DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open!\n \n\nThe 103rd ARLT Summer School will take place at Giggleswick School from Monday 27th July – Thursday 30th July\, directed by Jessica Dixon and Joanna Johnson.\n\n \n\n \n\nINSET FOR CLASSICS TEACHERS\n\n \nWhat is the ARLT Summer School for Classics teachers?\n \n\nThe ARLT Summer School for Classics teachers is a residential CPD course and networking event that brings together teachers at all stages of their careers. Every year\, practising teachers\, PGCE students\, prospective teachers\, and experienced retired teachers meet to celebrate their love for Latin\, Greek\, and all things Classics.\n\n \nWhere will the 2026 Summer School take place?\n \n\nGiggleswick School is a boarding and day school set on the border of the glorious Yorkshire Dales. The school is a 5 minute drive or 25 minute walk from Settle train station and for those driving it is just off the A65.\n\n \n\nAccommodation is available for residential guests in single rooms with shared bathroom facilities. There will also be the opportunity to use the tennis courts.\n\n \n\nWhat does the programme include?\n\n \n\n 	Lectures\n \n 	Practical workshops: language tuition\, spoken Latin\, set texts\, Roman crafts\, teaching and learning training\, and more\n \n 	Networking opportunities\, including entertainment and an optional Latin-speaking table during meals.\n\n \n\nIs it only for Latin\, or is it suitable for those focusing on Classical Civilisation and Ancient History?\n\n \n\nYou do not need to know or be teaching Latin and Greek to get the most out of the summer school. There are plenty of option groups focused on Classical Civilisation and pedagogy.\n\n \nThe venue:\n \n\nGiggleswick School\n\n \nSpeakers to include:\n \n\n\n\n\nDr Bev Back\nLeeds\n‘Not Like Us’: Teaching Catullan invective through Kendrick Lamar and Drake.\n\n\nProf Hugh Bowden\nKCL\nAlexander the Great (title TBC)\n\n\nDr John Holton\nNewcastle\nBuilding a Ptolemaic Royal State in Egypt and Beyond\n\n\nBronwen Riley\nAuthor\nLife on Hadrian’s Wall (title TBC)\n\n\nGráinne Cassidy\nCA\nGCSE Qualification Reform (Latin\, Greek and Classical Civilisation)\n\n\n\n\n \nOPTION GROUPS\n \n\nOption groups are workshop-style sessions delivered by teachers for teachers. There is a choice of language\, literature\, Classical Civilisation and History options.\n\n \n\nThe cost\n\n \n\n 	should be met from your school’s INSET budget\n \n 	is reduced for PGCE students\n \n 	is reduced for those attending for the first time\n \n 	includes membership of the ARLT until 31st December 2029\n\n \n\nNB  Other bursaries are available on application to our treasurer\, Jessica Dixon at treasurer@arlt.co.uk – please see note below*\n\n \n\nThe price per person for residents includes tuition\, full board and accommodation.\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFull price\n£240\n\n\nPGCE student\n£120\n\n\nFirst-time attendee\n£140\n\n\nOG leaders\n£140\n\n\nBursary\n£140\n\n\nOG leader + bursary\n£90\n\n\nNon-residential\n£175\n\n\nDaily rate\n£55\n\n\n\n\n \n\n* Classics for All will cover the cost of 2nd class train travel for one teacher per school\, (or mileage @ 45p per mile) up to a maximum of £100 per person\, subject to a few conditions: \n\n \n\n 	Recipients must be teaching in the state sector. \n \n 	Recipients should be currently teaching or looking to introduce a Classical subject to their schools either on timetable or as a club/elective. \n \n 	Classics for All will require completion of a short feedback form after the event (separate to any feedback requested by conference organisers) \n \n 	Costs will only be paid for those who attend on the day. \n \n 	All expenses claims must be submitted by 10 days after the event \n \n 	Expenses will not be paid until after the event. \n\n \n\nApplications should be made through: Classics for All CPD travel bursary request – 2026  – Fill in form\n\n \n\nPlease fill in the registration form below by July 4th to save your space with a £50 deposit.\n\n \n\nNB: All payments are only fully refundable up to June 30th\, 2026. Once registered\, you will receive details to complete payment\, which is due in full by 28th June. This should be paid directly to the ARLT bank account.\n\n \n\nARLT is very grateful for the ongoing financial support from the Classical Association\, which generously funds our bursaries for our Summer School.
