DESCRIPTION:8-WEEK INTENSIVE GREEK AND LATIN SUMMER SCHOOL\,\nUNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK\, IRELAND \nJune 22nd – August 13th 2015 \nFor the 16th year running\, the Department of Classics at UCC offers an intensive 8-week summer school for beginners with parallel courses in Latin and Ancient Greek. The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research\, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum. SUMMARY:GCSE Classical Civilisation: INSET for Teachers
DESCRIPTION:This year the Classics Faculty at Cambridge University is running an INSET day for GCSE Classical Civilization for the first time on Saturday 27 June. The aim of the day is to allow you to explore new insights into the subject\, to provide possibilities for enriching the curriculum for your students\, and to discuss ideas and best practice in teaching. \nThe programme will be: \nKeynote Talks:\n11.00 – 11.50: The songs the Odyssey knows\, Prof. Tim Whitmarsh (Leventis Professor of Greek Culture\, University of Cambridge)\n12.00 – 12.50: Ovid in Augustan Rome – and Down the Ages\, Dr Ingo Gildenhard (Lecturer in Classics and Academic Access Officer)\n13.00 – 14.00: Lunch will be provided by us. \nCurriculum Enrichment: \n14.00 – 15.00: Workshops\nOption 1: Using online resources to enhance your teaching\, Stephen Harrison (experienced Classics film-maker)\nOption 2: Material culture and ‘Visit us at Cambridge’: making the most of material Culture and our Cast Gallery\, Jennie Thornber (Museum Education & Outreach Co-ordinator) \nPlenary Teaching Discussion Session:\n15.00 – 16.00: Panel discussion led by Dr John Taylor (Former head of Classics at Tonbridge School and author of several text-books) \nThe day is open to all teachers\, whether they are subject-specialists or not\, who teach Classical Civilization at the moment or who might be interested in doing so in the future. Current and prospective PGCE students are especially welcome. Thanks to a generous grant from the Classical Association the day is completely free to attend and we have a limited number of hardship bursaries available to help with travel expenses.
