SUMMARY:ELCSS Easter Latin Revision Course 2023
DESCRIPTION:direct preparation for the GCSE examinations in the summer. Candidates will be coming to the end of Year 11 and will be readying themselves for examination. We will be revisiting aspects of the language specification that students generally find difficult\, like the indirect statement\, the ablative absolute\, and the uses of the subjunctive. These set-pieces feature in every GCSE examination paper and it is important that the grammatical knowledge of them is secure. We will look at these constructions in isolation\, and then also disguised in unseen passages of Latin\, where they can be more difficult to identify.\n\n \n\nThe course will run on Monday 3rd & Tuesday 4th April 2023.\n\n \nFURTHER INFORMATION

SUMMARY:Fragments\, a New Play about Euripides and Papyrology\, by @LASwiftClassics
DESCRIPTION:In the backroom of a library archive\, three papyrologists pore over some tattered fragments of papyrus\, 2000 years old. Could they be the remnants of a lost masterpiece by Euripides?  \nThe ancient text tells the story of Aeyptus\, a boy determined to avenge his murdered father and brothers. But how can he succeed when almost all of the script is missing? \nPiecing his story together will take you on a journey around the fragments in your own mind: memories\, assumptions\, things half-heard. \nInspired by the vast collections of ancient papyrus stored in museums around the world\, FRAGMENTS is an irreverent take on an ancient lost play: combining anarchic performance\, lo-fi imagery\, original music… and a whole lot of conjecture. \nThe Playground Theatre\, London: 14 April – 6 May – book tickets here \nThe Old Fire Station\, Oxford: 12 May – 13 May – book tickets here \nExplore the production at www.potentialdifference.org.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a pre-show talk aimed at school students on 26th April\, on the theme of ‘What’s lost from the ancient world and why does it matter?’. It will be suitable for A Level or GCSE students of Latin/Greek/Classical Civilisation. The talk will be held in the theatre venue (The Playground) at 5pm. The talk is free of charge. \n\n\n\nThey can offer school groups a discounted rate for tickets to the show itself: teachers should contact natalie@potentialdifference.org.uk to discuss your needs and she can arrange a code.

SUMMARY:'Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth': a talk by Dr. Andrew Shapland
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 11th May at 7pm\, the Bristol CA will be joined by Dr. Andrew Shapland of the Ashmolean Museum\, who will be delivering a talk on ‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’. As usual\, the talk will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall\, where refreshments will be available from 6:30pm.\n\n \n\nMythical Knossos was the location of the palace of King Minos and the Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. After over a century of excavation at the site\, archaeologists now regard it as the centre of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation\, the home of the earliest farmers in Europe and a thriving Greek and Roman city. This talk will trace the history of exploration of Knossos\, beginning with the early travellers searching for the mythical Labyrinth and ending with more recent discoveries\, which include human sacrifice. It will pay particular attention to the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans\, whose archive at the Ashmolean is the single most important resource for understanding the site of Knossos. The talk will coincide with the Ashmolean’s 2023 ‘Labyrinth’ exhibition.\n\n \n\nPlease sign up via the following Eventbrite link if you are interested in attending this event. Questions can be emailed to Barbara Bell bmbellmini@aol.com\, but all attendees must register via Eventbrite for tickets:https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/609824660977\n\n \n\nTickets are free for Bristol CA members and students\, and £5 for everyone else (payable at the door). You can sign up for multiple tickets under one Eventbrite registration\, but please be accurate in terms of numbers so that we can cater accordingly.\n\n \n\nThank you\, and we hope to see many of you there!

