DESCRIPTION:Dates & Times: Sunday 17 – Sunday 31 July 2022\n\n \n\n​Location: Florence\, Italy\n\n \n\n​\n\n \n\nOverview\n\n \n\nJoin us for two weeks under the Tuscan sun to explore women’s writing in Latin on this unique learning experience that brings language to life in the real spaces where women learnt and wrote Latin. With a strong focus on primary sources from classical antiquity up to the early modern period\, you will have the chance to hone your Latin reading skills\, discover new authors and discuss a range of themes on a journey through 1\,500 years of writing. Our salon-style mornings will be complemented by a range of afternoon activities including special site visits and creative writing on the Arno.\n\n \n\n​Who is this course suitable for?\n\n \n\nAnyone with an intermediate-advanced background in Latin\, looking for more practice reading authentic texts. No experience with post-classical Latin required. LATIN CAMP 2022 (Mon 18th to Sat 30th July)\, from David Stephenson…\n\n \n\nDear Colleagues\,\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2022 dates are Monday 18th July to Saturday 30th July\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College after a hugely successful first Camp there in 2021. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally. The usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join the beginners’ group.\n\n \n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.)\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nWe were delighted with the success of the remote Latin Camp in 2020 – students and staff alike made the very best of it – but it was not a patch on the live version we were delighted to deliver once again in 2021. The classes\, grammar clinics and talks can be effectively replicated remotely but that’s about it – so much learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in small groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. How is it that the Iliad and Odyssey not only anticipated the key issues facing the world of 2022\, but proposed analyses from which we can still learn and solutions which remain actionable? Why do texts we’ve been reading since the very invention of the alphabet keep turning out to be about new things? – things that they were about all along\, but which we never noticed until we lived through something like them? For the case of the Homeric epics\, there’s an actual answer\, which goes to the heart of what Classics is and does.\n\n \n\n11.05-11.35 am.\n\n \n\nToxic masculinity in Ovid’s Metamorphoses\n\n \n\nDr. Efi Spentzou\, Reader in Latin Language & Literature\n\n \n\nWhat makes a good hero? Greek myth offers colourful stories of strong and invincible warriors and larger than life characters\, but the Roman poet Ovid in his quirky epic\, the Metamorphoses\, gets into the mind of these epic heroes to dig out their desires\, ambitions\, but also fears and insecurities\, as men as well as soldiers. This session explores some striking examples of toxic masculinity\, as the men struggle with their thoughts as much as (if not more than) with the opponents facing them in battle.\n\n \n\n11.35-12 noon Refreshments\n\n \n\n12.00-12.30\n\n \n\nConquest and Atrocity: Land and Blood in Roman Germany\n\n \n\nProfessor Richard Alston\, Professor of Roman History\n\n \n\nIn 14 CE after putting down a mutiny of his own troops\, Germanicus Caesar\, presumed heir of the Emperor Tiberius\, led his armies across the Rhine into Germany. What followed was by all modern standards a war crime. Yet\, it passes almost without comment in our ancient writers. This presentation asks the fundamental question of why states sponsor massacres. DESCRIPTION:Explore the texts and language of one of Christianity’s most influential theologians\, St Augustine of Hippo\, in this week-long Summer School.\n\n \n\nSuitable for students who are working at post-beginner level or above\, or those who have studied Latin in the past\, this week of Latin will explore the language\, grammar and text of Augustine’s Confessions (Book 1).\n\n \n\nA wayward young man\, pained by a deep conviction of his own sin\, sat in a garden in fourth-century Milan. The small voice of a child drifted across saying\, “tolle\, lege; tolle\, lege”\, “pick up\, read; pick up\, read”. The young man turned and picked up a book that had been left behind by his friend with whom he had just been talking. It was a copy of the Letter to the Romans. He opened the book and looked down : Let us walk properly as in the daytime\, not in orgies and drunkenness\, not in sexual immorality and sensuality\, not in quarrelling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ\, and make no provision for the flesh\, to gratify its desires (Romans 13:13-14).\n\n \n\nSo marked the point of conversion of the young man to Christianity. He would later become St Augustine of Hippo (354-430)\, a bishop in North Africa and one of the most influential theologians in the West. The account of his conversion is part of his autobiographical and most well-known work\, the Confessions.\n\nJoshua Calvin Shaw’s edition\, available to buy here and to download as a PDF for free here\, will be the text used. Students are taught to recognise and interpret material remains\, and to think critically about how the archaeology of Greece can be understood alongside other types of evidence (e.g. literature and history). This three-week intensive course covers Prehistoric\, Archaic\, Classical\, Roman\, Byzantine\, and Venetian Greece\, and is taught through thematic lectures and site tours by leading experts. Furthermore\, students gain first-hand experience of objects and monuments not accessible to the general public.