SUMMARY:'Euripides’ Medea: barbarian\, witch\, murderer\, goddess' by Prof Edith Hall
DESCRIPTION:LSF Classics Online Summer Lecture by Professor Edith Hall (University of Durham) on Euripides’ Medea \nThu\, 5 May 2022\, 17:30 – 18:30 \nEuripides’ Medea is one of the most fascinating figures in world theatre. This illustrated talk will show how much of her impact stems from the ambiguity about her identity: she is foreign yet speaks elaborate Greek\, adheres to traditional Greek religion yet uses supernatural weapons\, claims to be sane yet commits an enraged murder\, appears to be an all-too-human abandoned wife but disappears on the theatrical machine. We can never be sure exactly who she is. \n

SUMMARY:Representations of Roman Women in Silent Cinema - with UCL Professor of Latin Maria Wyke
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Representations of Roman Women in Silent Cinema – with UCL Professor of Latin Maria Wyke\n\n \n\nDate & Time: 7-7.50pm\, 1st June 2022\n\n \n\nBlurb: From its earliest days\, silent film gave narrative and visual agency to Roman women in its historical reconstructions. Storylines were drawn from modern representations of the Roman past that had already given women larger roles to play than those on offer from the primary sources. Gesture\, words and accompanying music often worked to colour a Roman woman’s story in empathetic terms. This talk will explore some of cinema’s strategies for feminising Roman history and consider some of the reasons why they were developed\, including a desire to draw women into cinemas as spectators.\n\n \n\nTickets: https://www.thelatinprogramme.co.uk/latinprogrammelectures
