SUMMARY:Alcestis\, the Bradfield Play 2019
DESCRIPTION:In the words of Polly Caffrey\, Head of Classics at Bradfield…\n\n \n\n“We are bringing our Greek play back into line with the Oxford –Bradfield- Cambridge triennial and putting on “Alcestis” in June 2019\, a mere two years on from Persae 2017.\n\n \n\nAs you would expect from Euripides there will be something for everyone (laughter\, tears\, ott masks\, etc) but a special highlight will be the solo songs and the Kommos reconstructed by Prof Armand D’Angour especially for the production\, with Barnaby Brown playing the reconstructed ancient double aulos (alongside splendid Victorian choral music from the 1887 Oxford “Alcestis” by C H Lloyd\, a pupil of Parry).”

SUMMARY:Cultural interaction in Europe in the period of classical antiquity
DESCRIPTION:1:30 pm to 2:30 pm\, 07 June 2019\n\n \n\nLinked to the anniversary of the introduction of the Euro\, which symbolizes a further stage in the ‘European project’\, this talk will discuss cultural interactions in ancient Europe\, especially between Greece and Rome in the classical period.\n\n \n\nIt will explore the situation that the first ‘Roman’ poets\, who were not Roman nationals\, adopted elements of Greek literature and transformed them into something that was comprehensible\, relevant and interesting to a Roman audience\, and then consider how Roman literature and culture was spread over most of Europe with the expansion of the Roman empire. This will provide the basis for some reflection on the extent to which these developments in the ancient world can be illuminating for the present when the concept of ‘Europe’ is much discussed.\n\n \n\nGesine Manuwald is Professor of Latin and currently Head of UCL’s Department of Greek and Latin. Teaching of Classics began at UCL in 1828\, and the department offers a variety of interdisciplinary Undergraduate and Graduate degree programmes in classical literature\, culture and history.\n\n \n\nFurther information: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/festival-of-culture/events/2019/jun/cultural-interaction-europe-period-classical-antiquity

To coincide with her latest novel\, A Thousand Ships\, she will take audiences on a tour around Trojan War\, the greatest conflict in ancient literature\, perhaps in literature full stop. From the causes of the war (divine displeasure) to its complex aftermath\, this show encompasses some of the greatest poetry ever written: The Iliad\, The Odyssey\, The Oresteia\, The Trojan Women and much more. The stories of the women whose lives the war affected have been largely untold\, from the Amazon warrior\, Penthesilea\, to the priestess who saw the whole thing coming\, Cassandra. Continuing a project she began with her novel\, The Children of Jocasta\, Natalie takes the women out of the shadows and puts them back where they belong: in the middle of the story.

SUMMARY:Aristotle’s Lyceum
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 30 May 2019\, 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall\, London \nAristotle’s Lyceum https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/aristotle-lyceum \nIn the 330s BCE\, the great philosopher and scientist\, Aristotle of Stagira in northern Greece\, returned to Athens and founded his Lyceum. The first institution in world history to encompass teaching\, research and the collection of a vast library\, the Lyceum immediately began to revive even Plato’s Academy in international reputation. This lecture looks at the archaeological site of the Lyceum\, discovered accidentally in 1996\, and asks how the remains can illuminate Aristotle’s life\, work\, and incomparable contribution across academic disciplines\, from Political Theory and Aesthetics to Zoology\, Physics and Astronomy.

