SUMMARY:Theatre and Politics in Classical Athens
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Liverpool Classical Association Programme 2022-23 collection\n\n \n\nThe lecture will look at the complementary relationship between tragedy and comedy in their engagement with contemporary Athenian politics.\n\n \n\nThu\, 23 February 2023\, 19:00 – 20:00 GMT\n\n \n\nLiverpool College Queens Drive Liverpool L18 8BG\n\n \n\n \n\nThe world of the Athenian tragic stage and the world of its audience present a striking contrast. The plays were performed at festivals sponsored and managed by the democracy. Yet the plays themselves (probably almost 1800 plays performed over the lifetime of the democracy) were almost invariably set in a remote world ruled by kings\, the world familiar from Homeric epic. At the same time\, the political experience and values of democratic Athens impact on the content of the plays in different\, sometimes disconcerting\, ways. The lecture will look at the complex and shifting relationship between tragedy and Athenian democracy and modern attempts to explain that relationship. Comedy engages more directly with contemporary politics; but even here the relationship between the world inside the theatre and the world outside proves slippery. The lecture will also look at the complementary relationship between tragedy and comedy in their engagement with contemporary Athenian political life.\n\n \n\nProfessor Chris Carey is Emeritus Professor of Greek at University College London. His research interests include Greek lyric poetry\, tragedy and comedy\, oratory\, rhetoric and law. He has published widely on Greek literature. He is a fellow of the British Academy. Chris is originally from Liverpool\n\n \n\nThe event will be held at Liverpool College\, Queen’s Drive\, Liverpool L18 8BG\n\n \n\nAccess to the venue\, Mossley Vale Hall\, Liverpool College\, is via the Prep School entrance on Queens Drive. There is very limited parking on site\, but on road parking on Queens Road and around Sefton Park. Use this link for location https://w3w.co/friday.pool.swift or alternatively there is a map here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1s-InZqt-W0tKgSEeSaD_CgnAFryb78az/view?usp=sharing entrance is on Queens Drive (marked with pink arrows and MV Hall is clearly marked)\n\n \n\nDoors open 6.30pm. Talk is 7-8pm followed by questions.\n\n \n\nPlease bring money for:\n\n \n\n Teas\, coffees and cakes available.\n \n Raffle\n \n Second hand books\n\n \n\nTo find out about all our events and to become a member of the Liverpool Classical Association: https://classicsforallnorth.org.uk/ca-north\n\n \n\nAs space is limited\, if you are unable to attend please cancel your ticket to enable others to come.\n\n \n\nThis event is organised in conjunction with The Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies

SUMMARY:Online Lecture by Emily Hauser on 'Homer's Women'
DESCRIPTION:Online talk on Homer’s Women by Dr Emily Hauser\, award-winning classicist and author of the acclaimed Golden Apple trilogy.\n\n27th February 17:30-19:00\n\n \nFURTHER DETAILS AND TO REGISTER\n \n\nAbstract: Homer’s Women\n\n \n\nThere has never been a better time to be a woman in Homer. Fictional retellings of Homer’s women have been flooding onto the market in recent years: Madeline Miller’s Circe (2018)\, Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls (2018) and The Women of Troy (2021)\, Natalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships (2019)\, as well as my own For the Most Beautiful (2016). But at the same time as all this\, modern research has been proceeding apace and historians like me have been making discoveries about the real world these women lived in: filling the gaps\, not only with the world of imagination\, but with the real\, lived experience of these incredible women. This talk explores the non-fiction reality (as far as we know it) behind the Homeric women that have hit the mainstream in recent years\, and caught the interest of so many readers. It explores each of Homer’s women in turn\, from Helen to Calypso\, Circe to Penelope\, delving into original ancient Greek texts\, re-reading ancient histories\, and unravelling new archaeological evidence in search of the real women in Homer.

SUMMARY:Landscapes of Roman Britain: A Lecture by Martin Millett
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 15 March 2023\, 6pm-7pm (UK time) or view online at:\n\nhttps://www.gresham.ac.uk/whats-on/roman-landscapes\n\nGresham College\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, 30 Holborn\, London EC1N 2HH\n\nWe used to think Roman Britain was a largely untamed natural landscape of woodland with occasional opulent villas representing the houses of an alien elite\, set side by side with scattered peasant settlements. Archaeological work since the 1940s has radically altered this understanding through a combination of large-scale excavation and a revolution in remote sensing techniques\, revealing a more varied picture of housing\, farming\, settlement and industry. This lecture will explore our current knowledge of the nature of Roman imperialism and the history of Britain.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nProfessor Millett will say\, “In the last quarter century there has been a revolution in our knowledge of the landscape of Roman Britain. This has been the result of a vast increase in the amount of evidence available for analysis – a product of changes in both how we identify past activity through archaeology as well as a growth in fieldwork in advance of development.”\n\nThis lecture is hybrid as you can watch online\, in person or on replay at a later date.
