Gratius Avitus.\n\n \n\nThe Session 1 (Mon 1 Jul – Fri 19 Jul 2019) Module «Latin Usage: Idiomatic Proficiency and Teaching» will focus on the fine nuances of classical Latin usage\, providing both the practical and the academic tools to identify\, analyse\, evaluate\, and replicate\, classical Latin idiom\, registers and styles\, not only through direct work on model classical works selected (Terence\, Cicero\, Virgil) alongside their various Latin commentators (Donatus\, Macrobius\, Servius)\, but also in the light of the latest scholarship in the subject (Dickey & Chahoud). It will further aim to develop skills and resources to teach Latin usage effectively\, following the natural method (Ørberg) and the communicative approach (Harmer).\n\n \n\nThe Session 2 (Mon 22 Jul – Fri 9 Aug 2019) Module «The Latin Literature of European Britain» will provide a thorough hands-on introduction to the magnificent heritage of British Latin literature and its constituent importance as part of the wider European culture conveyed in Latin. It will provide an overview of periods and genres (Ijsewijn\, Lapidge\, Rigg)\, and dwell on detailed commentary and discussion of specific key texts (Monmouth\, More\, Francis Bacon)\, for familiarisation with both form (linguistic quality\, specificities\, style) and content (legend\, history\, politics\, philosophy\, science)\, additionally turning to epistolary correspondance for further exploration of the enriching connections cultivated by British scholars\, monarchs\, philosophers and scientists\, with their continental counterparts (e.g. More with Erasmus).\n\n \n\nThese are undergraduate credit bearing modules (each constituting a UCL 0.5 course unit\, i.e. 4 US credits\, 15 UK credits\, 7.5 European ECTS) but they are open to all\, including Latin teachers seeking training in active use of Latin as a way to improve efficiency in teaching the language\, and Latin researchers and scholars eager to develop the skills to delve into the texts in their original tongue. Courses like these consitute a first in the UK and are an excellent opportunity to visit London with access to its wonderful museums and libraries.\n\n \n\nAs has been variously shown (cf. for instance «guest speakers» at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/classics/study/undergraduate/teachingprojects/Living-Latin-Workshop/Index)\, passive knowledge of the language should allow participants to follow the course with confidence from the start\, and the 45 hours of language immersion per module (90 hours in total) will put committed participants in a position successfully to pursue the coursework and complete the assessment in Latin (although assessment is voluntary for those not taking the course for credit).\n\n \n\nThe UCL Summer School is expected to bring together an international gathering of committed Latinists.\n\n \n\nFees: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/summer-school/fees\n\n \n\nTo apply: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/summer-school/your-application

SUMMARY:Modern Greek Courses with The Greek Project
DESCRIPTION:Adventures in Greek Language 1 (Higher Elementary)\n \nDates:             Tuesday 20 August – Tuesday 27August 2019\nLocation:        Xanthi\, Greece\nPrice:              £730.00 per person\n \nHow to learn a difficult language and have some fun at the same time? That’s always been the challenge for language teachers and learners alike. This week-long intensive course\, however\, plans to do just that and in a stimulating environment where you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practice your Greek with local people. This course is designed for those who have some basic grounding of the language – amounting to two years or more of evening class Greek or an equivalent knowledge – including an ability to say simple things in the past\, present and future. As your teacher\, Ellie’s aim will be to build upon this base so that your have more confidence understanding and responding to native Greek speakers in a variety of everyday situations. The mornings will involve widening out your knowledge of different tenses\, grammar\, sentence structures and vocabulary but always with an ear to how Greeks themselves converse colloquially. The course will also involve plenty of audio-visual exercises including lots of listening\, media extracts\, and one on one conversation. Quizzes\, games and songs will also add some sparkle!