SUMMARY:Latin Day School: Cleopatra – An Egyptian Queen with George Sharpley
DESCRIPTION:CLEOPATRA at Roman Bath\, with George Sharpley Saturday 25th April 2026\, 10am-4pm\n\n\n\nNews of Caesar’s murder in 44 BC must have come as a shock to Cleopatra. He was the father of her toddler son and their host in Rome where they had been staying for nearly two years. They left Rome for Alexandria almost immediately. With them went Cleopatra’s young brother Ptolemy XIV\, another guest in Rome\, and Cleopatra’s joint ruler. Soon after reaching Egypt\, she had him murdered. \n\n\n\nAs aristocratic families go\, the Ptolemies are in a class of their own. They clung on to power for centuries\, skilfully employing incestuous marriages\, divorces and close-family murders. \n\n\n\nThe last―and not least―of the Ptolemies was Cleopatra. We’ll examine her time as queen of Egypt\, her family background\, and look at the literary evidence\, sifting the evidence for bias\, political hostility and sensationalism. A dull story it is not! \n\n\n\nhttps://www.romanbaths.co.uk/event/ancient-world-cleopatra-george-sharpley

SUMMARY:Policing the politicians: political control in democratic Athens\, a lecture by Chris Carey
DESCRIPTION:Dr Chris Carey\, Professor Emeritus of Greek at UCL\, will be giving a lecture at the school entitled “Policing the politicians: political control in democratic Athens”. Here is a summary of the talk from Dr Carey:\n\n \n\n“In Athens the ultimate power rested with the people. But for the daily business of the city from waging war to cleaning the streets Athens like any modern democracy had to hand power over to active politicians and administrators. The lecture will explore the ways in which the sovereign people ceded power while exercising control over those it chose to serve it.”\n\n \n\nA very timely topic\, with democratic politicians around the world assiduously attempting to extend the limits of their power.
