Please feel free to email me for full info and to book: emily.pillinger@kcl.ac.uk.\n\n \n\nHere at King’s we are collaborating with a wonderful composer\,\n\n \n\n@CherylHoad\, and a fantastic librettist\, Jeanne Pansard-Besson\, in the writing of some new staged music that tells the story of Penelope from Homer’s epic poem\, the Odyssey.\n\n \n\nInspired by Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Penelopiad’\, our creative artists are experimenting with how to give a musical voice to Penelope and to the enslaved girls working in her palace. The piece\, called ‘Penelope’s Web’\, is still evolving.\n\n \n\nCheryl and Jeanne have been inviting different groups of public participants\, including school students\, to learn more about the process of turning myth into music\, to contribute new ideas\, and to engage in a dialogue about the creative and performance process.\n\n \n\nWe are now excited to be reaching out to London schools to engage with the project! DESCRIPTION:MARCH 2023 – RENAISSANCE LATIN MASTERCLASSES 2023 \n\n \n\nThe Timothyseus Project is delighted to confirm the dates and times of our next Renaissance Latin masterclass for the Spring Term (January to April) 2023:\n\n \n\nMARCH 2023 \n\n \n\nAdvanced Latin: Reading and Translating Leonardo Bruni’s Historiarum Florentini populi libri XII (History of the Florentine People). \n\n \n\nWeek One\, Monday\, 6 March: The foundation of Florentia by Sulla’s veterans;\n\n \n\nWeek Two\, Monday\, 13 March: One power’s liberty is another’s subjugation: Bruni’s assessment of Roman domination;\n\n \n\nWeek Three\, Monday\, 20 March: The speech of Tegghiaio d’Aldobrando Adimari\, counselling the Florentine magistrates against war with Siena;\n\n \n\nWeek Four\, Monday\, 27 March: The outcome of the battle of the Arbia against Siena.\n\n \n\nThese four sessions will take place online via Zoom\, Monday evenings 6.00-8.00 p.m. London\, UK\, time (GMT). The tutor for this third masterclass will be Adam Greenwood\, MA\, Scholar of the Italian Renaissance and Greek and Latin Tutor for The Timothyseus Project. \n\n \n\nBernardo Rossellino\, Tomb of Leonardo Bruni\, 1446-48\, Santa Croce\, Florence. The following week\, translations will be compared and corrected and the Latin text itself discussed\, both in terms of grammar and style and in terms of historical and cultural context.\n\n \n\nThose interested in attending the above masterclass should note that a previous acquaintance with the Latin language is required to fully engage with the Latin texts. DESCRIPTION:direct preparation for the GCSE examinations in the summer. Candidates will be coming to the end of Year 11 and will be readying themselves for examination. We will be revisiting aspects of the language specification that students generally find difficult\, like the indirect statement\, the ablative absolute\, and the uses of the subjunctive. These set-pieces feature in every GCSE examination paper and it is important that the grammatical knowledge of them is secure. SUMMARY:'Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth': a talk by Dr. Andrew Shapland
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 11th May at 7pm\, the Bristol CA will be joined by Dr. Andrew Shapland of the Ashmolean Museum\, who will be delivering a talk on ‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’. As usual\, the talk will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall\, where refreshments will be available from 6:30pm.\n\n \n\nMythical Knossos was the location of the palace of King Minos and the Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. After over a century of excavation at the site\, archaeologists now regard it as the centre of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation\, the home of the earliest farmers in Europe and a thriving Greek and Roman city. This talk will trace the history of exploration of Knossos\, beginning with the early travellers searching for the mythical Labyrinth and ending with more recent discoveries\, which include human sacrifice. It will pay particular attention to the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans\, whose archive at the Ashmolean is the single most important resource for understanding the site of Knossos. Over 2\,500 years since the birth of tragedy\, the plays of Aeschylus\, Sophocles\, and Euripides continue to hold sway in our cultural imagination. Why are they still performed and what lessons do they have to teach us about life\, loss\, and the human condition?\n\nChaired by Sir Rabinder Singh (Chair of the Lawyers Group)\, this panel discussion with Professor Fiona Macintosh (St Hilda’s College\, Oxford) and Paul O’Mahony (Artistic Director\, Out of Chaos) will delve into the essence of tragedy\, what it has to tell us about law and justice\, and how its power lives on in modern life. \n\n \n\nThis is a hybrid event with opportunities to attend either in person or online.  This event is being hosted at Allen & Overy (One Bishops Square\, London\, E1 6AD). DESCRIPTION:Dr Chris Naunton \n27 April 2023\, 7pm \nDecoding the Hieroglyphs of Ancient Egypt \n\n\n\nDr Chris Naunton is an Egyptologist and author of Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt\, Egyptologists’ Notebooks and two books for children including Cleopatra Tells All! He has presented numerous television documentaries\, including The Man Who Discovered Egypt (BBC4 2012)\, Secrets of King Tut’s Treasures (Channel 5\, 2018)\, Egypt’s Lost Pyramid (Channel 4\, 2019) and most recently The Story of Egyptology (History Hit\, 2022). He was Director (CEO) of the Egypt Exploration Society from 2012 to 2016 and President of the International Association of Egyptologists from 2015 to 2019. \nWe are hugely privileged that Chris will round off our 2022-23 programme in style\, when he will introduce a subject that is much loved amongst ancient world enthusiasts – how to decode Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs!

