SUMMARY:LATIN SPELLING BEE 2020
DESCRIPTION:Alert!! The Latin spelling bee is back on the 25th March 2020. Take part in this great event. Teachers will have the opportunity to compete and listen to renowned classicists. Confirmed guests: Michael Scott\, Edith Hall\, Caroline Lawrence\, Steve Hunt\, Simon Elliot\, Caroline Bristow and many many more. Please see for more details on the attached document. This is a great opportunity to bring all students who do classics together.\n\n \nGUIDELINES AND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION \n \n\nFollowing the success of the last year’s spelling bee\, Harris Chafford Hundred (RM16 6SA) is taking the lead to deliver this unique and wonderful event for one more year. If you are interested in reviving the renowned story of Caecilius and igniting students’ spirit for Latin and Classics\, then take part in the 4th Annual\n\n \n\nLatin Spelling bee on the 25th March 2020 ( 09:30- 16:00). An event full of surprises and prizes from eminent classics authors and organisations\, but also a day where all schools come together to celebrate Latin.\n\n \n\n1. Every school/classics department is required to conduct knock out rounds. Subsequently\, each school will bring the best 5 students. The aforementioned group numbers must be exact and followed with no more or fewer students\, so the final scoring is fair for all schools.\n\n \n\n2. The words that students need to know are up to stage 9 from Cambridge Latin Book 1.\n\n \n\n3. This competition is appropriate for students up to year 8 or those who are currently doing the Cambridge Latin Coursebook 1. This will provide fairness to all participants. Upon confirming participation\, a vocabulary booklet will be sent to each school.\n\n \n\n4. The participation fees for each school are 30 pounds. This is to cover all the awards and certificates given to the students\, the performance of Medea and CPD provided on the day by renowned classicists and authors: Michael Scott\, Edith Hall\, Arlene Holmes-Henderson\, Steve Hunt\, James Watson\, Caroline Bristow\, Mair Lloyd\, Caroline Lawrence\, Simon Elliot.\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nLunch will be provided for all members of staff.\n\n \n\nThis special day will be structured with various challenges such as spelling tasks\, listening tasks\, finding Latin words\, picture-based tasks\, English to Latin and vice versa. After the completion of the aforementioned tasks\, those who reach the final round will be asked to construct sentences from English to Latin\, therefore some level of grammar will be required.\n\n \n\nThe event is supported by the Classical Association. Certificates will be awarded to all students. Prizes will be awarded to those students who have achieved the highest score and in addition to that\, the best performing school across all tasks will receive the Bronze Laurel Leaf which will be kept for one year.\n\n \n\nPlease confirm your participation by email to book a space for your school as spaces are limited.\n\n \n\np.iakovou@harrischaffordhundred.org.uk\n\n \n\nLooking forward to seeing and welcoming you to this great event.\n\n \n\nYours sincerely\n\n \n\nMr Pantelis Iakovou\n\n \n\nHead of Classics
