SUMMARY:International CICERO Competition 2022
DESCRIPTION:After a two year hiatus owing to Covid\, the 2022 UK round of the International Cicero Competition will be taking place again this year.  In view of the continuing restrictions and challenges faced by schools\, the competition will now take place online rather than in individual centres\, but as before it will consist of three parts (a team and an individual quiz on a classical civilisation topic) and a Latin translation test.  Schools will be able to complete the three tests in their own time in the week between 26 March and 1 April.  The theme for this year’s competition will be the nature deities\, from the pantheon through to strictly localised gods and goddesses.\n\n \n\nThe entry fee for this year’s competition will be £7.50 for each school.  The entry fee will help to fund prizes for the winning teams.\n\n \n\nFor further details of the competition\, and to enter\, please contact the UK organiser\, Ian Tompkins\, ian.tompkins@ellesmere.com.

DESCRIPTION:Classics Between the Wars with Dr Daisy Dunn\n\n \n\nTuesday 12 April | 18:00 BST\n\n \n\nCoinciding with the publication of her new book\, Not Far From Brideshead: Oxford between the Wars\, Dr Daisy Dunn joins Professor Paul Cartledge to discuss the place of classics in the early twentieth century\, from the performance of new translations of Euripides by Gilbert Murray\, to the subversion of ancient history by the Nazis. What role did the classical past play in contemporary culture between the two world wars? And why did it become part of the national conversation?\n\n \n\nHosted via Zoom Webinar by Professor Paul Cartledge\, this illuminating talk will uncover how classics became a unifying language for Oxford classics scholars like Maurice Bowra\, E. R. Dodds and Gilbert Murray.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nTickets are £10 standard and £5 concession*. Her first books\, Catullus’ Bedspread: The Life of Rome’s Most Erotic Poet and The Poems of Catullus: A New Translation\, were published in 2016. Her dual biography\, In the Shadow of Vesuvius: A Life of Pliny\, was an Editors’ Choice in the New York Times in 2019. Her other books include Of Gods and Men: 100 Stories from Ancient Greece and Rome and the Ladybird Expert book on Homer. She is editor of ARGO: A Hellenic Review.\n\n \n\nProfessor Paul Cartledge:\n\n \n\nPaul Cartledge is A. G. Leventis Senior Research Fellow of Clare College and A. G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture emeritus at Cambridge University. He is an honorary citizen of modern Sparta\, and President of the Hellenic Society (UK).