\n \nHowever\, nourishing your growing knowledge of Greek in its various social and cultural contexts will also take us out of the classroom in the afternoons\, into the small\, yet historically rich and multifaceted university-city of Xanthi – dubbed ‘the city of a thousand colours’ and its very beautiful\, surrounding Rhodope and Nestos valley countryside. There’ll be a full day excursion to somewhere exciting\, as well as to Abdera\, a classical site of some significance close to Ellie’s home village. But equally importantly\, our walks\, talks and other activities\, whether to the famous Xanthi bazaar\, to local museums\, kafenion or tavernas\, will all have elements of listening to and speaking with Greek family\, friends and acquaintances. There’s sure to be a dance workshop and perhaps a culinary one too\, the latter\, possibly somewhere very special\, and with the coast just a few miles away\, there will also be opportunities to cool off from the summer heat by way of complete beachside relaxation and a swim.\n \nIf you’ve got any questions about the level of the course or anything else\, just contact us and Ellie will send you an e-mail or give you a call. If you’d like to express an interest or find out more\, please also get in touch by way of the enquiry form.\n \nPrice includes\n \n– 22 hours intensive language tuition.\n \n– Three star\, twin bed\, hotel accommodation\, breakfast and and three other main meals during the course of the week\, plus all advertised walks\, talks\, dance workshop and transport to and from Thessaloniki airport.\n \n– Price does not include flight to\, or from Greece or additional excursions.\n \n-Single room supplement.\n \nCourse Leader: Ellie. Itinerary and full details on request.\n \nContact  info@greekproject.co.uk\n \n\n\n \n\n\nAdventures in Greek Language II  (Higher Intermediate)\n \nDates :            Wednesday 28 August – Wednesday 4 September 2019\nLocation:        Thessaloniki\nPrice:              £730.00 per person\n \nDo you already speak some Greek but are not sufficiently confident yet to have wide-ranging conversations with native speakers? If so\, this week-long intensive course could be for you. The course is designed for Hellenophiles who have been learning modern Greek for some years – perhaps in a classroom environment – but who have had less opportunity to express their ideas\, thoughts and opinions in Greek in a more complex\, nuanced and fluent way. Our four hours of intensive classroom learning each day will involve some grammar but the greater emphasis will be on listening to\, speaking and understanding Greek as it is spoken in everyday situations. As your teacher\, Ellie’s aim will also be to present you with a range of topical cultural\, social\, political and economic issues which will expand your vocabulary and get you talking about them. We will be using a range of newspaper and magazine articles\, short stories\, poetry and film – not to say quizzes\, games and songs – to this effect as well as to deepen your knowledge of contemporary Greece.\n \nNourishing your growing knowledge of Greek in its various social and cultural contexts will also take us out of the classroom into a humming\, always vibrant city Historically multicultural\, our tour of the upper town of Ano poli\, will offer an opportunity to explore the many Byzantine\, Ottoman\, Jewish as well as Greek aspects of Salonika. So too will our engagement with the city’s wonderful markets. Food is at the heart of what makes Salonika\, Thessaloniki. And to celebrate that Ellie will be organising a hands-on culinary workshop and\, with it\, a communally prepared feast : something on our previous tours which has never failed to delight. For good measure too and to get us beyond the bustle of our cosmopolitan hub we’ll also have a day out in Salonika’s luminous countryside where we’ll be heading in search of one of our favourite vineyards as well as Vergina\, the quite extraordinary (if politically charged) site of classical Macedonia’s royal tombs.\n \nIf you’ve got any questions about the level of the course or anything else\, just contact us and Ellie will send you an e-mail or give you a call. If you’d like to express an interest or find out more\, please also get in touch by way of the enquiry form.\n \nPrice includes\n \n– 22 hours intensive language tuition.\n \n-Three star\, twin bed\, hotel accommodation\, breakfast and three other main meals during the course of the week\, plus all advertised walks\, talks\, workshops and and trip into Thessaloniki’s countryside.\n \n– Price does not include flight to\, or from Greece.\n \n– Single room supplement.\n \nCourse Leader: Ellie. SUMMARY:The Song of Arms and a Man
