SUMMARY:Intensive Course for School Teachers at The British School at Athens
DESCRIPTION:INTENSIVE COURSE FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS\n \n3rd – 7th April 2020 \n \n\nThe British School at Athens invites applications to a four-day intensive CPD course for UK school teachers. The course is intended both for those who already teach the new GCSE and ‘A’ level in Ancient History and Classical Civilisation\, and also for those who have never taught Classical subjects before.\n\n \n\nThis is a four day CPD in Athens that includes:\n\n \n\n Sites tours around Athens (including the interior of the Parthenon) + a day trip to Mycenae\n Lesson plan and resource workshops with David Hogg: all teachers will leave the course with a set of new lesson plans ‘ready to go’ for immediate use in the classroom\n Object handling session with antiquities from the BSA Museum collection\n Full access to the BSA library\n Participants receive a museum pass\, granting access to Greek sites and museums for one year\n\n \n\nThe course is aimed both at those already teaching Classical Civilization and Ancient History\, and also at those who have never taught the subjects before and would like to see how to get started.\n\n \nApplication Form | Provisional Itinerary \n \n\nParticipants will follow a four-day programme combining tours of key sites\, classes on interpreting and teaching material culture\, group sessions on sharing and creating teaching resources\, and workshops for writing lesson plans. The course is tailored closely to the current OCR and SQA syllabus\, but will also be of interest to those who are unfamiliar with these particular exam specifications. By the end of the course\, participants will have an excellent first-hand knowledge of the topography of Athens\, and will have developed their own set of resources immediately ready for use in the classroom.\n\n \n\nThe course will be co-taught by Michael Loy (Assistant Director\, BSA) and David Hogg (Head of English and teacher of Latin and Greek\, Kelmscott School). Participants will be guided around the Acropolis (including the interior of the Parthenon)\, the New Acropolis Museum\, the Athenian Agora\, Mycenae\, and the National Archaeological Museum. There will also be an opportunity to handle ancient artefacts from the BSA’s museum collection.\n\n \n\nAll participants will receive a museum pass\, granting free access for one year to all public archaeological sites and museums in Greece. There will be a couple of hours of free-time built into the programme each day so that participants can explore Athens at their leisure\, and we are happy to arrange (at an additional cost) extra days of accommodation in the BSA hostel before the start or after the end of the course. Throughout their stay participants will be full members of the BSA and will have full access to all School facilities\, including the library.\n\n \n\nThe course fee of €400 includes half-board accommodation for four nights in the BSA hostel\, travel between sites\, entrance charges to sites and museums\, a number of group dinners and lunches\, and a resource pack with plans and study materials. Furthermore\, the BSA is delighted to administer a number of bursaries of up to €200 (in certain circumstances\, larger awards may be made). Travel to and from Greece is the responsibility of the course participants.\n\n \n\nFurther information and an itinerary can be obtained from our website (www.bsa.ac.uk)\, and application forms should be emailed to the Assistant Director\, Michael Loy (assistant.director@bsa.ac.uk) by 21st February 2020.
