DESCRIPTION:8-WEEK INTENSIVE GREEK AND LATIN SUMMER SCHOOL\nUNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK\, IRELAND\n\nJune 18th – August 9th 2018For the 19th year running\, the Department of Classics at UCC offers an intensive\n8-week summer school for beginners with parallel courses in Latin and Ancient Greek. The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research\, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum. DESCRIPTION:Increase your Language Provision and Stand out in the Crowd \nHarry Potter\, Percy Jackson\, Lord of the Rings\, even Magnum ice creams – your students love Classics already! Capitalise on their enthusiasm for all things Greek and Roman by weaving Classics into your curricular teaching. \nLatin and Classics is changing\, emerging as an engaging support tool for the delivery of the National Curriculum. This taster session presents an accessible\, modern and relevant approach to Latin and Classics. \n  \n  \nFREE EXPLORATORY SESSION AND TRAINING \nClassics for All and Notting Hill and Ealing High School (NHEHS) are pleased to invite you to a free\, half-day exploratory session and training on Key Stage 3\, 4 and 5 Latin and Classics at NHEHS on Wednesday 27th June 2018. \nClassics for All is a charity\, which works with state schools across the UK to widen access to Classical subjects. NHEHS is a leader in education for girls and enjoys a reputation for academic excellence at both the junior and senior levels. \nClassics for All offer free support and training to schools who would like to explore the possibility of offering Classics to their pupils. \nWhy might Classics be relevant to your pupils? \nLatin and Classics are engaging support tools for English literacy\, and the study of Modern Foreign Languages.  Ancient History and Classical Civilisation are widely respected A Level options\, and with training (offered free by CfA) can be taught by non-specialist teachers. This exploratory session will use case studies and empirical evidence to demonstrate how the subjects are: \n\nsupported by modern materials that promote accessibility to students of all abilities\nan excellent support for English grammar and literacy for students of all abilities\, promoting increased and enriched vocabulary\, and deeper understanding of English grammar\nan appealing path to increased cultural access for all\, including EAL students\naccessible as a KS3 language option\, or complementary to other MFL learning\nideally suited to cross-curricular aims for History\, Maths\, Art\, PSHE and Science\n\n  \nWhat will these sessions and training cover? \nThe initial exploratory session will: \n\nexplore in detail the benefits of including Latin and Classics in the curriculum\npresent the courses and materials available for the teaching of Latin and Classics\ndiscuss the best pathway for your school to introduce the subject\n\nThe session will also introduce Primary teachers to Latin and Classics at KS2.  If you know of any Primary School Headteachers or Language Coordinators who would be interested in attending\, please pass this information on to them. \nSubsequent sessions will train staff to be classroom-ready for the teaching of their chosen Latin and Classics course. \nThe Logistics\nInitial exploratory session: Hosted at Notting Hill and Ealing High School\, Wednesday 27th June\, 5 – 6:30pm.  Refreshments will be provided. \nSubsequent free training sessions: By arrangement with each participating school. \nThe trainers:\nCharlie Andrew is a Classics graduate teaching Latin and Classics across Key Stages 2\, 3 and 4.