SUMMARY:Greek Tragedy in the Modern World\, a Classics for All Event
DESCRIPTION:From CfA…\n\n \nGreek Tragedy in the Modern World\n \n\nThursday 27 April | 6:00-7:00pm | In person & online\n\n \n\nJoin us for a lively discussion on ancient Greek tragedy and its enduring influence in the modern age. What is it about Greek tragedy that fascinates us? Over 2\,500 years since the birth of tragedy\, the plays of Aeschylus\, Sophocles\, and Euripides continue to hold sway in our cultural imagination. Why are they still performed and what lessons do they have to teach us about life\, loss\, and the human condition?\n\nChaired by Sir Rabinder Singh (Chair of the Lawyers Group)\, this panel discussion with Professor Fiona Macintosh (St Hilda’s College\, Oxford) and Paul O’Mahony (Artistic Director\, Out of Chaos) will delve into the essence of tragedy\, what it has to tell us about law and justice\, and how its power lives on in modern life. \n\n \n\nThis is a hybrid event with opportunities to attend either in person or online.  This event is being hosted at Allen & Overy (One Bishops Square\, London\, E1 6AD). Tickets to attend in person are £20 and include complementary drinks and canapés. SUMMARY:'What did ancient Greek music sound like?'\, a talk by Professor Armand D'Angour
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 10 May\, at 5.30pm\, Professor Armand D’Angour will be giving a free online talk on ancient Greek music as the guest speaker for the Summer Term LSF Classics Lecture.\n\n \n\nABSTRACT: What did ancient Greek music sound like?\n\n \n\nMusic was ubiquitous in ancient Greece\, in celebrations and ceremonies and for drama and entertainment. Surviving ancient Greek poems preserve the lyrics and the rhythms of songs\, which were accompanied by instruments such as the lyre and aulos (double-pipes). The Greeks even devised a notation system in the 5th century BC\, and a few dozen notated scores survive that give us a better understanding of how music sounded 2500 years ago. This talk will describe how recent research has led to new insights about the sounds of ancient music.\n\n \n\nThe talk will be held on Teams. The link will be sent on the day of the talk via email.\n\n \n\nAny queries\, please contact m.rodriguez@lsf.org\n\n \n\nRegistration is open on Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/online-lecture-by-professor-armand-dangour-on-ancient-greek-music-tickets-606625793077

SUMMARY:‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’ - Dr. Andrew Shapland (Ashmolean)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 11th May\, 7pm – Dr. Andrew Shapland (Ashmolean)\n‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’\n\n \n\nMythical Knossos was the location of the palace of King Minos and the Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. The talk will coincide with the Ashmolean’s 2023 Labyrinth exhibition.\n\nFor further details: CLICK!\n\n \n\nAll talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Talks are not recorded. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 for visitors. Refreshments available from 6.30pm.

\n\nThe ancient text tells the story of Aeyptus\, a boy determined to avenge his murdered father and brothers. But how can he succeed when almost all of the script is missing?\n\nPiecing his story together will take you on a journey around the fragments in your own mind: memories\, assumptions\, things half-heard.\n\nInspired by the vast collections of ancient papyrus stored in museums around the world\, FRAGMENTS is an irreverent take on an ancient lost play: combining anarchic performance\, lo-fi imagery\, original music… and a whole lot of conjecture.\n\nThe Playground Theatre\, London: 14 April – 6 May – book tickets here\n\nThe Old Fire Station\, Oxford: 12 May – 13 May – book tickets here\n\nExplore the production at www.potentialdifference.org.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a pre-show talk aimed at school students on 26th April\, on the theme of ‘What’s lost from the ancient world and why does it matter?’. It will be suitable for A Level or GCSE students of Latin/Greek/Classical Civilisation. The talk will be held in the theatre venue (The Playground) at 5pm. The talk is free of charge.\n\n\n\nThey can offer school groups a discounted rate for tickets to the show itself: teachers should contact natalie@potentialdifference.org.uk to discuss your needs and she can arrange a code.

