During each session an author and a Latin text will be introduced and a passage from the latter distributed as ‘homework’ for the attendees to translate before the next session. SUMMARY:Theatre and Politics in Classical Athens
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Liverpool Classical Association Programme 2022-23 collection\n\n \n\nThe lecture will look at the complementary relationship between tragedy and comedy in their engagement with contemporary Athenian politics.\n\n \n\nThu\, 23 February 2023\, 19:00 – 20:00 GMT\n\n \n\nLiverpool College Queens Drive Liverpool L18 8BG\n\n \n\n \n\nThe world of the Athenian tragic stage and the world of its audience present a striking contrast. The plays were performed at festivals sponsored and managed by the democracy. Yet the plays themselves (probably almost 1800 plays performed over the lifetime of the democracy) were almost invariably set in a remote world ruled by kings\, the world familiar from Homeric epic. At the same time\, the political experience and values of democratic Athens impact on the content of the plays in different\, sometimes disconcerting\, ways. The lecture will look at the complex and shifting relationship between tragedy and Athenian democracy and modern attempts to explain that relationship. Comedy engages more directly with contemporary politics; but even here the relationship between the world inside the theatre and the world outside proves slippery. The lecture will also look at the complementary relationship between tragedy and comedy in their engagement with contemporary Athenian political life.\n\n \n\nProfessor Chris Carey is Emeritus Professor of Greek at University College London. His research interests include Greek lyric poetry\, tragedy and comedy\, oratory\, rhetoric and law. He has published widely on Greek literature. He is a fellow of the British Academy. Fictional retellings of Homer’s women have been flooding onto the market in recent years: Madeline Miller’s Circe (2018)\, Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls (2018) and The Women of Troy (2021)\, Natalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships (2019)\, as well as my own For the Most Beautiful (2016). But at the same time as all this\, modern research has been proceeding apace and historians like me have been making discoveries about the real world these women lived in: filling the gaps\, not only with the world of imagination\, but with the real\, lived experience of these incredible women. This talk explores the non-fiction reality (as far as we know it) behind the Homeric women that have hit the mainstream in recent years\, and caught the interest of so many readers. It explores each of Homer’s women in turn\, from Helen to Calypso\, Circe to Penelope\, delving into original ancient Greek texts\, re-reading ancient histories\, and unravelling new archaeological evidence in search of the real women in Homer.

SUMMARY:‘A Day to Celebrate Classics’ at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School
DESCRIPTION:Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School would like to invite you and your Classics pupils to an event we are organising on Wednesday 8th March 2023.\n\n \n\nTo celebrate Classics and all its benefits\, we are hosting ‘A Day to Celebrate Classics’ to coincide with our pupils making their GCSE choices and Year 12 pupils considering their university course options.\n\n \n\n \n\nWe have organised a day of exciting talks from a range of university lecturers and authors finishing with a panel of over ten Classics graduates\, chaired by Jimmy Mulville\, answering questions on their experience of Classics at university and the very different things they have done with their Classics degree. The aim of the day is to celebrate a subject that has enriched so many lives and hopefully to encourage more pupils to choose it as an option at A Level and beyond. So far\, confirmed speakers include: Natalie Haynes\, Edith Hall\, Carrie Vout\, Llewelyn Morgan\, Emily Kneebone and Giuseppe Pezzini.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nWhere? Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School\, W14 8BZ. Nearest tubes are Shepherd’s Bush or Holland Park.\n\n \n\nWho can I bring? Currently\, spaces will be limited to 10 pupils per school\, but please state on the form if you wish to bring more and I will try and accommodate your request. Places will be awarded on a first come first served basis.\n\n \n\nWhich age group is this day aimed at? Primarily Year 12 pupils\, but if you have keen bean Year 11s\, then they are most welcome.\n\n \n\nWhat are the timings? We start at 8:45am but you’re welcome to arrive with pupils from 8:00am. The day will finish at 4:30pm.\n\n \n\nWill there be food? We are happy to provide refreshments and lunch for staff\, but pupils will have break times to go to Westfield or Holland Park.\n\n \n\nWhat does it cost? This event is free!\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nIf you would like to attend with a group of pupils then please complete this form no later than Friday  10th February at 9am. https://forms.office.com/e/VDY5CEj3Pj\n\n \n\nI will be in touch after Half Term to confirm places\, and supply an itinerary for the day and a register request for pupils attending.\n\n \n\nAny questions\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch: daviel@cvms.co.uk

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 8th March\, 7pm – Dr Rosie Wyles (Kent) ‘Tragedy’s Props’\n\n \n\nThis talk explores the impact of props on the tragic stage. It considers how playwrights loaded these objects with meaning within their productions to create dramatic effects. Moreover\, the symbolism of the objects outside the theatre is taken into account to reflect on the potential implications of this theatrical manipulation for Athenian civic identity. Examples will be taken from Bacchae\, Medea\, Oedipus Tyrannus and Ajax.\n\n \n\nFurther details of Bristol CA events: CLICK!\n\n \n\nAll talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Talks are not recorded. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Paul Cartledge \nThursday 9 March 2023\, 7pm \nLife and Sex in Sparta \n\n\n\nThis online-only event will take place at the start of March when legendary historian and Professor of Greek Culture Emeritus at the University of Cambridge\, Paul Cartledge\, sheds light on some of the more under-discussed aspects of ancient Spartan life and culture\, with a particular focus on love and relationships (NB: some ancient images shown may include erotic graphics). \nPaul came to visit Lytham St Annes back in 2016 and he has remained a friend to the branch\, and a tremendous support\, as patron of our national Classics Competition. A prolific writer and researcher\, he is also the President of the Hellenic Society\, an honorary citizen of (modern) Sparta\, and a holder of the Gold Cross of the Order of Honour of Greece.
