SUMMARY:Troy: Story\, Archaeology and Legend: A Hellenic Society & Roman Society Online Course
DESCRIPTION:Lesley Fitton\n \nTroy: story\, archaeology and legend\n \n\nWednesday 19\, 26 November\, 3\, 10 December\, 6pm-7.30pm (UK time)\n\n \n\nThe story of Troy was deeply engrained in ancient Greek culture\, art and thought. It continued to resonate in different ways through subsequent ages\, and still exerts a powerful fascination today. Equally fascinating is the story of the search for Troy\, the rediscovery of the ancient site and the often-dramatic archaeological finds made there. This course will give the opportunity to consider and discuss both the real and the imagined Troy\, and will explore some of the reasons for the enduring power of one of the world’s great stories.\n\n \n\nSessions may be followed live\, or watched afterwards at your own convenience (lectures will be available for up to one month after the final session).\n\n \n\nFor more information and to book:\n\n \n\nhttps://www.hellenicandromanlibrary.org/Events/Event-Registration/EventId/23

Further details will follow closer to the event.\n\n \n\nWe hope you and your students will join us for what promises to be a challenging\, enjoyable\, and sociable evening\, as students test their knowledge\, meet others with similar interests\, and celebrate their enthusiasm for the ancient world.\n\n \n\nKind Regards\,\n\n \n\nZ Boland\nHead of Department

Using different types of evidence – including inscriptions\, statues\, and even coins – we will find out more about the gods brought to Britain by the Romans as well as the gods they found here\, and learn how to identify them in the wild! \n\n\n\nThis session is a repeat and updated session from the 2024 focus day\, ”The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the gods\, goddess and Hadrian’s wall.’‘ \n\n\n\n10.50am – 11.20am – Nick Henderson – information to come \n\n\n\n11.30am – 12noon – Hadrian’s Wall 180 – a time travel experience with Richard from Time Machine Designs \n\n\n\nThis session will take you on a journey along Hadrian’s Wall as it is thought to have appeared in the year 180CE. Time Machine Designs has created the world’s first complete reconstruction of the Hadrian’s Wall system using historical and archaeological research\, 3D modelling software and Microsoft’s Flight Simulator game.  By the end of the session you will have seen Hadrian’s Wall from the air and how it fitted into the landscape\, learned about its turrets\, milecastles\, forts\, villages and harbours and seen whose houses would have been demolished by the Romans! \n\n\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \n\n\n\nWednesday 26 November 2025\n\n\n\n9.30am – 10am – Climate vs Archaeology: A Battle for the Past with the Vindolanda Trust \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you will become archaeology detectives as you put climate change under the microscope. In this interactive session\, using the different pieces of evidence that archaeologists have excavated at Roman Vindolanda and Magna Forts\, we will investigate the life of people living along Hadrian’s Wall 2\,000 years ago. But what would happen if none of this evidence was available to us? By the end of the session\, we will understand how climate change is impacting buried archaeology to understand what we might lose in the future. \n\n\n\nDue to it’s success this is a repeat session from our 2024 event. \n\n\n\n10.10am – 10.40am  –  Roots along Hadrian’s Wall with Laura from Classics for All  \n\n\n\nWhy do so many towns and cities end in -caster and -chester? What is the CR in King Charles’ monogram? What does Hadrian’s Wall have to do with the English language? Find out how inscriptions left by soldiers along Hadrian’s Wall can boost your students’ literacy skills and recognition of word roots. This interactive session will gently introduce KS2 students to English etymology and morphology\, unlocking the Latin roots of hundreds of English words and boosting their linguistic skill set. \n\n\n\n10.50am – 11.20am – Dark Skies Through Roman Eyes with Northumberland National Park  \n\n\n\nNorthumberland National Park is home to the darkest skies in England – officially the best place to see stars\, planets\, meteor showers\, and the northern lights. But what did the Romans see when they looked up at the night sky? In this interactive session\, pupils will find out how important the stars and planets were to the Romans\, and how their special connection to the night sky has influenced modern day astronomers. \n\n\n\nThis session is a repeat and updated session from our 2023 focus day. \n\n\n\n11.30am – 12noon– Roman life at the opposite ends of Roman Britain with Helen from English Heritage Find out more about the site of the Roman invasion of Britain at Richborough\, which saw the prime of Roman occupation and compare it with one of the largest forts on the Northern edge of the empire. Explore who lived there\, what did they do and what was life like for them through an interactive session and decide where would you have preferred to be. \n\n\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \n\n\n\nThursday 27 November 2025\n\n\n\n9.30am – 10am – Colour by Science: What can the scientific archaeology teach us about Hadrian’s Wall?  with Jo and Andrew from the Great North Museum: Hancock \n\n\n\nDid you know that archaeologists use science as well as history skills? Find out how scientific techniques can be used to learn about an object’s history. Compare Hadrian’s Wall to another Roman wall (did you know there were others?!) and use your new-found skills to decide how much we can learn about Hadrian’s Wall from another Roman wall. \n\n\n\nThis session is a repeat and updated session from 2024 focus day\, ”I enjoyed learning about the different colours of Roman Britain” \n\n\n\n10.10am – 10.40am  – Bathing at the Frontier with Susan and Kirsty from Segedunum Roman Fort  \n\n\n\nBathhouses were an important part of Roman Identity and were present throughout the Roman Empire\, even at Hadrian’s Wall.  Join us at Segedunum\, Hadrian’s Walls most easterly fort to look at the remains we have here\, what bathhouses were like\, and why they were such an important part of Roman Life! \n\n\n\n10.50am – 11.20am – Rollin’ with the Romans: Entertainment on The Wall with Liana from Tullie \n\n\n\nThey liked to battle\, bathe and build… but what did the Roman soldiers on the wall do for fun? Join Tullie (and a very jolly Roman Soldier) for an exciting time-travelling adventure\, using artefacts from our collections (and some silliness!) to learn about thedifferent ways the Romans entertained themselves. During this interactive session your class will share ideas in the chat\, answer polls\, meet some lively characters\, act along\, examine real artefacts\, and finally get their pencils out for some creative worksheet fun! \n\n\n\nThis session is a repeat and updated session from 2024 focus day\, ”Rolling with the Romans was very interactive and child friendly.‘‘ \n\n\n\n11.30am – 12noon – Hadrian’s Wall – We have your back with Helen and Mark from Binchester Roman Fort\, supported by Equistry re-enactment group. \n\n\n\nBinchester Roman Fort was built in County Durham around 75AD and was one of the largest Roman Forts in the whole of northern Britain. The Fort housed 2000 soldiers\, including a cavalry regiment of 600 horses. \n\n\n\nPrior to Hadrian’s Wall\, Binchester was a key element in the conquest and overall defence strategy of the northern frontier.  Once the Wall was established\, whilst not directly on Hadrian’s Wall itself\, it played a major support role to the Wall – it was crucial for communications\, troop movement and supply lines. \n\n\n\nBy watching several video clips of re-enactors\, you can learn about what life was like for the cavalry soldiers and auxiliary soldiers living at Binchester.  Find out about the roles they played in supporting Hadrian’s Wall and protecting Dere street\, the main road north from York towards Hadrian’s Wall and beyond. \n\n\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \n\n\n\nPlease note that this Virtual Hadrian’s Wall Day is open for multiple schools and/or home learners to book. We will instruct all participants to turn cameras and microphones off during the sessions. \n\n\n\n*Hadrian’s Wall Learning and Engagement Forum are a group of museum and heritage education and outreach professionals based on the sites found across Hadrian’s Wall.

