SUMMARY:The Odyssey in a Postcolonial World with Dr Justine McConnell
DESCRIPTION:The Odyssey in a Postcolonial World with Dr Justine McConnell\nMonday 13 June | 18:00 BST\nvia YouTube Live\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWhat would happen to Odysseus if he found himself in our modern world? And what has the discipline of Classics to do with colonialism?\n\nBy considering works by three key twentieth-century writers\, we’ll explore their varied responses to these questions and ask what heroism looks like in the twenty-first century. From Derek Walcott’s epic poem Omeros\, set in the St Lucian fishing village of Gros Islet\, to Toni Morrison’s tale of a female questing hero in Sula\, and Ralph Ellison’s pre-Civil Rights era novel Invisible Man\, we find three very different responses to Homer’s epic\, each recasting the ancient Greek myths as tales that reflect on the African diaspora.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nTickets (£10 standard and £5 concession*) are available via the link below. You may also choose to give an additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics teaching in state schools.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n*Concessionary tickets are available to anyone who is a pensioner\, unemployed or still in full-time education.\n\nFree tickets are available to state school teachers\, pupils and regional network personnel working with Classics for All’s programme. If you are in one of these groups\, please email events@classicsforall.org.uk to apply.

SUMMARY:KCL Greek Play: The Myth of Oedipus
DESCRIPTION:From the folks at KCL… \nKCL Greek Play 2022  \nWe are excited to announce that the King’s Greek Play 2022 (22-24 June\, 2022) will be a brand new response to Sophocles’ Theban cycle\, created by current KCL students. The performance will incorporate original ancient Greek text and new writing in order to present a work that speaks to the social and political consequences of an unprecedented pandemic\, civil disobedience\, and the place and responsibility of an individual within society. Telling the mythical story of Oedipus from the perspective of his courageous daughter Antigone\, this year’s Greek Play will examine how our history can shape our actions and beliefs\, as well as reflecting upon the unexpected ways in which the present moment might shape the lives of future generations. This performance will continue KCL’s recent history of pushing the boundaries and conventions of ‘the Greek Play’ to explore how contemporary performance of Greek drama can help us engage with the fraught times in which we find ourselves living. \nThis year’s play will again be ideal for those studying Classical Civilisation – Oedipus the King is a prescribed text for the OCR A level syllabus – as well as students taking Classics\, Drama\, and English. \nThe play will be performed at the Greenwood Theatre\, London Bridge (SE1 3RA) from 22-24 June 2022 (19.00 nightly with 14.30 matinées on the 22 and 24). Evening performances will be preceded by pre-show events at 18.00 featuring leading scholars; these are free to ticket holders for the subsequent performance. Bookings for schools will open at the end of February. Look out for another update from us then!

SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Ancient Philosophy 2022
DESCRIPTION:University College London (Some courses are available in an online format) \n\n\n\nMonday 11 July to Friday 15 July 2022\n\n\n\nWhat are the origins of the world? How can we achieve happiness? What is the best form of government? Is democracy good? These are only some of the questions which ancient philosophers tried to answer more than 2\,500 years ago. Their bold and unprecedented enterprise prompted an intellectual revolution\, the relevance of which has not since faded. The Summer School in Ancient Philosophy aims to follow the steps of the ancient philosophers in their enquiries on the world and human life\, and explore their continuing importance today. \n\n\n\nThe Summer School offers a five-day programme covering the major themes and thinkers of Ancient Philosophy. There will be four classes each day\, between 10:30 am. and 3.30pm. Courses will be held in person unless otherwise specified. \n\n\n\nFor further information and to book\, click here!

SUMMARY:LATIN CAMP 2022 (Mon 18th to Sat 30th July)
DESCRIPTION:Re. LATIN CAMP 2022 (Mon 18th to Sat 30th July)\, from David Stephenson…\n\n \n\nDear Colleagues\,\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2022 dates are Monday 18th July to Saturday 30th July\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College after a hugely successful first Camp there in 2021. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally. The usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join the beginners’ group.\n\n \n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.)\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nWe were delighted with the success of the remote Latin Camp in 2020 – students and staff alike made the very best of it – but it was not a patch on the live version we were delighted to deliver once again in 2021. The classes\, grammar clinics and talks can be effectively replicated remotely but that’s about it – so much learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in small groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. It’s about discovering\, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists\, making contacts and friends for life.\n\n \n\nPlease do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions or indeed suggestions – I would love to hear from you.\n\n \n\nYours sincerely\,\n\n \n\nDavid Stephenson\nJACT Latin Summer School