The project brings artefacts from the past back to life – and they’re inviting you to do the same through the power of your story telling. Entrants are invited to write a short story inspired by one of the artefacts featured on the project’s blog: https://blogs.kent.ac.uk/egypt-artefacts/\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nWhy not get further inspiration by going to see the project’s free exhibition ‘Sounds of Roman Egypt’ at the Petrie Museum\, London? You should also make your story about it as vivid as possible by thinking about touch\, smell\, sight\, taste and sounds.\n\n \n\nRules  \n\n \n\n An entry form must be completed – you can download one from here: http://blogs.kent.ac.uk/clas/2019/01/17/schools-competition-2019/\n Length – no more than 1000 words.\n Subject matter – a story about one of the artefacts in the Roman and Late Antique Artefacts from Egypt: https://blogs.kent.ac.uk/egypt-artefacts/\n The text of the script needs to be double-spaced and in a font larger than Arial 11.\n The text of the script must be written in English.\n Entrants need to be attending a school/college in the United Kingdom – Years 7 to 13.  Students in Higher Education (e.g. Universities) may not enter the competition.\n Submission must be made by email to classicscripts@kent.ac.uk on a completed entry form that has been signed by a member of staff at your school or college.\n All scripts must be received by 6pm on 5 April 2019.\n\n \n\nJudging Process\nThe prize-winning scripts will be judged in relation to their accuracy\, originality and vividness by University of Kent staff from the Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies.\n\n \n\nQueries may be sent to classicscripts@kent.ac.uk\n\n \n\n\n\nUniversity of Kent Department of Classical &Archaeological Studies Short Story Competition for Schools Entry Form 2019\n\n\nName of Script-Writer/Entrant\n\n\n\nSchool of Script-Writer\n\n\n\nAddress of School\n\n\n\nStory (no more than 1000 words)\n\n\nConfirmation of Authorship:\nI confirm that the story above is my own work based on my own original ideas (with the proviso that advice has been given by teachers and friends verbally or in writing).\n\nSigned:\n\n\nSign-off by school/college staff member\n\n\nI confirm that the entrant named above is a member of the school named above\n\n\nName and position held (please print)\n\n\n\nSignature of staff member\n\n\n\nEmail address of staff member/school\n\n\n\n\n \n\nWe look forward to receiving your story submitted on this completed entry form to classicscripts@kent.ac.uk  by 6pm on Friday 5th April 2019. SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Theatre\, Oxford High School\, Belbroughton Road\, Oxford OX2 6XA\, main telephone: 01865 559888 \n \n Wednesday 13th March 2019\n4:30 – 6.00pm \n \n\n \n\nProfessor Matthew Nicholls is a specialist in the political and social history of the Romans and the way that the built environments of Rome and cities around the Roman Empire expressed their values and priorities. His talk will introduce students to his innovative and award-winning virtual 3D model of Ancient Rome.\n\n \n\nThis model makes ancient Rome accessible to thousands of pupils and students by virtually recreating the city\, including vast public buildings such as the Colosseum. This digital model of ancient Rome has proved to be an incredible teaching tool and has won the Guardian and Higher Academy National Teaching Excellence Award in 2014. How creative is the process of a 3D reconstruction of an ancient city? How can one start making their own digital models of the ancient world? Can 3D reconstruction prompt us to ask questions about the sources that inform our understanding of ancient Rome?\n\n \n\nThe talk will be followed by a Question and Answer session and it will be of direct relevance to anyone studying a Classical subject in years 9-13 and\, of course\, to anyone who is interested in Classics\, History\, Archaeology and/or Computer Science.\n\n \n\nThere is no charge for this event. Students under 16 should be accompanied by their teacher but sixth formers are welcome to join us independently. To book your place please email Dr Niki Karapanagioti at n.karapanagioti@oxf.gdst.net with a list of names as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 8th March.

SUMMARY:Christopher Whitton Talk on Tacitus
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Whitton (Emmanuel College\, Cambridge) will speak about Tacitus on Tuesday 12th March at 1:30pm at Saint Olave’s Grammar School\, Kent.\n\n \n\nYou are most welcome to join us. If you intend to come\, please do inform us of numbers ASAP and the names of any accompanying teachers.\n\n \n\nThe talk should be suitable for GCSE and A-Level Latinists and indeed anyone with an interest in the Classical World and Ancient History.\n\n \n\nA talk will also be given by a member of staff on an aspect of the syllabus relating to Greece. If you would like to speak yourself as part of a panel about an aspect of the ancient world\, please do contact us. It would be most useful for the students to hear different Classicists’ opinions on the ancient world and to ask questions to different teachers.\n\n \n\nhttp://www.saintolaves.net/\n\n \n\nContact: Alex Carroll acarroll@saintolaves.net

SUMMARY:Reading Classical Latin: Cicero and Ovid
DESCRIPTION:A weekend course by the Institute of Continuing Education\, Cambridge University. \nCicero was Rome’s leading orator and this weekend you have the opportunity to read one of his superbly moulded speeches: in Pro Caelio\, Cicero defends young Marcus Caelius Rufus on charges of political violence. This is no dry legal speech\, but one in which Cicero uses his acerbic rhetoric to attack his client’s lover\, Clodia – painting a vivid picture of the violent times of the Roman Republic. If you prefer myth to the reality of the court room\, then choose to read Book 3 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, where you will encounter mad dogs\, a fiery thunderbolt and a boy falling in love with…his own reflection. There is never a dull moment in Ovid’s witty re-writing of Greek myth. Whichever text you choose\, there will be plenty of friendly discussion as we wrestle together with the power of the Latin language. \nFurther Information
