SUMMARY:Summer School in Homer\, UCL
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth Summer School is being run by UCL in July. From their website… \n  \nMonday 17th July to Friday 21st July 2017 \n \nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching of Homeric language and literature. There will be four language classes each day as well as lectures\, between 10.30 and 16.30. The course is not residential. \nTeaching will be generally in groups of 15-20 people which\, as far as possible\, comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, but they should find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Classics in the London area and beyond. \n\nLanguage courses\n\nBeginners Greek: Frank Beetham\, Beginning Greek with Homer (An elementary course based on Odyssey 5)\, pp. 1-50.\nIntermediate Greek: Frank Beetham\, Beginning Greek with Homer (An elementary course based on Odyssey 5)\, pp. 41-110.\nAdvanced Greek 1: Iliad 24 \nClick here for Introduction to Linear B \n \n\nLiterature courses\n\nHomer from Translation – Homer’s Legacy.\nThemes: the gods and goddesses\, women\, heroism\, aristeia\, kleos\, the Homeric question\, Penelope\, Helen\, and Achilles and Hector. Reception of all the above themes in other modes of representation such as novelisations\, cinema\, modern poetry etc.\nTexts: Odyssey 4-12 and 18-22 and Iliad 6\, 18\, 22 and 24. \nThe Summer School in Homer caters for school and university students\, and for anyone else who wishes to learn Homeric Greek\, or to revive their knowledge of it. Potential participants will include: students with no prior knowledge of the language; pre-GCSE/GCSE and A-Level students; university students; mature applicants who wish to expand their knowledge of the Homeric epics. Our principal concern is to provide a thorough programme of language learning in a lively university environment. \nCalligraphy Workshop (Tuesday 18 – Friday 21 July 2017) \nWrite Homer like the Humanists – a Practical Course with Patricia Lovett MBE (professional scribe and illuminator) £20 supplement to cover tools and materials costs \nThe Humanists rediscovered the classics\, including Homer\, and developed what they considered to be an ‘antique’ writing style to suit the ancient texts. In fact the script was based on Carolingian Minuscule of the ninth century\, but with Renaissance twists. Learn how to write this script\, then write out a short section from Homer in Alexander Pope’s translation on calfskin vellum. \nAll tools and materials supplied\, along with exemplar worksheets to take home. Beginners welcome. \nThe plan: \nDay 1 \nIntroduction to Calligraphy\, nib angle\, stroke sequence\, letter-forms and writing minuscule letters \nDay 2 \nMajuscule letters – shape\, Square Capitals\, Renaissance Capitals \nDay 3 \nWriting with a small nib\, selection of text\, writing the text\, layout and design\, vellum and vellum preparation \nDay 4 \nWriting the text on vellum\, small exhibition at the end of the day \nProgramme\, Cost and Application form \n\nThe programme for the Summer School in Homer can be found here. Please note: this programme is still subject to change.\nThe cost of the Summer School is £110 and you can pay here. This includes all tuition\, but not accommodation or travel expenses.\n\nEnquiries: please email the Summer School. All completed application forms should be returned\, to be received no later than Monday 10th July 2017\, to: \n \nThe Director\, Dr Antony Makrinos\nThe Summer School in Homer\nc/o Department of Greek and Latin\nUniversity College London\nGower Street\nLondon\nWC1E 6BT \n\nEmail homersummerschool@ucl.ac.uk\nWatch an interview with Dr Antony Makrinos on the Summer School in Homer.\n\nBursaries \nWe are pleased to offer 4 bursaries of £100 (courtesy of the Classical Association) and 5 bursaries of £50 (courtesy of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies). For more information please contact Dr Antony Makrinos at a.makrinos@ucl.ac.uk by Monday 10 July 2017 at the latest. \nUseful information \n\nHow to find us\n\nUniversity College London’s Bloomsbury campus is located close to Euston station. A map of the campus and information on individual venues can be found here. \n\nWe are well served by public transport. Information on local bus and tube services can be found here.\nAccommodation\n\nThe Summer School is non-residential. However\, students who require somewhere to stay can (subject to availability) arrange accommodation in a University of London Hall of Residence. Details of prices\, availability and information on how to book can be found here. Additionally\, places may be available in a UCL Hall of Residence. SUMMARY:Sutton Trust Summer School in Classics and Ancient History
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the huge success of last year’s programme\, from Monday 7th – Friday 11th August 2017 The University of Warwick will once again be hosting the Sutton Trust Summer School in Classics and Ancient History. \nThe Sutton Trust Summer Schools are free\, subject-specific residential courses for Year 12/Lower Sixth (or S5 in Scotland or equivalent) students from UK state-maintained schools. The summer schools are designed to provide academically-able students from non-privileged backgrounds with the opportunity to experience life at a leading university. \nThe summer school programme on offer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at The University of Warwick promises an innovative and stimulating insight into the value of studying Classics and/or Ancient History at university.  We aim to inspire and develop a passion for the study of the Ancient World and its continuing relevance to the modern day. \nAs well as the opportunity to experience the ancient languages at the appropriate level (beginners included)\, participants will be exposed to ancient history\, philosophy\, literature\, art and architecture\, sexuality and gender studies\, mythology\, religion\, and ancient medicine\, thus illustrating the breadth of the discipline and its multi-faceted appeal.  Students will also discover the influence of the Classical Civilisations on even on the most modern visual media. Moreover\, the course will provide the opportunity to handle coins and artefacts from our departmental collections. \nIn this way\, we plan to offer an exciting introduction to Classics at university level for those who have a fundamental interest in the subject but have not had the opportunity to study it before; as well as push those who have studied Classics to go beyond the traditional school syllabus. \nNo previous knowledge/formal study of the ancient world required.  Students do NOT need to have studied Latin or Ancient Greek.\n \nThe programme is completely free of charge. The Sutton Trust and the university will meet all costs incurred by students\, including travel to and from the summer schools\, food and accommodation\, and all trips and activities. \nFor further information on the summer school\, including instructions on how to apply\, see the Warwick Summer School website: \nhttp://warwick.ac.uk/wstss  – or contact outreach@warwick.ac.uk (024 7657 3555). \nFor the report and photographs of last year’s summer school\, please feel free to visit the following webpage: \nhttp://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/research/outreach/suttontrustsummerschool/ \nApplications for the 2017 programme will close at 17.00 on Thursday\, 2nd March 2017.  All teacher verifications must subsequently be submitted by 17.00 on Thursday\, 9th March 2017. \nThe University will write to you directly by Friday\, 5th May to confirm the outcome of your application.

