SUMMARY:Supporting Classics Teaching at Key Stages 3\, 4\, and 5 in Birmingham and the West Midlands
DESCRIPTION:A Classics for All event… \nSupporting Classics Teaching at Key Stages 3\, 4\, and 5\n\nA free information session for headteachers\, academy executives\, heads of department\, and any teachers from state schools in the region. \n10am-2pm on Saturday 9th June at the University of Birmingham \nThis is an exciting time for Classics in schools\, with the teaching of Ancient History\, Classical Civilisation\, and Latin in resurgence across the state sector. Join us in June to explore how the Birmingham and West Midlands Schools Classics Hub can support the development of Classics teaching in your school. \nWe will cover: \n\nWays to develop existing Classics provision;\nHow to get new courses up and running;\nHow to develop new provision: from after-school clubs to timetabled lessons;\nHow ancient languages can be introduced as part of English\, MFL\, or literacy lessons;\nHow Classics can be embedded across the curriculum\, through History\, English\, Drama\, RE\, Science\, PSHE\, etc.;\nHow to access Classics for All funding and training opportunities;\nHow to access post-training support.\n\nThe hub works in partnership with Classics for All (CfA)\, a national charity whose funds are available to state schools to introduce or enhance Classics provision. CfA can support access to teacher training and the cost of cover\, as well as CPD training and mentoring. With CfA support\, non-specialists can quickly get additional subjects such as Latin up and running\, whether as after-school enrichment clubs or on timetable across key stages 3\, 4\, and 5. \nIn addition to funds\, schools can access support from the hub in terms of teacher mentoring and ongoing subject support\, as well as student enrichment. The hub’s links to the University of Birmingham mean hub member schools have access to a wealth of Classics activities for students. These include guest lectures from prominent Classicists\, subject knowledge enhancement lectures and workshops\, exam preparation conferences\, and extra-curricular enrichment\, such as archaeology handling sessions. \nIf you would like any further information\, or to register for the event\, please email the Hub Co-ordinator\, Polly Stoker: p.stoker@bham.ac.uk \nPlease register by 2nd June.

SUMMARY:The Oxford Latinitas Project: Seminar on Humanitas
DESCRIPTION:The Oxford Latinitas Project promotes the fluent speaking of Classical Latin as an essential part of scholarship (and love) of the Litterae Humaniores. \nOn Friday 18th May the project will host visitors from the Accademia “Vivarium Novum”\, Italy\, for a seminar discussion of classic texts on the theme of ‘humanitas’\, accompanied by musical settings of ancient poetry. Refreshments will be served\, and thereafter those who wish may join us for dinner in the city centre. \nThe entire evening will be conducted in Latin. Active participation is of course encouraged\, but those who simply wish to observe and listen are also most welcome! It will be an excellent opportunity to get a taste for this exciting way of approaching the classical works and the languages they were written in as living things.

SUMMARY:Daughters of Antigone
DESCRIPTION:OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL GDST\nDepartment of Classics\nProf Barbara Goff\, Daughters of Antigone \n  March 19\, 2018 at 4.30 pm \nProfessor Barbara Goff\, a specialist in ancient Drama and its reception and a senior member of the Classics Department at Reading University\, will be speaking on ‘Daughters of Antigone’. \nSophocles’ Antigone is one of the most powerful political plays of antiquity and\, perhaps\, one that has been more often adapted and rewritten than any other classical tragedy. It is also widely studied by pupils preparing for Classical Greek\, Classical Civilization or Ancient History GCSE and A Level examinations. \nProfessor Goff’s talk will introduce a few important modern adaptations of Antigone to see what kind of an impact the Greek heroine has had over time.  Whether French\, African or Syrian\, what ideals does Antigone hold out for? Do the new versions make reference to the Greek play\, or is Antigone now completely separate from her ancient roots? \nThe talk will be followed by a Question and Answer session on “Classics at University”. During this session\, Professor Goff will answer student questions about the study of Classics and Classical reception at University in general\, but also about specific degree programmes at Reading University in particular. \nThe talk will be of direct relevance to anyone studying a Classical subject at GCSE or A Level (year 10-13 students) and\, of course\, to anyone interested in Classics and/or classical reception. \nThere is no charge for this event. Students under 16 should be accompanied by their teacher but sixth formers are welcome to join us independently. To book your place please email Dr Niki Karapanagioti at n.karapanagioti@oxf.gdst.net with a list of names as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 5th March. \nThe event will start at 4.30pm and will finish between 5.30pm and 6.00pm. \n  \nThe address of the school is Oxford High School GDST\, Belbroughton Road\, Oxford OX2 6XA; main telephone 01865 559888. \nWe are a city centre site\, so there is limited parking on site. It is possible to park on Belbroughton Road or use public transport. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to OHS!