SUMMARY:Populism\, Aristotle and Hope: a talk by Rory Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 8 Jun 2023\, 18:00\n\n \n\nThe Old Library\, Guildhall\n\n \n\nThe period from 1988 to 2003\, was one of extraordinary optimism. Every year the number of democracies increased\, human rights improved\, violent conflict reduced\, there were fewer refugees and there was less global poverty. It was an era of triumph for the western liberal Democratic model for the United States and the politics of the centre ground.\n\n \n\nBut the next 11 years was disrupted by series of humiliating shocks to the west – the fiasco of the Iraq war\, the global financial crisis\, and the emergence of social media all contributed to the loss of faith in the western economic model. This was the period when China having joined the World Trade Organisation grew rapidly larger than the French British German Japanese economies. A period when new democracies ceased to emerge. When the Arab Spring cruelly exposed the false hopes of a Facebook revolution. Public confidence in the future waned.\n\n \n\nThis was the prelude for the new age\, beginning in 2014 – the age of populism. From the election of Narendra Modi in India\, through Brexit\, Trump and Bolsonaro – a new form of politics\, emerged on four continents – pitching an imagined “people“ against an “elite“ exploiting the new potential of social media and growing resentment\, to inflame polarisation. Politics became even more vicious and divisive. The pragmatic centre ground disappeared.\n\n \n\nAcross the world\, the number of democracies began to shrink\, violent conflict increased\, refugees increased so did civilian deaths in conflict. And in 2022\, the Russian invasion of Ukraine brought a new authoritarian inflection to the age of populism. China\, whose economy in 2005 was still smaller than that of the United Kingdom now had an economy seven times larger. The rise of UAE and Saudi reinforced the prestige of authoritarian economic powers. Western failures to respond to the crisis in Syria and Crimea undermined their credibility. The United States and Europe struggling both to come to terms of their own colonial histories and divisions within their own country\, lurched into isolation. International development aid reduced. Poverty in Africa continued to explode.\n\n \n\nMany of the fundamental structures which drove the stagnation\, polarisation and collapse remain today. Nevertheless\, there is a maturity and reality to the centre ground which should still be a source of inspiration.\n\n \n\nReenergising the centre requires rediscovering the fundamental principles of Aristotle‘s theory of language. The combination of logos\, Athos\, and ethos. Hope\, reality\, and truth can\, and should suggest a better future for the democratic politics and the global order.

SUMMARY:‘Towards a more Inclusive Classics III – Material Culture’\, 28-30 June 2023
DESCRIPTION:An Inclusive Classics Initiative hybrid workshop organised by Dr Alexia Petsalis-Diomidis (University of St Andrews) and Dr Tulsi Parikh (British School at Athens)\, hosted by the Institute of Classical Studies and supported by CUCD EDI Committee.\n\n \n\nThe third ‘Towards a more Inclusive Classics’ workshop is focused on the theme of Material Culture. It addresses the issue of barriers to accessing classical material culture and explores approaches that foreground marginalised perspectives. It offers a forum for integrated discussions between those working at different stages and in different sectors related to classical material culture. Speakers will include students\, academics\, schoolteachers\, archaeologists\, and those working in museums and in outreach. The format of the workshop is hybrid\, consisting of two online half days and one in-person day (29 June) in the ICS / British Museum. Online presentations will be in the form of pre-submitted materials (e.g. a short written paper\, recorded talk\, PowerPoint\, handout) followed by live short talks (c.10 mins) and discussion. These will take place on 28 and 30 June; abstracts of c.150 words are invited for the following panels:\n\n \n\n(1) The ‘INCLUSIVE EXCAVATION PRACTICES’ panel is devoted to the ways in which we can build more diverse and inclusive archaeological practices\, beginning with the work done in the field. Suggested topics include antiracist archaeology\, disability in archaeology\, and collaboration with the public.\n\n \n\n(2) The ‘DECOLONISING THE MUSEUM’ panel combines discussion of decolonising the museum with personal experiences in museums\, foregrounding marginalised voices. A discussion on repatriation will be included here.\n\n \n\n(3) The ‘QUEERING ARCHAEOLOGY’ panel challenges heteronormative and cisnormative ways of studying the past and experiencing material culture.\n\n \n\n(4) The ‘PUBLIC ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY’ panel considers how we can use classical objects in innovative ways to bring together different\, often marginalised\, parts of the community\, cutting across different sectors.\n\n \n\n(5) We are also seeking expressions of interest from teachers for participation in a roundtable on ‘CLASSICAL MATERIAL CULTURE TEACHING IN SCHOOLS’.\n\n \n\nPlease send abstracts and expressions of interest for the roundtable to Tulsi and Alexia\n\n \n\n(inclusiveclassics@gmail.com) by 20 January 2023. We aim to respond by 28 February. We particularly welcome abstracts from early career scholars\, and those currently underrepresented in the field\, including Black\, Asian and those from other minority ethnic communities\, LGBTQ+\, neurodiverse and academics with disabilities. If you would like to be added to the Inclusive Classics email list do get in touch. We hope to advertise student bursaries towards attending the in-person event nearer the time.
