SUMMARY:‘The Virtual Reality Oracle’ - Professor Esther Eidinow and Dr Richard Cole (Bristol)
DESCRIPTION:Monday 3rd October\, 7pm – Professor Esther Eidinow and Dr Richard Cole (Bristol) ‘The Virtual Reality Oracle’\n\n \n\nWhat was it like to consult the ancient Greek gods? What questions did people ask? What advice were they given? For centuries\, ancient Greek men and women visited oracular sanctuaries—sacred sites where they could ask the gods to reveal secrets of the past\, present and future. The Virtual Reality Oracle (VRO) brings to life the stories of several pilgrims as they visit the oracle of Zeus at Dodona in northwest Greece circa 465 BCE. Come and hear members of the team behind the VRO discuss how they went about reconstructing the experiences of visitors to Dodona\, and what questions they hope to answer using virtual reality. The VRO is led by Professor Esther Eidinow at the University of Bristol\, in collaboration with academics at University of Bristol\, the University of Bath\, and Kings College London; the VR was created in collaboration with Friday Sundae Studios. The project is funded by the AHRC. Image: a priestess of Zeus from the Virtual Reality Oracle experience.\n\n \n\nFor further news about the Project: CLICK!\n\n \n\nAll talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Talks are not recorded. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 for visitors. Refreshments available from 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:Investigating the Sounds of Ancient Greek Music
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 6 October | 19:00-20:15pm | Royal College of Music\n\n \n\nClassics for All presents an evening of live musical performance\, shining a light on the power and beauty of ancient Greek sounds\, recreated for the modern day.\n\n \n\nIn the 6th century BCE\, the aulos became the leading instrument of Greek culture. Like the piano and organ\, it provided singers and choirs with harmony\, chromaticism\, and loudness beyond anything possible on lyres. Can you imagine the sound? \n\n \n\n \n\nHosted by Classics for All’s Chairman\, Jimmy Mulville\, this splendid evening of ancient Greek music will feature a talk by Professor Armand D’Angour (Jesus College\, Oxford) on the process of bringing ancient Greek music back to life\, and performances by world-leading musicians Stef Conner (voice and lyre)\, Barnaby Brown and Callum Armstrong (aulos).\n\n \n\nThrough a series of musical experiments that push at the boundaries of knowledge\, our talented musicians bring diverse skills and cultural perspectives to the table\, propelling progress where there is puzzlement and disagreement. Their mission: to engage with ancient texts in ways that make them accessible to a wider audience.\n\n \n\nThis is a hybrid event with opportunities to attend either in person or online. \n\n \n\nBook tickets here: https://classicsforall.org.uk/ancientgreekmusic\n\n \n\nTickets to attend in person are £50 and include complementary drinks and canapés.\n\n \n\nTickets to watch online via YouTube Live (and obtain a link to the recording) are £10 with a £5 concessionary rate. Any additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics teaching in state schools is eligible for Gift Aid.\n\n \n\nIf you have any questions about this event\, please email events@classicsforall.org.uk.

SUMMARY:A Moot Trial of Alexander the Great: War Hero or War Criminal?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 26 October | 18:00-19:15pm | Online via YouTube \n\n\n\nIn 330 BCE\, Alexander the Great’s Macedonian Army captured the city of Persepolis and burned it to the ground in a final act of revenge against Persia. \n\n\n\nOver 2\,000 years later\, Alexander stands on trial for war crimes at the UK Supreme Court. He is charged with four counts of violation of the laws and customs of war. Was Alexander as ‘great’ as history has led us to believe? Read the indictment here. \n\n\n\nHis trial will be presided over by Lord Leggatt (Justice of the Supreme Court) with Philippe Sands QC counsel for the prosecution\, and Patrick Gibbs QC counsel for the defence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe prosecution will argue that Alexander was a war criminal\, who committed atrocities at Persepolis as a deliberate political act. The defence will argue that the burning of Persepolis was not politically motivated. War hero or war criminal? The jury will decide. \n\n\n\nWatch the proceedings unfold online and discover the man behind the myth… \n\n\n\nBook tickets: https://classicsforall.org.uk/alexander \n\n\n\nTickets are £10 standard and £5 concession. Any additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics in state schools is most welcome. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this event\, please email events@classicsforall.org.uk. \n\n\n\nMoot trials hosted at the Supreme Court are a tradition of the Classics for All Lawyers Group. Since 2015\, Lawyers Group members have gathered at the court to witness the trials of Boudica\, Socrates\, Brutus\, Antigone\, Verres and Lysistrata. Previous moot trials are on Classics for All’s YouTube channel here.
