SUMMARY:Black Classicism: terms\, methods and key figures
DESCRIPTION:Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association\n\n\n\nThe BMCA is holding two events this half term.\n\n\n\n26-30 September: Black Classicists: from Ostracism to Scholarship\n\n\n\nThis exhibition\, curated by Professor M.V. Ronnick in the US\, shines a light on the work of African-American Classicists who broke down barriers of colour in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They wrote Greek and Latin textbooks\, lectured widely and published extensively.\n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be on display at Solihull School\, Solihull\, B91 3DJ\, and can be viewed can be viewed on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 September 2pm-4pm\, and on Thursday 29 September\, 10am-12pm.\n\n\n\n13 October: Black Classicism: terms\, methods and key figures\n\n\n\nThe BMCA Autumn lecture will tie in with the exhibition. The lecture will be given by Dr Elena Giusti\, Warwick University\, on Thursday 13 October\, 5.30-6.30pm\, and Dr Giusti will be discussing ‘Black Classicism: terms\, methods\, and key figures’. The lecture will also be held at Solihull School.\n\n\n\nThe BMCA would like to take this opportunity to invite you to both the exhibition and the lecture. . SUMMARY:Plato and Us: The Ethics of Community
DESCRIPTION:Prof. MM McCabe \n13 October 2022\, 7pm \nPlato and Us: The Ethics of Community \n\n\n\nEmerita Professor at King’s College London and an Honorary Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge\, Professor MM McCabe is a distinguished scholar and expert on Plato and his philosophy. She is the general editor of the Cambridge University Press series Studies in the Dialogues of Plato and has published widely onAristotle and on the Stoics\, as well as on Plato’s predecessors\, the pre-Socratics and Socrates. A former President of the British Philosophical Association (2008-12) and of The Mind Association (2016-17)\, she is currently the Honorary President of the national Classical Association. Her long-held research interest in philosophy and concepts of punishment led her to become the Founder and a Trustee of Philosophy in Prisons. MM will guide us to learn more about what Plato can teach us about modern living\, the ethics of being in a community\, and why we do what we do.