DESCRIPTION:The Guildford Classical Association is presenting the Latin Qvarter’s adaptation of Virgil’s classic and ever more timely story of a refugee leading his people from the east\, performed in Latin and English.\n\nThe Song of Arms and a Man presents Aeneas’ struggle to fulfil his destiny as founder of Rome – from his escape from the burning ruins of Troy to his asylum and heart-breaking affair with the Carthaginian queen Dido and his reluctant war with the inhabitants of his fated homeland of Italy. \nThe performance will feature selections of Virgil’s Aeneid\, read in the original Latin epic verse by trained singers\, alongside an English narration which tells the whole story of the poem. This innovative and acclaimed presentation of a rarely heard masterpiece echoes the ancient culture of public performance of poetry. \nGeorge Sharpley’s adaptation of this extraordinarily musical poem is read by Emma Kirkby\, Matthew Hargreaves\, Elizabeth Donnelly and Llewelyn Morgan. The performance aims to introduce Virgil’s Aeneid to those new to Latin\, and recapture the magic for those familiar with the poem. \n\nInformation and tickets

SUMMARY:The Song of Arms and a Man
DESCRIPTION:BOOK BEFORE 5th NOVEMBER TO GET A FREE PROGRAMME (otherwise £5 at the door) \n\n\n\nThe story of Aeneas\, warrior and refugee\, in the original Latin verse with an English linking narrative \n\n\n\nThe Song of Arms and a Man tells the story of Aeneas’ escape from Troy\, his stay with Dido and his struggle to fulfil his destiny as founder of Rome. These Latin readings from Virgil’s Aeneid are selective\, but with the help of an English narration tell the whole story of the poem\, rarely heard\, in a unique presentation of the original verse\, echoing the ancient culture of public performance of poetry. \n\n\n\nGeorge Sharpley’s adaptation of this extraordinarily musical poem is read by Emma Kirkby\, Matthew Hargreaves\, Elizabeth Donnelly and Llewelyn Morgan. \n\n\n\nThis is for all\, including those new to Latin. \n\n\n\nTo book tickets: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-song-of-arms-and-a-man-tickets-72852067495 \n\n\n\nMore information at St John’s College site: https://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/live-retelling-virgils-epic-poem-comes-cambridge

SUMMARY:19th Dorothy Buchan Memorial Lecture in Ancient History\, Leicester\, 26. Nov - Prof. Judith Mossman
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\, \nIt is now possible to register (via Eventbrite\, link below) to attend the 19th Dorothy Buchan Memorial Lecture in Ancient History\, which will be held at the University of Leicester on 26th November 2019. Our speaker will be Professor Judith Mossman (Coventry University). The lecture will take place at 5.30 p.m. on campus in Ken Edwards Building\, Lecture Theatre 2. Tea and coffee will be available in the foyer of the School of Archaeology & Ancient History Building from 4.30 p.m. \nThe event is free but please use the following link to register your interest/intention to attend: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2019-dorothy-buchan-memorial-lecture-prof-judith-mossman-tickets-78389247349. Please also indicate at the same time whether you will be joining us for tea and coffee prior to the lecture. If you are bringing a group (10+) or would like to dine with the speaker after the event (at your own expense)\, please contact the convener\, Dr Nikki Rollason via email at nkr4@le.ac.uk\, by 20th November. \nThe title of Professor Mossman’s talk is ‘At Home in Chaironeia: Domestic Detail in Plutarch’. \nAbstract: ‘Plutarch is an author whose self-representation is particularly prominent and particularly attractive. This applies to all his works\, even his biographies (especially at the start of some Lives). Part of this persona is his portrayal of his domestic setting and his home town. In works such as Table Talk\, and the Consolation to his Wife\, the family setting is important in many ways and is expressed partly through the detailed description of domestic objects and arrangements. The fact that Plutarch includes domestic detail in scenes in his biographies\, too\, including scenes of violence and death\, suggests that he was alert to the potential for pathos and the opportunities for characterisation inherent in the description of domestic life in a domestic setting.’ \nWe look forward to seeing you in November. \nBest wishes \nProf. Graham Shipley and Dr Nikki Rollason\nSchool of Archaeology and Ancient History\nUniversity of Leicester.
