DESCRIPTION:8-WEEK INTENSIVE GREEK AND LATIN SUMMER SCHOOL\nUNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK\, IRELAND\n\nJune 18th – August 9th 2018For the 19th year running\, the Department of Classics at UCC offers an intensive\n8-week summer school for beginners with parallel courses in Latin and Ancient Greek. The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research\, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum. DESCRIPTION:Repton School\, Derbyshire.  July 7th -12th 2018 \n Course Director: Daniel Paul | Course Secretary: Kate Baylis \nApplications accepted from 11th September! \nWHY COME? \nIf you are aged 16 to 19\, are really interested in the ancient world and would like to further explore all things Classical\, this Summer School is definitely for you! \nWhether your strengths lie in art\, drama\, literature\, language or history\, coming to the summer school is an ideal way to find out more about the Classical World and decide which aspects you would like to study in the future. \nThe Summer School gives you the chance to: \n\nlearn about aspects of the Classical World you have not studied before;\nstudy with tutors who have specialist knowledge in their fields of interest;\nbroaden your knowledge of topics you have already studied;\nstart learning Ancient Greek or Latin;\ntake part in the performance of a Greek comedy or tragedy;\nmeet students from different backgrounds with a shared interest in the Classical World.\n\n  \nTOPICS \nThere are six one-hour teaching sessions per day\, of which students attend five or six. The emphasis is on discussion and active participation. The topics offered include: \nLiterature \n\nHomer’s Iliad\nGreek comedy (either one play in detail or an overview)\nGreek tragedy (either one play in detail or an overview)\nVirgil’s Aeneid\nAncient epics\nMyths and their transmission\n\nHistory \n\nMinoans & Mycenaeans\nClassical reception\nAthens\, the birthplace of democracy\nAlexander the Great\nFinest years of the Roman Republic\nFall of the Roman Republic\nJulio-Claudian emperors\n\nCulture \n\nArt and Architecture\nWomen and Gender in Antiquity\nBarbarians in the Ancient World\n\nLanguage \n\nIntroduction to Ancient Greek\nIntroduction to Latin\nIntermediate Latin (for those with GCSE Latin or higher)\n\nPhilosophy \n\nPhilosophy Ancient and Modern\nSocrates & the birth of Philosophy\n\n  \nVENUE & ACCOMMODATION \nThe Summer School is held at Repton School\, which is situated in a beautiful village 8 miles south of Derby. Students are housed is in comfortable\, modern rooms with use of a common room and kitchen. The cost of accommodation is £240. This includes all meals and the use of school sports facilities. \nTEACHING STAFF \nThe staff on the Summer School are experienced and highly qualified teachers drawn from a wide range of schools and universities.