SUMMARY:'The Idea of Decline: Make Rome Great Again?' An Online Course
DESCRIPTION:Registration for our next online course\, with Professor Bruce Gibson\, The Idea of Decline: Make Rome Great Again? is now open here:\n\n \n\nhttps://www.hellenicandromanlibrary.org/Events/Event-Registration/EventId/24\n\n \n\nWednesday 14\, 21\, 28 January\, 4\, 11 February\,  6-7.30pm (UK time)\nWatch the sessions live\, or catch up by watching the recordings later at your own convenience.\n\n \n\nThis online course looks at the idea of decline\, both in the ancient world and in later periods. Decline as a concept emerges as something which is deeply rooted and even something which is paradoxically appealing and convenient as an idea\, often exploited by those seeking to advance political or social agendas.\n\n \n\nSession 1 – 14 January:\nIntroduction: Ancient Perspectives on Political Decline\n\n \n\nThis session briefly introduces the idea of decline as something whose resonances continue to echo right down to the present day. The main focus of the session will be on ancient approaches to political decline. Authors considered during the session will include Herodotus\, Xenophon\, Polybius and Tacitus.\n\n \n\nSession 2 – 21 January:\nDecline and Moral Criticism: Writing Decline\n\n \n\nThe second session will turn to ideas of moral decline in the ancient world. Moral decline is sometimes simply observed\, but on occasions it is an idea that can be exploited for other purposes. Authors who will be considered during this session include Hesiod\, Thucydides\, Sallust and Lucan.\n\n \n\nSession 3 – 28 January:\nLooking at the fall of the Roman empire\n\n \n\nThis session will look at ancient responses to events of the fourth and fifth centuries that are often referred to as the fall of the Roman empire. The main focus will be on seeing the representation of change and decline.\n\n \n\nSession 4 – 4 February:\nThe irresistible lure of decline\n\n \n\nThis session turns to the reception of ancient decline in later periods and will include consideration of Gibbon’s highly influential approach to the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.\n\n \n\nSession 5 – 11 February:\nThe rhetoric of decline in contemporary society\n\n \n\nThe final session of the course looks at the resonance of decline as a concept in current political and social discourse. Ancient decline is frequently evoked and exploited in such contexts. More broadly\, the idea of decline can be a powerful rhetorical weapon which can be used to advance political agendas.

