DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 6th March\, 2.45-4.30pm \nThis year the University of Liverpool Drama Society will be performing a new adaptation of Sophocles\, Oedipus Rex on the evenings of 6th-8th March (flyer attached). In association with the play\, there will be a workshop for Year 8 and 9 students on Wednesday 6th March\, from 2.45pm-4.30pm. There will be a short introductory talk about Greek tragedy by Dr Fiona Hobden from the Archaeology\, Classics & Egyptology at the University\, followed by an hour-long physical theatre workshop with the play’s director and members of the cast. No previous knowledge of Greek drama is required. \nThe cost is £3 per student\, payable when booking (please note that a responsible adult must accompany students throughout the workshop). \nTickets for the play itself are available on the door on the night\, and school groups are welcome at any of the performances: if bringing a group or for further information about the play\, please get in touch with Amy Coker in the first instance.

She is author of Rape and the Politics of Consent in Classical Athens and has recently translated a selection of Greek fiction for Penguin Classics. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. This exhibition will be the first ever held on these important cities at the British Museum\, and the first such major exhibition in London for almost 40 years. It is the result of close collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Naples and Pompeii\, will bring together over 250 fascinating objects\, both recent discoveries and celebrated finds from earlier excavations. Many of these objects have never before been seen outside Italy. The exhibition will have a unique focus\, looking at the Roman home and the people who lived in these ill-fated cities. \nNeil MacGregor\, director of the British Museum said “This will be a major exhibition for the British Museum in 2013\, made possible through collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Naples and Pompeii which has meant extremely generous loans of precious objects from their collections\, some that have never travelled before. I am delighted that Goldman Sachs is sponsoring this important exhibition and am extremely grateful to them for their support.” \n“It is a privilege to be partnering with the British Museum for this incredibly exciting exhibition\, which offers a fascinating insight into daily life at the heart of the Roman Empire”\, said Richard Gnodde\, Co Chief executive of Goldman Sachs International. “We recognize the importance of supporting cultural platforms such as this and we are delighted to offer our support to help bring this unique experience to London.” \nPompeii and Herculaneum\, two cities on the Bay of Naples in southern Italy\, were buried by a catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in just 24 hours in AD 79. This event ended the life of the cities but at the same time preserved them until rediscovery by archaeologists nearly 1700 years later. The excavation of these cities has given us unparallelled insight into Roman life. \nOwing to their different locations Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried in different ways and this has affected the preservation of materials at each site. Herculaneum was a small seaside town whereas Pompeii was the industrial hub of the region. Work continues at both sites and recent excavations at Herculaneum have uncovered beautiful and fascinating artefacts. These include treasures many of which will be displayed to the public for the first time\, such as finely sculpted marble reliefs\, intricately carved ivory panels and fascinating objects found in one of the main drains of the city. \nThe exhibition will give visitors a taste of the daily life of the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum\, from the bustling street to the family home. The domestic space is the essential context for people’s lives\, and allows us to get closer to the Romans themselves. This exhibition will explore the lives of individuals in Roman society\, not the classic figures of films and television\, such as emperors\, gladiators and legionaries\, but businessmen\, powerful women\, freed slaves and children. One stunning example of this material is a beautiful wall painting from Pompeii showing the baker Terentius Neo and his wife\, holding writing materials showing they are literate and cultured. Importantly their pose and presentation suggests they are equal partners\, in business and in life. \nThe emphasis on a domestic context also helps transform museum artefacts into everyday possessions. Six pieces of wooden furniture will be lent from Herculaneum in an unprecedented loan by the Archaeological Superintendency of Napels and Pompeii. These items were carbonized by the high temperatures of the ash that engulfed the city and are extremely rare finds that would not have survived at Pompeii – showing the importance of combining evidence from the two cities. The furniture includes a linen chest\, an inlaid stool and even a garden bench. Perhaps the most astonishing and moving piece is a baby’s crib that still rocks on its curved runners. \nThe exhibition will include casts from in and around Pompeii of some of the victims of the eruption. A family of two adults and their two children are huddled together\, just as in their last moments under the stairs of their villa. Ancient Market Day is a fete-style interactive day aimed at Years 9 and 10\, designed to allow pupils to explore aspects of the ancient world through a set of hands-on activities. If the weather is good\, the event will be held outside in Abercromby Square\, in the heart of the University campus. Stalls will cover topics including: mummification\, Roman clothing\, shopping in the ancient world\, archaeology & excavation\, ancient food & drink. This year we are also hoping to have a visit from a Roman soldier (TBC). No prior knowledge of the ancient world is required\, and the day will also encourage students to think about concepts like identity\, trade and communication. \nPlease note that this popular event fills up quickly\, so early booking is advised. \nPlaces are limited to 12 students per school plus teacher. The cost is £7 per student\, payable when booking.

