SUMMARY:Fragments\, a New Play about Euripides and Papyrology\, by @LASwiftClassics
DESCRIPTION:In the backroom of a library archive\, three papyrologists pore over some tattered fragments of papyrus\, 2000 years old. Could they be the remnants of a lost masterpiece by Euripides?  \nThe ancient text tells the story of Aeyptus\, a boy determined to avenge his murdered father and brothers. But how can he succeed when almost all of the script is missing? \nPiecing his story together will take you on a journey around the fragments in your own mind: memories\, assumptions\, things half-heard. \nInspired by the vast collections of ancient papyrus stored in museums around the world\, FRAGMENTS is an irreverent take on an ancient lost play: combining anarchic performance\, lo-fi imagery\, original music… and a whole lot of conjecture. \nThe Playground Theatre\, London: 14 April – 6 May – book tickets here \nThe Old Fire Station\, Oxford: 12 May – 13 May – book tickets here \nExplore the production at www.potentialdifference.org.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a pre-show talk aimed at school students on 26th April\, on the theme of ‘What’s lost from the ancient world and why does it matter?’. It will be suitable for A Level or GCSE students of Latin/Greek/Classical Civilisation. The talk will be held in the theatre venue (The Playground) at 5pm. The talk is free of charge. \n\n\n\nThey can offer school groups a discounted rate for tickets to the show itself: teachers should contact natalie@potentialdifference.org.uk to discuss your needs and she can arrange a code.

SUMMARY:‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’ - Dr. Andrew Shapland (Ashmolean)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 11th May\, 7pm – Dr. Andrew Shapland (Ashmolean)\n‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’\n\n \n\nMythical Knossos was the location of the palace of King Minos and the Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. After over a century of excavation at the site\, archaeologists now regard it as the centre of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation\, the home of the earliest farmers in Europe and a thriving Greek and Roman city. This talk will trace the history of exploration of Knossos\, beginning with the early travellers searching for the mythical Labyrinth and ending with more recent discoveries\, which include human sacrifice. It will pay particular attention to the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans\, whose archive at the Ashmolean is the single most important resource for understanding the site of Knossos. The talk will coincide with the Ashmolean’s 2023 Labyrinth exhibition.\n\nFor further details: CLICK!\n\n \n\nAll talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Talks are not recorded. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 for visitors. Refreshments available from 6.30pm.