SUMMARY:The Ophiolite
DESCRIPTION:Theatro Technis and London Play Productions\n\n \n\nRun ends 22nd February\n\n \nMore information\n \n\nA new play by Philip de Voni set in Cyprus and England.\nDirected by Kerry Kyriacos Michael MBE\n\n \n\nWhen her beloved father dies\, young Penelope clings to the past while his widow pushes to move on. Like the Greek heroines defending sacred traditions of old\, she must decide where the battle lines are drawn. As the bereaved gather\, grief ignites a territorial war over the deceased\, which then engulfs the soul of the family itself. Ancient grudges fume\, primal bonds are torched and\, like molten rock surging through fault lines in the Earth’s crust\, the deepest injuries are finally forced into the open. Will conflict separate the family from its history and alienate bloodlines forever? In a house divided\, will love survive — and will anyone survive love?\n\n \n\nThis is a new contemporary play by Philip de Voni set in Cyprus and England. Directed by Kerry Kyriacos Michael MBE\, the Creative Director of London’s Theatro Technis\, and Olivier and UK Theatre Award-winner.\n\n \n\nThere will be a post-show discussion with members of the cast and creative teams on February 12.

SUMMARY:Classics for All FREE Online CPD: Running Classics Trips for Primary and Secondary Schools
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, 9th March 2026\n4–5pm\, Online\n \n\nRunning school trips both abroad and in the UK is an exciting enrichment opportunity for students\, and there is nothing quite like seeing places and artwork “live” that they have learnt about in books. I still remember the gasps of my students when they saw two statues in a museum in Greece that they had only seen a small\, black and white picture of in their textbook!\n\n \n\nHowever\, running and organising trips can feel quite over-whelming\, so hopefully this session will give ideas for trips\, reassurance\, and somewhere to start.\n\n \n\nAll details for the CPD can be found here\, along with the online signup form: https://www.canva.com/design/DAG-S449oVk/SJcdffJOR_ynAtP0ITOqIA/view?utm_content=DAG-S449oVk&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=uniquelinks&utlId=h7f7c7089ff

SUMMARY:Latin Day School: Cleopatra – An Egyptian Queen with George Sharpley
DESCRIPTION:CLEOPATRA at Roman Bath\, with George Sharpley Saturday 25th April 2026\, 10am-4pm\n\n\n\nNews of Caesar’s murder in 44 BC must have come as a shock to Cleopatra. He was the father of her toddler son and their host in Rome where they had been staying for nearly two years. They left Rome for Alexandria almost immediately. With them went Cleopatra’s young brother Ptolemy XIV\, another guest in Rome\, and Cleopatra’s joint ruler. Soon after reaching Egypt\, she had him murdered. \n\n\n\nAs aristocratic families go\, the Ptolemies are in a class of their own. They clung on to power for centuries\, skilfully employing incestuous marriages\, divorces and close-family murders. \n\n\n\nThe last―and not least―of the Ptolemies was Cleopatra. We’ll examine her time as queen of Egypt\, her family background\, and look at the literary evidence\, sifting the evidence for bias\, political hostility and sensationalism. A dull story it is not! \n\n\n\nhttps://www.romanbaths.co.uk/event/ancient-world-cleopatra-george-sharpley

SUMMARY:Policing the politicians: political control in democratic Athens\, a lecture by Chris Carey
DESCRIPTION:Dr Chris Carey\, Professor Emeritus of Greek at UCL\, will be giving a lecture at the school entitled “Policing the politicians: political control in democratic Athens”. Here is a summary of the talk from Dr Carey:\n\n \n\n“In Athens the ultimate power rested with the people. But for the daily business of the city from waging war to cleaning the streets Athens like any modern democracy had to hand power over to active politicians and administrators. The lecture will explore the ways in which the sovereign people ceded power while exercising control over those it chose to serve it.”\n\n \n\nA very timely topic\, with democratic politicians around the world assiduously attempting to extend the limits of their power.