DESCRIPTION:Theatro Technis presents “Women in Parliament”\, an adaptation of Aristophanes’ hilarious satire\, translated by George Theodorites and directed by George Eugeniou. Premiering on the 4th of June\, this biting show will be running for two weeks\, until the 15th of June. It forms part of a larger cycle of five plays presented at our venue to bring the work of this brilliant ancient Greek playwright into our present context. \nAristophanes’ original piece was written in the 4th century BC\, after Athens was ruined by the Peloponnesian war. It tells the story of Athenian women getting into Parliament disguised as men in order to take the next government’s leadership. The women introduce radical changes in Athenians’ lives by enacting new laws; free love and abolition of private property at the forefront. Aristophanes wanted to send a strong message to the political leaders of his days: enough with the war\, enough with testosterone running the country; let’s rather enjoy a little of loving and tender care. It may be time for us to do the same\, in this current climate of widespread austerity. \nThe particular strength of Aristophanes’ play lies in its stark contrasting of gender roles. He creates hyperbolic situations where women apply their domestic skills to political goals\, using house management capacities for the benefit of all. But even when dressed as men\, they never stop being thoroughly feminine and humane in their policies. Can we say the same of the “iron ladies” of our present times – Margaret Thatcher and Angela Merkel to name a few? \nBut obscure dark ages always reveal how ironic our lives can be. Here the best chances for a laugh are to be found\, as crude and genuine as life itself. Aristophanes maintains this dialectic comic spirit and makes it a real protagonist of his play. And that’s because his son\, Phiddy\, has a penchant for betting and isn’t so keen on working. At a loss\, Streps has an idea: Phiddy can go to Socrates’ Academy and learn how to talk himself out of trouble! Job done! What could possibly go wrong?  \n A bawdy\, slapstick\, vital exploration of what happens when ethics aren’t part of the equation in a world where money makes the rules. \nThe Meddlers Theatre Company describes itself as ‘dedicated to staging writing from across Europe that probes as well as entertains\, that meddles with established attitudes towards the status quo\, that makes sure that as a society we keep questioning the ways in which we choose to lead our lives’. \nAn elaborate resource pack for teachers has been developed by William Lyons\, playwright and a former Professor of Philosophy (his last position was at the Trinity College\, Dublin). SUMMARY:Pompeii Live\, and the Museum of Archaeology at Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:This is a one-off cinematic event run by the BM but screened through cinemas across the county\, so that people who can’t make it to London – or who can’t get tickets\, which is certainly proving increasingly difficult – can get an insider’s view of the exhibition\, with various experts on hand (Mary Beard\, Bettany Hughes etc etc). \nThere are actually two events: one on Tuesday June 18th @7pm for adults (appropriate for GCSE and A level students) and one on Wednesday June 19th @11am for KS2 students. Information\, including which cinemas are holding screenings\, is available through the BM here: \nhttp://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/exhibitions/pompeii_and_herculaneum/pompeii_live.aspx \nSome places have already sold out\, others have plenty of tickets left. \nThe Museum of Classical Archaeology in Cambridge will be collaborating with their local Cineworld\, bringing down some objects which they don’t normally have on display to the Tuesday showing\, and creating some teachers’s packs and other materials to take to the Wednesday one. Then all of this will be turned into a temporary exhibition in the Museum.
