SUMMARY:Landscapes of Roman Britain: A Lecture by Martin Millett
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 15 March 2023\, 6pm-7pm (UK time) or view online at:\n\nhttps://www.gresham.ac.uk/whats-on/roman-landscapes\n\nGresham College\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, 30 Holborn\, London EC1N 2HH\n\nWe used to think Roman Britain was a largely untamed natural landscape of woodland with occasional opulent villas representing the houses of an alien elite\, set side by side with scattered peasant settlements. Archaeological work since the 1940s has radically altered this understanding through a combination of large-scale excavation and a revolution in remote sensing techniques\, revealing a more varied picture of housing\, farming\, settlement and industry. This lecture will explore our current knowledge of the nature of Roman imperialism and the history of Britain.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nProfessor Millett will say\, “In the last quarter century there has been a revolution in our knowledge of the landscape of Roman Britain. This has been the result of a vast increase in the amount of evidence available for analysis – a product of changes in both how we identify past activity through archaeology as well as a growth in fieldwork in advance of development.”\n\nThis lecture is hybrid as you can watch online\, in person or on replay at a later date.

SUMMARY:'Classical Myth and Music' at KCL
DESCRIPTION:From Emily Pillinger…\n\n \n\nThere are still some spaces for an exciting interactive workshop at King’s on ‘Classical Myth and Music’\, for students aged 14-18\, on the afternoon of Friday March 24. Please feel free to email me for full info and to book: emily.pillinger@kcl.ac.uk.\n\n \n\nHere at King’s we are collaborating with a wonderful composer\,\n\n \n\n@CherylHoad\, and a fantastic librettist\, Jeanne Pansard-Besson\, in the writing of some new staged music that tells the story of Penelope from Homer’s epic poem\, the Odyssey.\n\n \n\nInspired by Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Penelopiad’\, our creative artists are experimenting with how to give a musical voice to Penelope and to the enslaved girls working in her palace. The piece\, called ‘Penelope’s Web’\, is still evolving.\n\n \n\nCheryl and Jeanne have been inviting different groups of public participants\, including school students\, to learn more about the process of turning myth into music\, to contribute new ideas\, and to engage in a dialogue about the creative and performance process.\n\n \n\nWe are now excited to be reaching out to London schools to engage with the project! Students are invited to read Atwood’s ‘The Penelopiad’ in advance of the workshop.\n\n \n\nThey may also like to watch a short film about the project when it was hosted by @TORCHOxford: https://t.co/v9N2QxHsPg\n\n \n\nStudents will be given an opportunity to engage with the exhibition ‘Letters of Refuge’ organised by @artrefugeuk and @jcorkewebster\, as well as to take part in the workshop\, and to reflect on both projects in conversation with the researchers and artists involved in them.\n\n \n\nPlanned timetable:\n\n \n\n2.30pm Arrival and talk about studying at King’s (optional)\n3.15pm Tour of the Strand campus with a student ambassador (optional)\n3.45pm Break and refreshments 4pm Workshop on Penelope’s Web 6pm Finish

SUMMARY:ELCSS Easter Latin Revision Course 2023
DESCRIPTION:direct preparation for the GCSE examinations in the summer. Candidates will be coming to the end of Year 11 and will be readying themselves for examination. We will be revisiting aspects of the language specification that students generally find difficult\, like the indirect statement\, the ablative absolute\, and the uses of the subjunctive. These set-pieces feature in every GCSE examination paper and it is important that the grammatical knowledge of them is secure. We will look at these constructions in isolation\, and then also disguised in unseen passages of Latin\, where they can be more difficult to identify.\n\n \n\nThe course will run on Monday 3rd & Tuesday 4th April 2023.\n\n \nFURTHER INFORMATION

SUMMARY:Fragments\, a New Play about Euripides and Papyrology\, by @LASwiftClassics
DESCRIPTION:In the backroom of a library archive\, three papyrologists pore over some tattered fragments of papyrus\, 2000 years old. Could they be the remnants of a lost masterpiece by Euripides?  \nThe ancient text tells the story of Aeyptus\, a boy determined to avenge his murdered father and brothers. But how can he succeed when almost all of the script is missing? \nPiecing his story together will take you on a journey around the fragments in your own mind: memories\, assumptions\, things half-heard. \nInspired by the vast collections of ancient papyrus stored in museums around the world\, FRAGMENTS is an irreverent take on an ancient lost play: combining anarchic performance\, lo-fi imagery\, original music… and a whole lot of conjecture. \nThe Playground Theatre\, London: 14 April – 6 May – book tickets here \nThe Old Fire Station\, Oxford: 12 May – 13 May – book tickets here \nExplore the production at www.potentialdifference.org.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a pre-show talk aimed at school students on 26th April\, on the theme of ‘What’s lost from the ancient world and why does it matter?’. It will be suitable for A Level or GCSE students of Latin/Greek/Classical Civilisation. The talk will be held in the theatre venue (The Playground) at 5pm. The talk is free of charge. \n\n\n\nThey can offer school groups a discounted rate for tickets to the show itself: teachers should contact natalie@potentialdifference.org.uk to discuss your needs and she can arrange a code.

SUMMARY:'Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth': a talk by Dr. Andrew Shapland
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 11th May at 7pm\, the Bristol CA will be joined by Dr. Andrew Shapland of the Ashmolean Museum\, who will be delivering a talk on ‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’. As usual\, the talk will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall\, where refreshments will be available from 6:30pm.\n\n \n\nMythical Knossos was the location of the palace of King Minos and the Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. After over a century of excavation at the site\, archaeologists now regard it as the centre of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation\, the home of the earliest farmers in Europe and a thriving Greek and Roman city. This talk will trace the history of exploration of Knossos\, beginning with the early travellers searching for the mythical Labyrinth and ending with more recent discoveries\, which include human sacrifice. It will pay particular attention to the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans\, whose archive at the Ashmolean is the single most important resource for understanding the site of Knossos. The talk will coincide with the Ashmolean’s 2023 ‘Labyrinth’ exhibition.\n\n \n\nPlease sign up via the following Eventbrite link if you are interested in attending this event. Questions can be emailed to Barbara Bell bmbellmini@aol.com\, but all attendees must register via Eventbrite for tickets:https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/609824660977\n\n \n\nTickets are free for Bristol CA members and students\, and £5 for everyone else (payable at the door). You can sign up for multiple tickets under one Eventbrite registration\, but please be accurate in terms of numbers so that we can cater accordingly.\n\n \n\nThank you\, and we hope to see many of you there!
