SUMMARY:Dr Bruno Currie to talk on the Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 27th September at 4.30 pm\, Dr Bruno Currie will be speaking on: \n‘When does Penelope recognise Odysseus?’ \nThe Odyssey finds a bloody climax in its 22nd book\, with the killing of the suitors. But it has another\, much quieter\, but equally significant climax in the scene in the following 23rd book\, when Penelope and Odysseus are finally reunited as husband and wife. But reunion for a couple estranged and beleaguered\, each in their own way\, for 20 or so years turns out not to be a simple matter. What is involved in this scene (of over 300 lines!)\, and why does Penelope take so long to ‘recognise’ Odysseus? \nDr Currie is Mason Monro Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Oriel College\, Oxford. Among his publications is Homer’s Allusive Art (2016). \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 25th September. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance. Adults should bring photo ID. \n

SUMMARY:When Classics meets Neuroscience
DESCRIPTION:‘Where Classics Meets Neuroscience.’ \nSt Gabriel’s School\, Newbury \nBaroness Greenfield is a world-renowned neuroscientist whose achievements read like a Who’s Who of how to succeed: she is a writer\, broadcaster\, and member of the House of Lords whose research has included work on Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. She has published extensively on the neuroscience of consciousness and her most recent book discusses the impact of technology on the brain. \nAs an academic\, she can count Senior Research Fellow at Lincoln College\, Oxford University and Professor of Synaptic Pharmacology\, Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh between 2005 and 2013\, director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain from 1998 to 2010\, and in September 2013\, she co-founded the biotech company Neuro-bio Ltd\, where she is Chief Executive Officer. In 1994\, she was the first woman to be invited to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture\, adding her name to a list that includes the likes of Michael Farraday\, David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins. \nSo why\, I can hear you asking\, has the Department of Classics invited her to St Gabriel’s? Well\, it just so happens that Baroness Greenfield\, a champion of women in science\, studied Mathematics\, Ancient history\, Latin and Greek at ‘A’ level. \nThis is a talk that should appeal to everyone: those studying Classics\, Psychology\, Science\, the Humanities… in fact\, anyone who is interested in how the brain works. \nThe date of the talk is Thursday 28 September at 7.00pm\, with refreshments and exhibition open from 6.15pm. If you would like to attend this talk\, do put the date in your diary\, and reserve your tickets from \nMarc Ives \nclassics@stgabriels.co.uk

SUMMARY:RSC: Tales From Ovid\, by Ted Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Swan Theatre \n\n\n4pm – 5:30pm \nA selection of Ted Hughes’ famous retelling of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, chosen by Gregory Doran\, and read by RSC actors past and present. Who was Proserpina? Or Phaeton? Or Niobe? What happened to Daedalus and Icarus? Why was Philomel turned into a nightingale\, or Actaeon into a stag\, or Daphne into an olive tree? Why did the King of the Gods transform himself into a Bull\, a Swan\, or a shower of gold? This performance will reveal all. Ovid was Shakespeare’s favourite classical poet\, and one of his greatest influences. Indeed a contemporary account suggests that “the witty soul of Ovid lives in mellifluous and honey-tongued Shakespeare”. \nTickets £20 adults/£15 concessions \nFURTHER INFORMATION \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:'Oracles - but what else? Delphi through the ages'\, a talk by Michael Scott
DESCRIPTION:Classical Society Lecture\, 6.30 p.m.\, Monday 9th October 2017\, The Cloisters \nOracles – but what else? Delphi through the ages.\nProfessor Michael Scott \nDelphi was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world; a spectacularly beautiful religious site perched precariously on the slopes of Mt Parnassus. A visit to Delphi still takes the breath away. The site of the famous oracle\, the city attracted visitors from all over the ancient world. As well as visiting to hear the wisdom of the oracle\, people flocked to the sanctuary to show off their riches and to boast about their victories in battle. \nMichael Scott is an Associate Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick\, author of several books on ancient Greek and Roman society (including one on Delphi)\, and has written and presented a range of documentaries for National Geographic\, History Channel\, ITV and the BBC. He has most recently been seen on television presenting Sicily: Wonder of the Mediterranean and Italy’s Invisible Cities (with Alexander Armstrong). Michael is an honorary citizen of Delphi\, and an outstanding and engaging lecturer; his talk will be suitable for anyone with an interest in the Classical world \nThe lecture will commence at 6.30 p.m. and will be followed at 7.30 p.m. by refreshments. Colleagues and pupils from local schools are welcome to attend. There is no charge for this event\, but to enable us to gauge numbers please e-mail Mr Shaun Hullis (shullis@stbenedicts.org.uk<mailto:shullis@stbenedicts.org.uk>) by Wednesday 4th October with a rough estimate of how many you would like to bring.