SUMMARY:STUDYING THE CLASSICAL WORLD: Classical Views on Modern Issues
DESCRIPTION:From the RH Dept…\n\n \n\nJoin the Classics department for a day of Studying the Classical World at Royal Holloway\, University of London.\n\n \n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/studying-the-classical-world-classical-views-on-modern-issues-tickets-359464075727?fbclid=IwAR3B1Mps08rKv8-YxX_xtXMS0ucyspNVmgohN3dIRm0bFQ7gYNhQtCXNZAA&fs=e&s=cl\n\n \nAbout this event\n \n\nTuesday 19th July 2022\, 10.30 a.m. – 3.15 p.m.\n\n \n\nMoore Annexe Lecture Theatre\n\n \n\nRoyal Holloway\, Egham\, Surrey TW20 0EX\n\n \n\n10.30 a.m.\n\n \n\nRegistration and welcome\n\n \n\n10.35-11.05 a.m.\n\n \n\nHow Homer Predicted All This\n\n \n\nDr. Nick Lowe\, Reader in Classics\n\n \n\nCan the oldest books in the western world make sense of what just happened? How is it that the Iliad and Odyssey not only anticipated the key issues facing the world of 2022\, but proposed analyses from which we can still learn and solutions which remain actionable? Why do texts we’ve been reading since the very invention of the alphabet keep turning out to be about new things? – things that they were about all along\, but which we never noticed until we lived through something like them? For the case of the Homeric epics\, there’s an actual answer\, which goes to the heart of what Classics is and does.\n\n \n\n11.05-11.35 am.\n\n \n\nToxic masculinity in Ovid’s Metamorphoses\n\n \n\nDr. Efi Spentzou\, Reader in Latin Language & Literature\n\n \n\nWhat makes a good hero? Greek myth offers colourful stories of strong and invincible warriors and larger than life characters\, but the Roman poet Ovid in his quirky epic\, the Metamorphoses\, gets into the mind of these epic heroes to dig out their desires\, ambitions\, but also fears and insecurities\, as men as well as soldiers. This session explores some striking examples of toxic masculinity\, as the men struggle with their thoughts as much as (if not more than) with the opponents facing them in battle.\n\n \n\n11.35-12 noon Refreshments\n\n \n\n12.00-12.30\n\n \n\nConquest and Atrocity: Land and Blood in Roman Germany\n\n \n\nProfessor Richard Alston\, Professor of Roman History\n\n \n\nIn 14 CE after putting down a mutiny of his own troops\, Germanicus Caesar\, presumed heir of the Emperor Tiberius\, led his armies across the Rhine into Germany. What followed was by all modern standards a war crime. Yet\, it passes almost without comment in our ancient writers. This presentation asks the fundamental question of why states sponsor massacres. In so doing\, we will examine the relationship between territory\, nation and trauma and how the differences between antiquity and the present help us understand better some of the fundamental moral and political questions of our time.\n\n \n\n12.30-2.00 p.m. Lunch Break\n\n \n\nYou can bring a packed lunch\, or purchase sandwiches and drinks from a variety of venues across the campus. Student ambassadors will be on hand to show you around our impressive campus.\n\n \n\n1.00-2.00 p.m. Mini Campus Tour with Student Ambassadors (optional)\n\n \n\n2.00-2.30 p.m.\n\n \n\nA Woman’s Place: Creating Space and Gender in Plautus\n\n \n\nDr. Liz Gloyn\, Reader in Latin Language & Literature\n\n \n\nWe take the space and place for granted\, but it often influences and shapes us in unexpected ways. Dr. Gloyn examines the plays of the Roman comic dramatist Plautus to explore how he uses spaces occupied only by women\, and asks what fresh interpretations of the texts open up if we ask what happens when women take centre stage.\n\n \n\n2.30-3.15 p.m.\n\n \n\nStudying the classical world at University & its Career Opportunities: a Q&A session\n\n \n\nDr. Richard Hawley\, Senior Lecturer in Classics\n\n \n\nThis session will explain how studying classical culture at university level differs from studying at school/college. It will also explore the wealth of career opportunities for those with classical culture degrees and give all those present an opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Hawley and the student ambassadors\, for example about application procedures\, degree course content\, and student experience.\n\n \n\nThe Moore Annexe Lecture Theatre is in the middle of the campus\, on the Campus Plan\, downloadable from http://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/aboutus/locationmap/home.aspx

