There is also a careers panel and the students are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the speakers throughout the day. DESCRIPTION:The Sussex Classical Reading Competition will be held this year at Roedean School\, Brighton on Tuesday 5 March from 4.30pm-6.45pm.\n\n \n\nThere will be passages of Latin for pupils from Year 5-13. There will also be Greek passages. Please email me at rmi@roedean.co.uk for details of the passages and more information. The competition is open to all schools in the South East. Do consider bringing pupils along\, it is a relaxed event\, usually involving some costumes and a certain air of frivolity. The pupils can read from the passage and do not need to learn it by heart. There will be food\, plus it is still free to take part!

DESCRIPTION:Thursday 7 March 2019\, 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall\, London \nThe Cemetery In The Age of Pericles https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/pericles-funeral-oration-cemetery \nIn 431 BCE the Athenian statesman Pericles delivered one of the most influential speeches of all time\, his Epitaphios or Funeral Oration. The occasion was at the funeral of the first Athenian soldiers to lose their lives in the Peloponnesian War. This lecture examines the history of this beautiful site\, the momentous occasion on which Pericles spoke\, and the ways in which his speech\, recorded by the historian Thucydides who was present at its delivery\, has informed subsequent epoch-making orations from Lincoln at Gettysburg to Kennedy and Obama.

DESCRIPTION:A weekend course by the Institute of Continuing Education\, Cambridge University. \nCicero was Rome’s leading orator and this weekend you have the opportunity to read one of his superbly moulded speeches: in Pro Caelio\, Cicero defends young Marcus Caelius Rufus on charges of political violence. This is no dry legal speech\, but one in which Cicero uses his acerbic rhetoric to attack his client’s lover\, Clodia – painting a vivid picture of the violent times of the Roman Republic. If you prefer myth to the reality of the court room\, then choose to read Book 3 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, where you will encounter mad dogs\, a fiery thunderbolt and a boy falling in love with…his own reflection. There is never a dull moment in Ovid’s witty re-writing of Greek myth. DESCRIPTION:THE CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION\nLONDON GREEK & LATIN READING COMPETITION 2019\nThe 2019 competition will be held on WEDNESDAY 13th MARCH at Queen’s College\, 43-49 Harley Street London W1G 8BT (parking is not available at the school). The competition will be held in a single round. The event will begin at 2:00 pm and finish at about 5.00 pm. We will break for tea after the first two sections\, from about 3:00 p.m. – 3.20 p.m. \nSchools and individuals not entering candidates for the competition\, but who would like their staff or pupils to learn more about spoken Latin and Greek\, perhaps with a view to entering another year\, are warmly encouraged to attend as are friends and parents of the candidates. Home educated pupils are also invited to enter any of the sections. Commemorative prizes will be awarded. \nThe competition is in six sections\, with ONE ENTRY only from each school per section.  \n\n Beginners’ Latin\, open to pupils who have not yet completed 5 terms of Latin (either an individual\, a pair\, or group of 3 candidates)\, CLC Bk I\, ad villam (adapted).\n Beginners’ Greek\, open to pupils who have not yet completed 5 terms of Greek (either an individual\, a pair\, or group of 3 candidates): Greek to GCSE\, Part 1\, J Taylor\, The Cyclops (3) (adapted)\n Pre-GCSE Latin\, open to one pupil who has not yet taken GCSE in Latin: Virgil’s Aeneid Book 2\, lines 544-558.\n Greek Dialogue\, open to an individual or a pair of candidates at any stage: Euripides’ Medea\, lines 321-345.\n Open Latin\, open to one candidate at any stage: Ovid\, Amores\, Book 2\, 6 On the death of his mistress’s parrot (cut).\n Greek Chorus\, open to a group of 6 to 10 pupils at any stage: Euripides’ Medea\, lines 410-445.\n\nN.B.  No candidate may be entered for more than one Latin section. His talk will introduce students to his innovative and award-winning virtual 3D model of Ancient Rome.\n\n \n\nThis model makes ancient Rome accessible to thousands of pupils and students by virtually recreating the city\, including vast public buildings such as the Colosseum. This digital model of ancient Rome has proved to be an incredible teaching tool and has won the Guardian and Higher Academy National Teaching Excellence Award in 2014. How creative is the process of a 3D reconstruction of an ancient city? How can one start making their own digital models of the ancient world? Can 3D reconstruction prompt us to ask questions about the sources that inform our understanding of ancient Rome?\n\n \n\nThe talk will be followed by a Question and Answer session and it will be of direct relevance to anyone studying a Classical subject in years 9-13 and\, of course\, to anyone who is interested in Classics\, History\, Archaeology and/or Computer Science.\n\n \n\nThere is no charge for this event. Students under 16 should be accompanied by their teacher but sixth formers are welcome to join us independently. This open day is open to all students (UK and abroad) interested in pursuing a Classics degree. Find out more about Classical subjects in general\, but also the specific degree programmes offered by Oxford and Cambridge. Both individuals and school groups are welcome. DESCRIPTION:News from the organisers of this year.s CICERO event…\n\n \n\n​This year’s competition for Sixth Form students (S4-S6 in Scotland) will take place on Saturday 23 March 2019. It’s a challenging and engaging competition with plenty of fun\, and has three rounds – Latin translation\, Cultural Quiz (this year’s topic is mythological animals – think Cerberus\, the Hydra and others!) and a team quiz. Students can take part in the Latin competition and/or the Cultural Competition. There are four regional centres this year – Harrow School in North-West London\, Bristol Grammar School\, Liverpool College\, and George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh. SUMMARY:Iris Festival - 27th March 2019\, 3.30 - 6pm
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce our next Iris Festival – celebrating Classics\, Art\, Archaeology\, Natural History and Science\, and Anthropology – on 27th March\, 2019\, 3.30 – 6pm. \nThere will be a large area dedicated just to classics at the festival\, with a wide range of visiting museums\, such as the British Museum\, Ure Museum in Reading\, and Ashmolean\, all bringing interesting exhibits to explore and handle\, as well as Re-enactors Comitatus filling a whole room with ancient Greek daily life artefacts and re-enactments\, a Roman mosaics room run by KCL Classics\, a Roman medical room\, and a variety of other things! \nThere will also be four other discovery zones: Natural History and Science\, Art\, Storytelling\, and Anthropology. Each zone will contain activities\, stalls\, exhibitions\, workshops\, and a wide range of visiting museums with artefacts to handle and explore. There will be shows including animatronic dinosaurs\, birds of prey\, fossils pits\, an opportunity to make your own prints at a vintage printing press\, the Story Museum’s Little Shop of Stories\, artists’ exhibitions\, as well as a cafe serving refreshments and hot and cold drinks. \nVisitors will be able to follow an exciting new model Dragonfly Trail as they explore the site\, with each discovery zone containing striking decorations\, workshops\, stalls\,  performances and activities themed on different aspects of museum learning. \nThe stalls\, activities and exhibitions run from 3.30 until 6pm. It is free and caters for all ages. School groups are warmly welcome. \nThe following talks will also take place throughout the afternoon and evening: \n3.30 – 4pm – Professor Richard Fortey\, Natural Historian and Palaeontologist\n \n4.15 – 4.45pm – Professor Helen King\, ‘Ancient Greek Magic and Medicine’ \n5.15 – 5.45pm – Peter Randall-Page\, Artist and Sculptor\, Royal Academician \n6 – 6.45pm – Will Gompertz\, BBC Chief Arts Correspondent \nThe festival itself does not require booking unless you are visiting with a school group.
