SUMMARY:AI in teaching and learning Classics
DESCRIPTION:Fri 23 Oct 2026 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM\nRoom G.19\, Faculty of Classics\, University of Cambridge\, CB3 9DA\n\n \n\nThis is the third in the series of Ancient Languages Teaching Conferences\, and follows last year’s successful conference on Comprehensible Input in Ancient Languages Teaching. Designed for teachers of ancient languages across both universities and schools\, the event aims to deepen our collective understanding of how methods which use Generative AI can be applied in the ancient languages classroom.\n\n \n\nParticipants will discuss diverse pedagogical strategies\, share practical tips for integrating Gen AI into existing schemes of work\, and collaborate on new ways which enhance ancient languages education.\n\n \n\nAs Gen AI increasingly impacts on all our teaching\, this event offers a crucial opportunity to learn how to adapt practices for ancient languages teaching\, promoting more engaging and accessible learning experiences for students of all ages.\n\n \nProvisional Timetable of the Day\n \n\n10.00: Tea/Coffee and Welcome\n\n10:45: Introduction: Steven Hunt (Cambridge)\n\n11:00: Keynote: Imogen Casebourne (DEFI)\n\n11:30: Sam Broadbent (Colchester Royal Grammar School): whole school approach\n\n12:00: Sian Squire (Shrewsbury College)\n\n12:30: Phil Harper (Loughborough Grammar)\n\n1245: Justin Hobson (Cambridge PGCE)\n\n13:00: Lunch (Newnham College)\n\n14:00: Antony Makrinos (UCL)\n\n14:30: Simon Beasley (King Edward VI Five Ways\, Birmingham)\n\n15:00: Eleanor Jenkins (Howells School)\n\n15:20: Virtual Reality Oracle Project: Esther Eidinow and Chris Bevan (Bristol)\n\n16:00: Concluding Remarks\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\nPracticalities\n \nWhere is the event taking place?\n \n\nThe event is taking place at the Faculty of Classics in Cambridge.\n\n \n\nThere is also an option to attend online (please simply select online ticket when booking)\n\n \n\nIf you are coming in-person\, please aim to arrive around 10:00 am to register.\n\n \nGetting Here\n \n\nCambridge is a small city\, which is less than an hour from London and easily accessed by road or train from other parts of the country.\n\n \n\nCambridge County Council travel information\n\n \n\nPlease note there is NO parking available onsite.\n\n \n\nThere is on-street Pay & Display parking on West Road and Sidgwick Avenue. There is also unregulated on-street parking nearby including on Herschel\, Adams and Cranmer Roads\, and we can recommend use of the Madingly Road Park and Ride.\n\n \nCost\n \n\nTickets to attend this event will be free of charge. \n\n \n\nIf you teach in a UK state school and would like to apply for a bursary to help with travel costs you can apply to Classics for All -please complete this form: \n\n \n\nhttps://classicsforall.tfaforms.net/5112783\n\n \n\nOnce CfA have the completed form they will confirm whether or not you have a bursary.\n\n \n\nPlease note you must still register for the event separately  via this Ticket Tailor page\n\n \n\nIf approved\, Classics for All will cover the cost of 2nd class train travel or coach/bus\, (or mileage @ 45p per mile) up to a maximum of £100 per person\, subject to a few conditions:\n\n \n\n 	Recipients must be teaching in the state sector.\n \n 	Recipients should be currently teaching or looking to introduce classics at their school\n \n 	Classics for All will require completion of a short feedback form after the event (separate to any feedback requested by the event organisers)\n \n 	Costs will only be paid for those who attend on the day.\n \n 	All expenses claims must be submitted by Monday 3rd November 2025\n \n 	Expenses will not be paid until after the event.\n\n \n\nExpense forms will be sent nearer the date.\n\n \n\nAny problems\, or questions about the travel bursaries\, please contact: cfaschoolsupport@classicsforall.org.uk  \n\n \n\nWe also kindly ask that you only sign up for an In-person space if you are confident that you can and will attend. \n\n \n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to Cambridge!