SUMMARY:Latin Summer School at St Albans Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:Explore the texts and language of one of Christianity’s most influential theologians\, St Augustine of Hippo\, in this week-long Summer School.\n\n \n\nSuitable for students who are working at post-beginner level or above\, or those who have studied Latin in the past\, this week of Latin will explore the language\, grammar and text of Augustine’s Confessions (Book 1).\n\n \n\nA wayward young man\, pained by a deep conviction of his own sin\, sat in a garden in fourth-century Milan. The small voice of a child drifted across saying\, “tolle\, lege; tolle\, lege”\, “pick up\, read; pick up\, read”. The young man turned and picked up a book that had been left behind by his friend with whom he had just been talking. It was a copy of the Letter to the Romans. He opened the book and looked down : Let us walk properly as in the daytime\, not in orgies and drunkenness\, not in sexual immorality and sensuality\, not in quarrelling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ\, and make no provision for the flesh\, to gratify its desires (Romans 13:13-14).\n\n \n\nSo marked the point of conversion of the young man to Christianity. He would later become St Augustine of Hippo (354-430)\, a bishop in North Africa and one of the most influential theologians in the West. The account of his conversion is part of his autobiographical and most well-known work\, the Confessions.\n\nJoshua Calvin Shaw’s edition\, available to buy here and to download as a PDF for free here\, will be the text used. Shaw’s edition contains full vocabulary lists and reading aids.\n\n \n\nWhen | Monday 1 – Friday 5 August\,  10.30am-3.30pm\n\n \n\nWhere | Alban Room\, St Albans Cathedral\n\n \n\nCost | £150\n\n \n\nTutor | Anthony Armstrong\, Tutor in Latin and Greek\n\n \nFURTHER INFORMATION

Furthermore\, students gain first-hand experience of objects and monuments not accessible to the general public.\n\n \n\nHighlights include:\n\n \n\n A visit to the interior of the Parthenon and to the temple of Apollo at Bassai\n Extended lectures at the pan-Hellenic sanctuaries of Delphi and Olympia\n Classes at the stadium of Nemea and at the theatre of Epidauros\n The Bronze Age sites of Mycenae\, Tiryns and Pylos\n An introduction to Byzantine\, Venetian\, and Ottoman archaeology\n Introductions to key archaeological and museological skills (including a masterclass on archaeological science from the Fitch Laboratory at the BSA)\n Lectures at 45 archaeological sites and museums\n\n \n\nThis course may be taken as a credit module at many UK universities. Mature students and life-long learners are also very welcome to apply.\n\n \n\nAll students will have access to the outstanding research facilities of the BSA\, and will be introduced to the archaeological\, archival\, and scientific work of the BSA. Course participants will be accommodated half-board at the BSA hostel\, and in hotels when on excursions.\n\n \n\nThe course fee will not exceed €700\, inclusive of accommodation\, entrance charges to sites and museums\, transport within Greece\, half-board\, and associate membership of the BSA for one month. Furthermore\, the BSA is delighted to administer a number of bursaries of up to €400 (in certain circumstances\, larger awards may be made). Travel to and from Greece is the responsibility of the course participants. In 2021\, we were delighted to administer through the A.G. Leventis Foundation two scholarships that covered all course fees and travel costs for two students who would not otherwise have been able to attend the course.\n\n \n\nA provisional course itinerary\, further information\, and a link to the application portal can be found on the BSA website.  Completed applications should arrive no later than Friday 1st April 2022. Please be aware that a reference request will be sent automatically to the nominated referee only upon submitting the application form\, so students should aim to submit their application in good time ahead of the deadline.\n\n \n\nWe are happy to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate a range of health and medical needs\, to the extent possible given the size of our staffing and the nature of the course. Please write to the Assistant Director at any stage pre- or post-application to discuss possible adjustments.\n\n \nVenue address\n52 Souedias Street\nAthens\nGR10676\nGreece

SUMMARY:‘Alexander The Great Is Dead!’ — What Happened Next?
DESCRIPTION:Tristan Hughes \n29 September 2022\, 7pm \nAlexander the Great is Dead! What Happened Next? \n\n\n\nCalling all lovers of ancient history! Tristan Hughes\, producer and present at History Hit\, and host of The Ancients podcast opens our season with a talk that will take us a back to 10/11 June 323 BCE\, when King Alexander III of Macedon\, better known as Alexander ‘the Great’\, died in Babylon aged 32. In his lifetime\, he had forged one of the largest empires the world had yet seen\, theoretically stretching from Greece to the Punjab\, from Egypt to Samarkand. What followed his death\, however\, was an imperial implosion. As soon as Alexander died\, the thin thread holding much of his empire together disintegrated. Tristan Hughes will tell the story of the crisis that ensued after his demise. We do hope you can join us then.
