SUMMARY:Vindolanda Tablets Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In the first and second centuries AD hundreds of Roman soldiers were based at the fort of Vindolanda near Hadrian’s Wall. Some brought their families with them. They sent and received a constant stream of letters on wooden tablets\, several hundred of which survive today and provide a window into life at the fort. \nIn this workshop participants will explore these letters (both their contents and their form) and create Vindolanda-style tablets of their own. \nThe workshop is led by Professor Eleanor Dickey FBA and Dr Marigold Norbye\, experts respectively in ancient languages and in Roman palaeography. No knowledge of Latin is needed\, but those with Latin will be able to use it. A unique opportunity for teachers wanting to deepen their understanding of the Vindolanda texts and how we can use them.
