SUMMARY:LATIN CAMP 2024 (Mon 22nd July to Sat 3rd August)
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \n\n\n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2024 dates are Monday 22nd July to Saturday 3rd August\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally. \n\n\n\nThe usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join a beginners’ group. I attach the 2023 daily routine and programme of lectures\, grammar clinics\, trips and events which will give you an immediate idea of what we are about. I also attach my own report on the 2023 Summer School. (Hard copies of fliers will reach schools shortly.) I would be grateful if you pass all this on to anyone at all who might be interested. \n\n\n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.) \n\n\n\nAt our core is the intensive preparation and reading of Latin texts. This happens formally in small teaching sets of very similar ability and experience but far more unquantifiable learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. It’s about discovering\, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists\, making contacts and friends for life. \nProgramme | Director’s Report\n\n\n\nPlease do not hesitate to email me (d.stephenson@warwickschool.org) if you have any questions or indeed suggestions – I would love to hear from you. \n\n\n\nYours sincerely\, \n\n\n\nDavid Stephenson Director JACT Latin Summer School

SUMMARY:Teacher Courses at the JACT Greek Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Week-long teacher courses are available at the JACT Greek Summer School\, held at Bryanston School. https://www.greeksummerschool.org/teacher-courses/ This year we have added a NEW course for those wishing to cover/revise the language material beyond GCSE and prepare for/support their A level literature teaching.\n\n \n\nIf your school cannot offer funding\, bursaries are available thanks to support from Classics for All and the CA.\n\n \n\n\n\n \nCourses offered\n \n\nBeginner: Week 1\, Sunday 28 July – Sat 3 Aug. A course for teachers with little or no Greek at present – no prior knowledge is assumed. Greek to GCSE Chapters 1-5 will be covered.\n\n \n\nIntermediate: Week 2\, Sunday 4 – Sat 10 Aug. This course assumes some knowledge\, i.e. the three noun declensions and common verbs in present\, future\, imperfect and aorist tenses. Greek to GCSE Chapters 6-9 (approx.) will be covered.\n\n \n\nGCSE: Week 1\, Sunday 28 July – Sat 3 Aug. A refresher of the main constructions and linguistic features at GCSE level\, and reading the Homer and Herodotus set texts.\n\n \n\nA level (NEW): Week 2\, Sunday 4 – Sat 10 Aug. This course is aimed at teachers who will be teaching Greek in the 6th Form or to A level. The course will assist with the transition from GCSE: it will focus on the main constructions and grammatical forms beyond GCSE\, and will provide some experience of reading from a range of current A Level texts\, both prose and verse\, along with strategies and tips on answering A level style questions.\n\n \n\nPlease contact the Director of Studies\, Maria-Elpiniki Oikonomou\, at jactgreekdos@gmail.com for more info.

For non-resident students\, the fee is £660\, which includes tuition\, full use of the facilities and all meals except for breakfast. The residential fee for the one-week teacher courses is £495. If you need help with these costs\, please check our Bursaries page here (also accessible via the menu above) for further details.\n\n \n\nStudents MUST be 16 or over by the start of the course.\n\n \n\nWe expect applications to be submitted by the student applying for a place. The email address you use to register will be how we keep in touch about your application\, so make sure it is one you check regularly. We ask for these details so we can contact the parent/guardian to confirm their permission for the application and keep them informed as necessary.\n\n \n\nApplications and bursary forms should be submitted by 31st March. If we are over-subscribed\, we prioritise applications from beginners and pre-GCSE students\, and students with no access to Greek on their curriculum. We don’t work on a “first-come\, first-served” basis\, so you don’t have to rush to apply early. You should hear the outcome of your application (for a place or a bursary) by the end of April.\n\n \n\nLate applications\, submitted in April and May will be considered\, but spaces will be limited by that stage.