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 10 May\, at 5.30pm\, Professor Armand D’Angour will be giving a free online talk on ancient Greek music as the guest speaker for the Summer Term LSF Classics Lecture.\n\n \n\nABSTRACT: What did ancient Greek music sound like?\n\n \n\nMusic was ubiquitous in ancient Greece\, in celebrations and ceremonies and for drama and entertainment. Surviving ancient Greek poems preserve the lyrics and the rhythms of songs\, which were accompanied by instruments such as the lyre and aulos (double-pipes). The Greeks even devised a notation system in the 5th century BC\, and a few dozen notated scores survive that give us a better understanding of how music sounded 2500 years ago. This talk will describe how recent research has led to new insights about the sounds of ancient music.\n\n \n\nThe talk will be held on Teams. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 11th May\, 7pm – Dr. Andrew Shapland (Ashmolean)\n‘Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth’\n\n \n\nMythical Knossos was the location of the palace of King Minos and the Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. After over a century of excavation at the site\, archaeologists now regard it as the centre of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation\, the home of the earliest farmers in Europe and a thriving Greek and Roman city. This talk will trace the history of exploration of Knossos\, beginning with the early travellers searching for the mythical Labyrinth and ending with more recent discoveries\, which include human sacrifice. It will pay particular attention to the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans\, whose archive at the Ashmolean is the single most important resource for understanding the site of Knossos. DESCRIPTION:6th June 4-5:30pm | FREE\n\n \n\nThe Classical Association Teaching Board in collaboration with Classics for All presents a free online event for teachers of GCSE and A Level Classical Civilisation.\n\n \n\nThis after-school event\, led by a panel of experienced Classical Civilisation teachers will showcase new online resources that have been developed to support the qualifications\, and suggest how these can be used to encourage independent learning in and out of the classroom.\n\n \n\nThe panel will also facilitate the sharing of teaching strategies and other resources\, and answer any questions on their respective topics.\n\n \n\nThis session will be relevant both to experienced practitioners\, and those new to teaching the subject.\n\n \n\nThis session will be recorded and made available after the event to all those who register.\n\n \n\nRegistration is free but will close on Sunday 4th June at 11pm. SUMMARY:Populism\, Aristotle and Hope: a talk by Rory Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 8 Jun 2023\, 18:00\n\n \n\nThe Old Library\, Guildhall\n\n \n\nThe period from 1988 to 2003\, was one of extraordinary optimism. Every year the number of democracies increased\, human rights improved\, violent conflict reduced\, there were fewer refugees and there was less global poverty. It was an era of triumph for the western liberal Democratic model for the United States and the politics of the centre ground.\n\n \n\nBut the next 11 years was disrupted by series of humiliating shocks to the west – the fiasco of the Iraq war\, the global financial crisis\, and the emergence of social media all contributed to the loss of faith in the western economic model. This was the period when China having joined the World Trade Organisation grew rapidly larger than the French British German Japanese economies. A period when new democracies ceased to emerge. When the Arab Spring cruelly exposed the false hopes of a Facebook revolution. Public confidence in the future waned.\n\n \n\nThis was the prelude for the new age\, beginning in 2014 – the age of populism. From the election of Narendra Modi in India\, through Brexit\, Trump and Bolsonaro – a new form of politics\, emerged on four continents – pitching an imagined “people“ against an “elite“ exploiting the new potential of social media and growing resentment\, to inflame polarisation. Politics became even more vicious and divisive. The pragmatic centre ground disappeared.\n\n \n\nAcross the world\, the number of democracies began to shrink\, violent conflict increased\, refugees increased so did civilian deaths in conflict. And in 2022\, the Russian invasion of Ukraine brought a new authoritarian inflection to the age of populism. China\, whose economy in 2005 was still smaller than that of the United Kingdom now had an economy seven times larger. The rise of UAE and Saudi reinforced the prestige of authoritarian economic powers. Western failures to respond to the crisis in Syria and Crimea undermined their credibility. The United States and Europe struggling both to come to terms of their own colonial histories and divisions within their own country\, lurched into isolation. International development aid reduced. Poverty in Africa continued to explode.\n\n \n\nMany of the fundamental structures which drove the stagnation\, polarisation and collapse remain today. Nevertheless\, there is a maturity and reality to the centre ground which should still be a source of inspiration.\n\n \n\nReenergising the centre requires rediscovering the fundamental principles of Aristotle‘s theory of language. The combination of logos\, Athos\, and ethos. Hope\, reality\, and truth can\, and should suggest a better future for the democratic politics and the global order.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, A level Classical Civilisation teachers from  Sixth Form/FE  Colleges in Shrewsbury\, Hereford \, Worcester and Richard Huish (Somerset) have a very  informal meet up  to share different teaching ideas and resources they have created. It’s proved a great support to all of us in the past. This year\, we’d love to widen the invitation to all\,  especially to those who teach in Sixth forms/FE. SUMMARY:Classical Association of Ireland Latin Summer School (June 19th – 30th 2023)
DESCRIPTION:The Classical Association of Ireland Latin Summer School 2023 provides an exciting opportunity to learn Latin through a two-week immersion. The Latin Summer School is designed for secondary school students between the ages of 12 and 18.  The courses will be taught by experienced language teachers and will consist of three meetings per day with intervals for study between sessions.  The courses will be held in person at Trinity College Dublin\, Classics Department\, and online via Zoom for those who want to learn remotely.\n\n \n\nOver the course of two weeks\, you will immerse yourself in the language of Rome and engage in a variety of fun activities\, led by experienced and passionate teachers.