SUMMARY:Dr Bruno Currie to talk on the Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 27th September at 4.30 pm\, Dr Bruno Currie will be speaking on: \n‘When does Penelope recognise Odysseus?’ \nThe Odyssey finds a bloody climax in its 22nd book\, with the killing of the suitors. But it has another\, much quieter\, but equally significant climax in the scene in the following 23rd book\, when Penelope and Odysseus are finally reunited as husband and wife. But reunion for a couple estranged and beleaguered\, each in their own way\, for 20 or so years turns out not to be a simple matter. What is involved in this scene (of over 300 lines!)\, and why does Penelope take so long to ‘recognise’ Odysseus? \nDr Currie is Mason Monro Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Oriel College\, Oxford. Among his publications is Homer’s Allusive Art (2016). \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 25th September. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance. Adults should bring photo ID. \n

SUMMARY:When Classics meets Neuroscience
DESCRIPTION:‘Where Classics Meets Neuroscience.’ \nSt Gabriel’s School\, Newbury \nBaroness Greenfield is a world-renowned neuroscientist whose achievements read like a Who’s Who of how to succeed: she is a writer\, broadcaster\, and member of the House of Lords whose research has included work on Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. She has published extensively on the neuroscience of consciousness and her most recent book discusses the impact of technology on the brain. \nAs an academic\, she can count Senior Research Fellow at Lincoln College\, Oxford University and Professor of Synaptic Pharmacology\, Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh between 2005 and 2013\, director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain from 1998 to 2010\, and in September 2013\, she co-founded the biotech company Neuro-bio Ltd\, where she is Chief Executive Officer. In 1994\, she was the first woman to be invited to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture\, adding her name to a list that includes the likes of Michael Farraday\, David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins. \nSo why\, I can hear you asking\, has the Department of Classics invited her to St Gabriel’s? Well\, it just so happens that Baroness Greenfield\, a champion of women in science\, studied Mathematics\, Ancient history\, Latin and Greek at ‘A’ level. \nThis is a talk that should appeal to everyone: those studying Classics\, Psychology\, Science\, the Humanities… in fact\, anyone who is interested in how the brain works. \nThe date of the talk is Thursday 28 September at 7.00pm\, with refreshments and exhibition open from 6.15pm. If you would like to attend this talk\, do put the date in your diary\, and reserve your tickets from \nMarc Ives \nclassics@stgabriels.co.uk