\n\n \n\nHighlights include:\n\n \n\n 	A visit to the interior of the Parthenon and to the temple of Apollo at Bassai\n 	Extended lectures at the pan-Hellenic sanctuaries of Delphi and Olympia\n 	Classes at the stadium of Nemea and at the theatre of Epidauros\n 	The Bronze Age sites of Mycenae\, Tiryns and Pylos\n 	An introduction to Byzantine\, Venetian\, and Ottoman archaeology\n 	Introductions to key archaeological and museological skills (including a masterclass on archaeological science from the Fitch Laboratory at the BSA)\n 	Lectures at 45 archaeological sites and museums\n\n \n\nThis course may be taken as a credit module at many UK universities. Ronnick in the US\, shines a light on the work of African-American Classicists who broke down barriers of colour in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They wrote Greek and Latin textbooks\, lectured widely and published extensively.\n\n \n\nThe exhibition will be on display at Solihull School\, Solihull\, B91 3DJ\, and can be viewed can be viewed on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 September 2pm-4pm\, and on Thursday 29 September\, 10am-12pm.\n\n \n\n13 October: Black Classicism: terms\, methods and key figures\n\n \n\nThe BMCA Autumn lecture will tie in with the exhibition. The lecture will be given by Dr Elena Giusti\, Warwick University\, on Thursday 13 October\, 5.30-6.30pm\, and Dr Giusti will be discussing ‘Black Classicism: terms\, methods\, and key figures’. In his lifetime\, he had forged one of the largest empires the world had yet seen\, theoretically stretching from Greece to the Punjab\, from Egypt to Samarkand. What followed his death\, however\, was an imperial implosion. As soon as Alexander died\, the thin thread holding much of his empire together disintegrated. Tristan Hughes will tell the story of the crisis that ensued after his demise. We do hope you can join us then.

DESCRIPTION:Monday 3rd October\, 7pm – Professor Esther Eidinow and Dr Richard Cole (Bristol) ‘The Virtual Reality Oracle’\n\n \n\nWhat was it like to consult the ancient Greek gods? What questions did people ask? What advice were they given? For centuries\, ancient Greek men and women visited oracular sanctuaries—sacred sites where they could ask the gods to reveal secrets of the past\, present and future. The Virtual Reality Oracle (VRO) brings to life the stories of several pilgrims as they visit the oracle of Zeus at Dodona in northwest Greece circa 465 BCE. Come and hear members of the team behind the VRO discuss how they went about reconstructing the experiences of visitors to Dodona\, and what questions they hope to answer using virtual reality. The VRO is led by Professor Esther Eidinow at the University of Bristol\, in collaboration with academics at University of Bristol\, the University of Bath\, and Kings College London; the VR was created in collaboration with Friday Sundae Studios. The project is funded by the AHRC. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 6 October | 19:00-20:15pm | Royal College of Music\n\n \n\nClassics for All presents an evening of live musical performance\, shining a light on the power and beauty of ancient Greek sounds\, recreated for the modern day.\n\n \n\nIn the 6th century BCE\, the aulos became the leading instrument of Greek culture. Like the piano and organ\, it provided singers and choirs with harmony\, chromaticism\, and loudness beyond anything possible on lyres. Can you imagine the sound? \n\n \n\n \n\nHosted by Classics for All’s Chairman\, Jimmy Mulville\, this splendid evening of ancient Greek music will feature a talk by Professor Armand D’Angour (Jesus College\, Oxford) on the process of bringing ancient Greek music back to life\, and performances by world-leading musicians Stef Conner (voice and lyre)\, Barnaby Brown and Callum Armstrong (aulos).\n\n \n\nThrough a series of musical experiments that push at the boundaries of knowledge\, our talented musicians bring diverse skills and cultural perspectives to the table\, propelling progress where there is puzzlement and disagreement. You’re welcome too if you’re not new to Latin\, but no previous knowledge is needed. Come and have some fun\, and make new discoveries! You’ll have an introduction to how the language works\, and discover all sorts of things about English too\, with so many Latin words at the root of English ones. DESCRIPTION:Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association\n\n\n\nThe BMCA is holding two events this half term.\n\n\n\n26-30 September: Black Classicists: from Ostracism to Scholarship\n\n\n\nThis exhibition\, curated by Professor M.V. Ronnick in the US\, shines a light on the work of African-American Classicists who broke down barriers of colour in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They wrote Greek and Latin textbooks\, lectured widely and published extensively.\n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be on display at Solihull School\, Solihull\, B91 3DJ\, and can be viewed can be viewed on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 September 2pm-4pm\, and on Thursday 29 September\, 10am-12pm.\n\n\n\n13 October: Black Classicism: terms\, methods and key figures\n\n\n\nThe BMCA Autumn lecture will tie in with the exhibition. The lecture will be given by Dr Elena Giusti\, Warwick University\, on Thursday 13 October\, 5.30-6.30pm\, and Dr Giusti will be discussing ‘Black Classicism: terms\, methods\, and key figures’. The lecture will also be held at Solihull School.\n\n\n\nThe BMCA would like to take this opportunity to invite you to both the exhibition and the lecture. .