SUMMARY:Professor Edith Hall on Homer\, Sappho and Aesop
DESCRIPTION:2017-18 Free Public Classics Lectures \nProfessor Edith Hall on Homer\, Sappho and Aesop \n  \nGresham College\, London’s oldest Higher Education Institution\, is delighted to announce a series by Visiting Professor in Classics Edith Hall. \nFew academic subjects have influenced the history of the world as much as ancient Greek history and culture\, yet today few people enjoy opportunities to study this important area. This series of lectures by Professor Edith Hall (King’s College London) will cover ancient Greek history by means of looking at depictions of key events and themes in film\, opera and the arts \n1)     Homer’s Iliad via the MovieTroy (2004) Thursday 23 November 2017 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall \nHomer’s Iliad\, the earliest Greek poem\, narrates the archetypal war between ‘Europeans’ and ‘Asiatics’ divided by the Hellespont. Beginning with Wolfgang Peterson’s blockbuster Troy (2004)\, the lecture describes the genesis of the Iliad  between the Mycenaean Late Bronze Age and the 8th century\, when it was first written down with the aid of the new\, phonetic script adapted from the Phoenician civilisation of the Levant. It explores the poem’s plot\, tragic perspective on the human condition\, and the despair caused by untimely death on an immense scale. \n2)     The Age of Tyrants: Sappho via Gounod’s Opera 18 January 2018 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall \nThe heroine of Charles Gounod’s French opera Sapho (1851) sings her last aria O My Immortal Lyre on a Greek cliff before plunging to her death. Sappho\, the most famous poet of the ‘Lyric Age’ of Greece\, in the 7th to 6th centuries BC\, addressed passionate love poems to women. This lecture uncovers what we know about the ‘real Sappho’\, an aristocrat who lived between 630 and 570 BCE on the island of Lesbos and socialised in the lavish courts of parvenu tyrants. But this historical context in no way diminishes her songs’ astonishing immediacy and erotic power. \n1)     Slave Stories: Aesop and Walter Crane Thursday 8 March 2018 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall \nIn 1887 the influential arts-and-crafts book illustrator Walter Crane published The Baby’s Own Aesop\, bringing the homespun wisdom of ancient Greek peasants to a new generation of children. This lecture uses these fables to tackle the least attractive feature of ancient Greece – institutionalised slavery. Beneath the semi-legendary figure of Aesop himself\, a barbarian sold to a Greek slave-owner in the 6th century BCE\, lie tens of thousands of his real-life equivalents. The lecture asks how the ancient fables address power relations in a slave society. Were they primarily stories for and by slaves\, or did they serve ruling-class interests? \nNotes to Editors: further information and photographs from Lucia Graves in the press office: 020 7831 0575 or l.graves@gresham.ac.uk.   \n1)     About Professor Edith Hall \nHall is Professor in the Classics Department and Centre for Hellenic Studies at King’s College London. Her specialism is ancient Greek literature\, but she enjoys putting the pleasure as well as the rigour into all aspects of ancient Greek and Roman history\, society\, and thought. \nShe has published more than twenty books\, broadcasts frequently on radio and television\, works as consultant with professional theatres\, lectures all over the world\, and publishes widely in academic and mainstream journals and newspapers. She is a world leader in the study of ethnicity\, class and gender in ancient sources\, of ancient theatre\, and of the continuing instrumentality of ancient ideas–especially those of Arisotle–in world culture since the Renaissance. \nShe has held posts at Cambridge\, Oxford\, Durham\, Reading and Royal Holloway\, and visiting positions at Notre Dame\, Swarthmore\, Northwestern\, Leiden\, and Erfurt. \n2)     About Gresham College \nThe College fills lecture halls for its four or so free public lectures every week amounting to around 130 a year. All Gresham lectures are made available online after the event. \nA series of six lectures a year is delivered by each of our ten Professors. These are augmented by a number of Visiting Professors and as many as 40 individual lectures from a range of illustrious speakers selected from the worlds of academia\, politics and industry. \nGresham College is an independent institution funded from the estate of our founder\, Sir Thomas Gresham. After his death in 1579\, Sir Thomas’ estate and control of his benefaction was left to the City of London Corporation and the Worshipful Company of Mercers\, which operate through the Joint Grand Gresham Committee to support the College. \n

SUMMARY:GCSE and A Level Classical Civilisation conference: Bristol Classics Hub
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the success of our inaugural GCSE and A Level Classical Civilisation conference last year\, we will be holding this event again on Thursday 8th March 2018 in the Wills Memorial Building at the University of Bristol. \nTopics for sessions will align closely to the new OCR specifications and therefore the event will be most directly relevant to students studying Classical Civilisation at GCSE or A Level. However\, students studying Latin\, Ancient Greek or Ancient History are very welcome to attend as well\, as are those who are not yet studying any classical subjects but may wish to do so at university. \nThanks to better room availability\, we can run separate sessions this year for GCSE and A Level students (as opposed to the joint sessions in 2017). \nThe event will run from 9.30am – 2.45pm and is free to attend. Drinks and snacks will be provided but students will need to bring a packed lunch. \nFull details of the GCSE and A Level programmes can be viewed here: 2018 Classical Civilisation conference programme (PDF\, 529kB)‌ \nSpaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis. To reserve places for your students\, please email h.walsh@bristol.ac.uk or sign-up online here. \n
