Discover the palace of Knossos\, and the search for the labyrinth\, in this major exhibition.\n\n \n\nThe palace of Knossos\, discovered and excavated over 100 years ago\, was the centre of a Bronze Age civilisation of people we now call the Minoans\, named after the legendary King Minos.\n\n \n\nThis will be the first UK exhibition to focus on Knossos and will include over 100 objects which have never left Crete and Greece before\, alongside discoveries from the Ashmolean’s Sir Arthur Evans Archive.\n\n \n\nFor further information and bookings\, see here.

SUMMARY:Sanskrit Study Group with the Education Renaissance Trust at Lucca\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever been curious about studying Sanskrit\, the ancient Indo-European language that predates Latin and Greek and is the classical language of India?  This summer the Education Renaissance Trust will be offering classics teachers this opportunity at their annual July conference in Lucca\, Italy.  The study group will be led by Warwick and Elena Jessup\, who have spearheaded the teaching of Sanskrit at St James Schools in London.  St James has been teaching Sanskrit as an intrinsic part of its curriculum since its inception in 1975.  Through the years\, the Sanskrit faculty at St James have developed a systematic course and textbooks which have enabled them to teach this subject in a Western context. \n\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\n\n\nThe event will be held at the beautiful Villa Bocella (see https://www.education-renaissance-trust.org.uk/teachers.html and the enclosed flyer for more information.)  There will be time to experience\, enjoy and explore the Sanskrit language\, as well as relaxation and reflection time\, socialising with other teachers\, and delicious food cooked by chef Allegra McEvedy.  No prior experience is required\, and all study materials are provided. \n\n\n\nYou may ask\, “Why teach Sanskrit?”  Sanskrit gives students an excellent classical training that enhances their linguistic abilities.  It also offers students philosophic insight into Eastern thought\, which is increasingly important in today’s global community.  Students who have Sanskrit GCSE on their CVs always stand out from the crowd. SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Ancient Philosophy 2023
DESCRIPTION:University College London (Some courses are available in an online format) Monday 10 July to Fri 14 July 2023 \nFURTHER INFORMATION AND TO BOOK\nWhat are the origins of the world? How can we achieve happiness? What is the best form of government? Is democracy good? These are only some of the questions which ancient philosophers tried to answer more than 2\,500 years ago. Their bold and unprecedented enterprise prompted an intellectual revolution\, the relevance of which has not since faded. The Summer School in Ancient Philosophy aims to follow the steps of the ancient philosophers in their enquiries on the world and human life\, and explore their continuing importance today. The Summer School offers a five-day programme covering the major themes and thinkers of Ancient Philosophy. \nThere will be four classes each day\, between 10:30 am and 3.30pm. Courses will be held in person unless otherwise specified. For more details about the modules’ format\, please see below or get in touch with us. Students will have access to a variety of online material before and throughout the course. The fee is £140. The course is not residential. Bursaries may be available for certain categories of students and will be granted after the end of the Summer School. \nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people. Groups will comprise students with similar levels of knowledge of the subject. Classes will consist of lectures\, close reading of texts\, and debates and will touch on a variety of themes\, including ethics\, metaphysics\, and theories of knowledge. Texts will be studied in translation\, though some classes will be offered in the original language. The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding. Students are expected to actively participate in classes\, and they will be invited to discuss and critically engage with texts along with other students and teachers. Our tutors include some of the most talented and passionate teachers of ancient philosophy in the London area and beyond.