SUMMARY:RSC: Tales From Ovid\, by Ted Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Swan Theatre \n\n\n4pm – 5:30pm \nA selection of Ted Hughes’ famous retelling of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, chosen by Gregory Doran\, and read by RSC actors past and present. Who was Proserpina? Or Phaeton? Or Niobe? What happened to Daedalus and Icarus? Why was Philomel turned into a nightingale\, or Actaeon into a stag\, or Daphne into an olive tree? Why did the King of the Gods transform himself into a Bull\, a Swan\, or a shower of gold? This performance will reveal all. Ovid was Shakespeare’s favourite classical poet\, and one of his greatest influences. Indeed a contemporary account suggests that “the witty soul of Ovid lives in mellifluous and honey-tongued Shakespeare”. \nTickets £20 adults/£15 concessions \nFURTHER INFORMATION \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:'Oracles - but what else? Delphi through the ages'\, a talk by Michael Scott
DESCRIPTION:Classical Society Lecture\, 6.30 p.m.\, Monday 9th October 2017\, The Cloisters \nOracles – but what else? Delphi through the ages.\nProfessor Michael Scott \nDelphi was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world; a spectacularly beautiful religious site perched precariously on the slopes of Mt Parnassus. A visit to Delphi still takes the breath away. The site of the famous oracle\, the city attracted visitors from all over the ancient world. As well as visiting to hear the wisdom of the oracle\, people flocked to the sanctuary to show off their riches and to boast about their victories in battle. \nMichael Scott is an Associate Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick\, author of several books on ancient Greek and Roman society (including one on Delphi)\, and has written and presented a range of documentaries for National Geographic\, History Channel\, ITV and the BBC. He has most recently been seen on television presenting Sicily: Wonder of the Mediterranean and Italy’s Invisible Cities (with Alexander Armstrong). Michael is an honorary citizen of Delphi\, and an outstanding and engaging lecturer; his talk will be suitable for anyone with an interest in the Classical world \nThe lecture will commence at 6.30 p.m. and will be followed at 7.30 p.m. by refreshments. Colleagues and pupils from local schools are welcome to attend. There is no charge for this event\, but to enable us to gauge numbers please e-mail Mr Shaun Hullis (shullis@stbenedicts.org.uk<mailto:shullis@stbenedicts.org.uk>) by Wednesday 4th October with a rough estimate of how many you would like to bring.

SUMMARY:'Medea' by By Jove Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION:11th-14th October \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/medea-tickets-37693725949 \n“Medea is the final instalment in By Jove’s season of violent women\, a triptych of plays exploring the narratives of women who commit acts of violence. Medea is a fitting finale – her controversial story has been the mythic template for monstrous women of the popular imagination for centuries. Themes of obsessive love\, desperation and motherhood will be tested in the intimate\, brand new space of The Gallery on The Corner in Tooting Bec. \nWith a raw\, contemporary text by Wendy Haines and an all-female cast\, By Jove will continue their signature provocative and original work adapting myth that challenges the assumptions we make about women and their actions. The production will star SJ Brady\, Sinead Costelloe and Rosa Whicker as Medea tries to communicate herself to a room of strangers. Abandoned by her husband for another woman and left with the prospect of destitution\, Medea drives herself to a shocking act of violence. \nTickets for Wednesday 11th 2pm preview performance here. \nThe bar will open 1 hour before the show (CASH ONLY). \nThere will be a post-show discussion on Thursday October 12th.”

SUMMARY:Bijan Omrani to talk on Caesar in Gaul
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 11th October at 4.30 pm\, Mr Bijan Omrani will be speaking on: \nThe conquest of Gaul: how Caesar changed Europe \nIn the 50s BC\, Julius Caesar conducted a blood-soaked sequence of campaigns against the tribes of ancient Gaul. On the pretext of curbing an imminent barbarian threat to the Roman Republic\, he subjugated the Celtic peoples who occupied the territory of what is now France. Caesar laid Gallic civilisation to waste\, but within half a century of the conquest the Romans had begun to remake Gaul in their own image. Mr Omrani’s talk looks not only at what drew the Romans to invade\, but how they changed Gaul over 500 years of occupation\, and laid the foundations for the modern European civilisation to come. \nMr Omrani has taught classics at Eton and Westminster\, and is the author of several books. He read Classics and English at Lincoln College\, Oxford\, before going on to write and research on the history of Afghanistan\, the Silk Road and Central Asia\, as well as Roman history and the development of Greek thought. His latest book is Caesar’s Footprints: Journeys to Roman Gaul (2017). \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 9th October. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance. \n
