SUMMARY:Classical Mythology and Creative writing at KS2 and KS3: FREE CPD for teachers
DESCRIPTION:From Classics for All… \nClassical Mythology and Creative writing at KS2 and KS3\nFREE CPD for teachers\, Thursday 5th July at UCL – exact time to be confirmed \n\nAward-winning children’s author\, Philip Womack\, will use some of his classically inspired young people’s fiction to explore  the value of mythology as a springboard for creative writing. \nIf you would like to register your interest for this event click here. Look out for further details of this event in emails from me.  It promises to be an engaging and lively afternoon. \n“Ever since I can remember\, I have loved the classics\, starting with the Usborne story of Bellerophon and Pegasus\, and continuing on into the Iliad and beyond. Classical myth is the basis for so much of what is around us: so many writers of all kinds continue to work with myth. Only recently we have had Colm Toibin’s The House of Names (about Orestes)\, and Madeleine Miller’s The Song of Achilles. \nIn this session I will discuss my passion for Classics and classical myth\, introducing you to three works which are based on the myths of Bacchus\, the Minotaur\, and of the Trojan War\, sometimes in unusual and surprising ways. We will engage with creative writing exercises which you can deploy with your students at Key Stages 2 and 3\, and we will discuss ways that you can use myth (and language)  in the classroom and across the curriculum. We will look at the wealth of options available for your next steps\, from useful and entertaining interpretations to the source materials themselves. This will be an exciting and stimulating event which will help to raise the profile and enjoyment of classics in your schools.”

SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Homer
DESCRIPTION:University College London\nMonday 23 July to Friday 27 July 2018\nNew for 2018\, the Summer School is collaborating with the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus and offering the opportunity to study Homer in Nicosia\, Cyprus\, from Sunday 28th July to Thursday 2nd August 2018. The course will comprise of three days of classes (between 10.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and two days of archaeological visits\, as well as lectures and screenings in the evenings. Travel and accommodation should be independently arranged. \nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching in Homer. There are five language and literature classes each day (between 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.) as well as lectures and other events after the classes. The fee is £120. The course is not residential. Bursaries and travel grants may be available for certain categories of students. \nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people. As far as possible\, groups comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, and they will find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation or commentary practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Homer in the London area and beyond. \nThe Summer School in Homer will cater for a wide range of interests. It is expected that a substantial number of students from both schools and universities will apply\, but also mature students who wish to learn Homeric Greek or learn more about the Homeric world. Our principal concern is to provide a thorough programme of language and literature learning in a lively university environment. \nCultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus\nSunday 28 July to Thursday 2 August 2018\nNew for 2018\, the Summer School is offering the exciting opportunity to study Homer at the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus. For students wishing to attend the course in Cyprus\, attendance at the Summer School at UCL is encouraged but not required. The course is comprised of three days of classes (between 10.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and two days of archaeological visits\, as well as lectures and screenings.
