SUMMARY:A Moot Trial of Alexander the Great: War Hero or War Criminal?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 26 October | 18:00-19:15pm | Online via YouTube \n\n\n\nIn 330 BCE\, Alexander the Great’s Macedonian Army captured the city of Persepolis and burned it to the ground in a final act of revenge against Persia. \n\n\n\nOver 2\,000 years later\, Alexander stands on trial for war crimes at the UK Supreme Court. He is charged with four counts of violation of the laws and customs of war. Was Alexander as ‘great’ as history has led us to believe? Read the indictment here. \n\n\n\nHis trial will be presided over by Lord Leggatt (Justice of the Supreme Court) with Philippe Sands QC counsel for the prosecution\, and Patrick Gibbs QC counsel for the defence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe prosecution will argue that Alexander was a war criminal\, who committed atrocities at Persepolis as a deliberate political act. The defence will argue that the burning of Persepolis was not politically motivated. War hero or war criminal? The jury will decide. \n\n\n\nWatch the proceedings unfold online and discover the man behind the myth… \n\n\n\nBook tickets: https://classicsforall.org.uk/alexander \n\n\n\nTickets are £10 standard and £5 concession. Any additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics in state schools is most welcome. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this event\, please email events@classicsforall.org.uk. \n\n\n\nMoot trials hosted at the Supreme Court are a tradition of the Classics for All Lawyers Group. Since 2015\, Lawyers Group members have gathered at the court to witness the trials of Boudica\, Socrates\, Brutus\, Antigone\, Verres and Lysistrata. Previous moot trials are on Classics for All’s YouTube channel here.
