch in either the Faculty or one of the Colleges\, hosted \nby one of our ‘student ambassadors’\, fielding questions \nabout studying at Cambridge \n14:00 – 15:00:    Optional supervision-style class with a Cambridge academic \nThe initiative is addressed to schools in the maintained sector\, and we are pleased to be able to offer help with travel expenses and provide refreshments and lunch here in Cambridge free of charge. The places for each date are strictly limited\, so please be in touch early. If you are unable to make any of the dates\, we will try to find an alternative day for your visit. \n19th November 2014; 10th February\, 6th March\, 19th June\, 24th June 2015 \nWe hope the prospect of visiting the Faculty appeals to you. Please contact Jennie Thornber for further details at jlt39@cam.ac.uk or on (01223) 767044. \n

SUMMARY:Experiencing the Roman army: the Vindolanda writing tablets and Roman frontier culture
DESCRIPTION:   Wednesday 24th June 4.10pm Performing Arts \nShrewsbury High School \nExperiencing the Roman army: the Vindolanda writing tablets and Roman frontier culture \nDr John Pearce\, King’s College\, London \nThe writing tablets from the Roman fort at Vindolanda\, just south of Hadrian’s Wall\, are the most significant archaeological find from any Roman frontier in the last half century. They comprise ink documents with enormously diverse content\, from military memos to party invitations\, written by\, to and about the soldiers stationed there. The lives of these auxiliaries can thus be glimpsed in a way rarely possible for the Roman army. Drawing also on the results of digital imaging\, this talk will consider the insights the tablets give into the experience of soldiers on a frontier. In particular it will examine the ways in which men recruited in northern Gaul became ‘Romans’ during their military service and how far the culture of their homeland endured in this distant posting. \nAll welcome! Free! \nPlease email Jo Lashly on j.lashly@shr.gdst.net if you are interested in coming.
