SUMMARY:The Song of Arms and a Man\, 28/3 at KCL
DESCRIPTION:The Song of Arms and a Man\n\n\n \nSaturday 28th March\, 2020\, 7 – 9pm\nPOSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19\n\n\n \nat King’s College\, London\n\n\n \n170 Strand\, WC2R 2LS\n\n\n\nThe Latin Qvarter’s unique presentation of Virgil’s Aeneid is read by Matthew Hargreaves\, Emma Kirkby\, Llewelyn Morgan and Victoria Punch. \n\n\n\nGeorge Sharpley’s two-hour adaptation brings this thrilling epic alive\, telling the story of Aeneas’ struggle to fulfil his destiny as founder of Rome – from his escape from the burning ruins of Troy to his asylum and heart-breaking affair with the Carthaginian queen Dido and then his reluctant war with the inhabitants of his fated homeland of Italy. Selections of Virgil’s epic verse are read in the original Latin interspersed with an English narration which tells the whole story of the poem. \n\n\n\nThe Song of Arms and a Man echoes the ancient culture of public performance of poetry\, and is accompanied with live ancient music.

SUMMARY:‘Women in the Trojan War’
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 6th May\, 7pm – Dr Emily Hauser\n \n\n‘Women in the Trojan War’\n \n\nIn this talk\, Emily will return to one of the oldest stories of Greek myth – the Trojan War – and ask what happens when we look at the story from the point of view of the women. What did Helen really look like? Did the Amazons really cut off one of their breasts to fight in battle at Troy? And who was the Amazon queen with whom Achilles fell in love – and\, according to some sources\, had a child? Bringing myth and history together\, Emily will explore what historical fiction can do for us in re-imagining the stories and the voices of the women of ancient Greek myth. Emily is an award-winning classicist\, Lecturer at the University of Exeter\, and the author of the acclaimed Golden Apple trilogy that retells the stories of the women of Greek myth. She has been featured on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour and in The Guardian alongside Colm Tóibín and Natalie Haynes\, and her debut novel For the Most Beautiful was listed among the ‘28 Best Books for Summer’ in The Telegraph.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nAll talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register your interest. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 for visitors. Refreshments available from 6.30pm.\n\n \n\nThe Bristol Classical Association AGM will be on November 12\, 2019\, 12.30-2.00pm.

SUMMARY:UCL Ancient World and Classics Virtual Taster Day
DESCRIPTION:From the organiser…\n\n \n\nDear Students and Teachers\,\n\nthe UCL Greek and Latin department invites you to the upcoming  UCL Ancient World and Classics Virtual Taster Day\, to be held virtually on Wednesday 20th May\, 2:00-3:30 pm. \n\n \n\n\nWhat can we learn from a Greek play? How does learning Latin help us to understand the modern languages of Europe and beyond? What can archaeological objects found in the Near East tell us about how people lived in the ancient world? At the upcoming UCL Ancient World and Classics taster day our lecturers will study closely these and related questions. They will give you a sense of what it is like to study Classics and the Ancient World at the undergraduate level at UCL.\n\n \n\nDuring the taster day\, you will learn about the degree-structure and the many exciting pathways you can follow. You will also learn about the departmental Greek play\, organised and run by students and performed at UCL’s Bloomsbury Theatre every year. You will listen to one 30 min long taster lecture by one of our departmental lecturers\, Dr. Rosie Harman\, providing you with a real flavour of what studying the Ancient World and Classics at the university level is like. You will also have the chance to meet (virtually) current undergraduates and ask them questions about their experience at UCL.\n\n \n\nTo register\, please follow this link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ucl-classics-and-ancient-world-taster-day-iii-2020-tickets-103417071244\n\nIn addition to the taster day\, our lecturers continue to offer taster lectures on demand via video link. If you are interested in organising one of these in your school\, please get in touch with Elena Cagnoli Fiecconi (Outreach Officer and Lecturer in Ancient Philosophy) at e.fiecconi@ucl.ac.uk\n\n \n\nFinally\, if you are curious to learn more about some ancient readings that may help us to make sense of these difficult times\, see here some suggestions from our lecturers.\n\nLooking forward to meeting many of you at the taster day!\n\nall best Dr. Elena Cagnoli Fiecconi

The first scientists were known as physiologoi\, or men who discoursed about nature (physis). Each tried to put his various observations together in a way that constituted a coherent\, unified model. This lecture discusses the pioneering physical theories of Thales\, Anaximander\, Anaximenes\, Anaxagoras and Democritus.\n\n\n\nhttps://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/birth-of-physics\n\n\n\nThursday 5 March 2020\, 1pm\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\n\n\n\nEngineering: Archimedes of Syracuse\n\n\n\nIn the 3rd century BCE\, the Sicilian polymath Archimedes advanced significantly human understanding of mathematics\, geometry and astronomy. By applying his discoveries to practical problems and physical phenomena\, he became the founder of statics and hydrostatics\, demonstrating how levers work and in turn creating unprecedented war machines such as ‘Archimedes’ claw’ and ‘heat-ray’.\n\n\n\nhttps://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/archimedes\n\n\n\nThursday 28 May 2020\, 1pm\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\n\n\n\nHippocrates and Ancient Greek Medicine\n\n\n\nThe birth of rational medicine contributed to the scientific revolution which occurred amongst eastern Greek communities in the 7th-to-5th centuries BCE. Medical professionals still take the oath of the ancient Greek doctor Hippocrates of Kos\, preserved along with his medical treatises. They are a consummation of many decades of medical practice and empirical observation\, showing methods similar to the eastern Aegean natural scientists in seeking physical causes rather than supernatural explanations for natural phenomena\, whether related to geology\, weather\, disease or injury.   https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/ancient-greek-medicine

