DESCRIPTION:Wolfson College\, Barton Road\, Cambridge CB3 9BB\, United Kingdom | Tel: 01223 762356 | Email: skc1000@cam.ac.uk \nA Holiday History Camp for Secondary and Sixth-Form Students: 19-20 August 2015 \n\nIf you are thinking of applying to university to study humanities in the future\, and want something to add to your personal statement\nWhether you are interested in classics and the ancient world\, or just want to enrich your CV\nIf you already have Greek language in GCSE or A levels\, or you don’t know any Greek at all\nWhether you’d like to learn and use the Greek alphabet\, or work entirely in English\n\nCome and join us for a two-day adventure in the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge. We will introduce you to the expeditions and conquests of Alexander the Great through the text of Arrian (2nd century CE). We will make electronic maps of his journey using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software\, while also discussing key issues such as heroism\, politics\, empire and conquest. At the end of the two days you will\nreceive a certificate of participation. You will also be able to: \n\nImprove your knowledge of geography and history\nImprove your ability to discuss and debate historical issues\nReceive training in using mapping software\nDevelop research\, IT and other skills\nExperience working collaboratively in a team\nExperience something of what it is like to study at the University of Cambridge\, to be in the same environment and use the same equipment and software that researchers use for mapping and recording historical and archaelogical information\n\nThe Camp will last for two days (19-20 August 2015)\, from 9:30 to 3:30 each day\, with a one-hour lunch break\, a visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum\, a tour of Cambridge and other activities. \nIt is run by Civilizations in Contact\, registered charity No. 1148995\, affiliated with the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies\, University of Cambridge. It will be led by a postdoctoral researcher with a Cambridge PhD and a PhD student in the Faculty of Education\, as well as several adult helpers. The project follows on from a successful project on this topic run during the Easter holidays (http://www.research.ames.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/chinastudies-\nrg/public-policy-engagement/historycamp). \nThe charge of £50 per day for the two days (£100 per person) includes teaching\, materials\, the museum visit and the tour. A small number of bursaries are available on receipt of a letter from the school confirming the need.