SUMMARY:Roman Britain
DESCRIPTION:This programme of lectures is designed to support students and teachers taking GCSE and A level Classics Civilisation and Ancient History qualifications\, and is coordinated by Advocating Classical Education and the British Museum.\n\nFor all further information and to book go to: https://www.britishmuseum.org/school-lecture-classical-civilisation-and-ancient-history\n\nTroy: the World of the Hero\n\nFor Teachers \n\nThe British Museum’s exhibition on the ancient city of Troy reveals thrilling new dimensions on several components of the OCR qualification in both Classical Civilisation and Ancient History\, especially World of the Hero\, The Homeric World\, War and Warfare\, and Foundations of Rome. Teachers are invited to an event run by the Museum in partnership with the ACE Advocating Classics Education initiative at King’s College London. This combines a lecture by Professor Edith Hall on Homeric and Vergillian ideas of the hero with a free visit to the exhibition.\n\nMonday 13 January 2020            14.30 — 15.30\n\n\n\n\n\nOCR Classics in 20 British Museum Objects\n\nFor students and teachers\n\nThe British Museum houses a spectacular range of the objects prescribed in many of the components of the OCR qualifications in Classical Civilisation and Ancient History\, including the Parthenon sculptures\, the Cyrus Cylinder\, and images of Cleopatra. This event\, run in partnership by the Museum and the ACE Advocating Classics Education initiative at King’s College London\, provides teachers and their students with an exciting opportunity to look at\, learn about these objects—along with others relevant to the components—in the company of academic experts with rich experience of the OCR specifications.\n\nMonday 24 February 2020\n\n\n Session 1  GCSE Classical Civilisations              10.30 – 11.30\n Session 2  GCSE Ancient History                        11.30 – 12.30\n Session 3  A level Classical Civilisations             13.00 – 14.00\n Session 4  A level Ancient History                       14.00 – 15.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoman Britain\n\nFor students and teachers\n\nThe Roman province of Britannia existed for nearly 400 years from the initial Roman invasion in AD 43 to the end of Roman control in the British Isles around AD 411. What impact did Roman rule have on the province? Using objects on display in the British Museum as primary evidence\, this presentation will consider examples of change and continuity during this period of British history and the picture of life in Roman Britain built up by archaeological finds and sites. Just how Roman was Roman Britain?\n\nMonday 16 March 2020            11.00— 12.00\n\nMonday 3 July 2020                 11.00— 12.00

SUMMARY:Latin and Greek Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Join us at St Albans Cathedral this summer to immerse yourself in the literature\, language and culture of either Latin or New Testament Greek.\n\n \n\n \nLatin Summer School: Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’ Book II\n \nExplore some of Ancient Rome’s most famous poetry and improve your Latin in our summer school.\n \n\nDelving into the world and story of ancient Troy\, this five-day course will explore Virgil’s Aeneid Book II\, which details the fall of Troy and Aeneas’ escape. Over the course of the week\, students will be encouraged to read the Latin text and translate into English\, with help on the language from the tutor. Discussion of themes\, style and the broader literary and cultural influence of Book II and the Aeneid as a whole will pepper each day as we explore one of the most well-known books of the foremost poet of ancient Rome.\n\n \nGreek Summer School: Selections from the Greek New Testament\n \nExplore passages of the New Testament in this week-long summer school\, and delve further into your knowledge of NT Greek.\n \n\nThis course will explore a selection of passages from the Greek New Testament. To aid full comprehension\, there will be a keen focus on ‘literal translation’\, with participants invited (though not dragooned!) to read aloud a portion of the text and provide a rendering into literal English; class discussion will follow as we consider the nuances of the Greek in each passage\, how these have been rendered in translation and what significance\, if any\, these have on our overall understanding of the text and New Testament\, more broadly.\n\n \n\nMore information:\n\n \n\nLed by Anthony Armstrong\, Tutor in Latin and New Testament Greek\nLatin dates: Monday 27 July – Friday 31 July\, 10am-4pm\nGreek dates: Monday 3 August – Friday 7 August\, 10am-4pm\n£145 early bird rate (£155 if booked after 1 June) \n\n \n\nSuitable for students working at post-beginner and intermediate level. If you are unsure about the level\, please email us to check.\n\n \nClick here for the events and booking pages