SUMMARY:'Medea' by By Jove Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION:11th-14th October \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/medea-tickets-37693725949 \n“Medea is the final instalment in By Jove’s season of violent women\, a triptych of plays exploring the narratives of women who commit acts of violence. Medea is a fitting finale – her controversial story has been the mythic template for monstrous women of the popular imagination for centuries. Themes of obsessive love\, desperation and motherhood will be tested in the intimate\, brand new space of The Gallery on The Corner in Tooting Bec. \nWith a raw\, contemporary text by Wendy Haines and an all-female cast\, By Jove will continue their signature provocative and original work adapting myth that challenges the assumptions we make about women and their actions. The production will star SJ Brady\, Sinead Costelloe and Rosa Whicker as Medea tries to communicate herself to a room of strangers. Abandoned by her husband for another woman and left with the prospect of destitution\, Medea drives herself to a shocking act of violence. \nTickets for Wednesday 11th 2pm preview performance here. \nThe bar will open 1 hour before the show (CASH ONLY). \nThere will be a post-show discussion on Thursday October 12th.”

SUMMARY:Bijan Omrani to talk on Caesar in Gaul
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 11th October at 4.30 pm\, Mr Bijan Omrani will be speaking on: \nThe conquest of Gaul: how Caesar changed Europe \nIn the 50s BC\, Julius Caesar conducted a blood-soaked sequence of campaigns against the tribes of ancient Gaul. On the pretext of curbing an imminent barbarian threat to the Roman Republic\, he subjugated the Celtic peoples who occupied the territory of what is now France. Caesar laid Gallic civilisation to waste\, but within half a century of the conquest the Romans had begun to remake Gaul in their own image. Mr Omrani’s talk looks not only at what drew the Romans to invade\, but how they changed Gaul over 500 years of occupation\, and laid the foundations for the modern European civilisation to come. \nMr Omrani has taught classics at Eton and Westminster\, and is the author of several books. He read Classics and English at Lincoln College\, Oxford\, before going on to write and research on the history of Afghanistan\, the Silk Road and Central Asia\, as well as Roman history and the development of Greek thought. His latest book is Caesar’s Footprints: Journeys to Roman Gaul (2017). \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 9th October. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance. \n

SUMMARY:Bacchae at the Oxford Playhouse\, this October
DESCRIPTION:“The god Dionysos has come to the city of Thebes\, where Pentheus rules with cool composure. The young king seeks to ban all worship of his cousin Dionysos\, whom he insists is a fake divinity. Little does he know: the god is watching his every move. Dionysos turns the women of the city mad\, and plays cat and mouse with Pentheus. Things are about to change. \nEuripides’ Bacchae\, performed and translated ceaselessly since its first production in the 5th century BCE\, tells a story of divine revenge. This version\, performed in the original Ancient Greek (with English subtitles) explores the boundaries between masculine and feminine\, individual and community\, human and divine.” \nFURTHER INFORMATION \n

SUMMARY:Latin and Greek language training: A free 1.5 day course for secondary teachers
DESCRIPTION:  \nLatin and Greek language training\nA free 1.5 day course for secondary teachers \n2.00 – 5.00pm on Friday 20th October\n9.00am – 5.00pm on Saturday 21st October \nHosted by Harrow School \nClassics for All\, a national charity which works to widen access to classical subjects\, is delighted to be working in partnership with Harrow School to support the teaching and learning of Classics. \nBy offering funding and support\, Classics for All helps UK state primary and secondary schools to introduce or develop the teaching of classical subjects (Latin\, Ancient Greek\, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History) using flexible and innovative curricular or extra-curricular models. \nAs a result of our Harrow partnership\, we are able to offer secondary teachers the opportunity to benefit from free language training in Latin or Greek. This new CPD course will run at the start of the October 2017 half-term and there will be separate groups for Greek (beginners) and Latin (beginners and intermediate). \nThe training course is open to all teachers in state secondary schools in England or Wales. Whether you are interested in introducing Latin or Ancient Greek into your school for the first time\, or whether you would like to consolidate your own linguistic understanding to support what you currently teach\, we hope that this course will prove invaluable. \n \n  \nCourse content \nWe will provide tuition for both Greek and Latin\, subject to demand. \nWe anticipate that the Greek class will be aimed at those who are new to teaching Greek. Prior knowledge of the alphabet will be expected but the course will focus on the basic elements of grammar. The main course text used will be John Taylor’s Greek to GCSE Part 1. \nTwo groups will be offered for Latin. The beginners’ group will be open to those who are new to Latin and will roughly cover the content of the Cambridge Latin Course Book 1. The intermediate group will be aimed at those who already have a basic knowledge of the Latin grammar covered in Book 1 of the Cambridge Latin Course. The course will focus on new grammar points introduced in Books 2-3 and there may also be time to discuss approaches to studying literature set texts at GCSE. \nHaving said this\, we are keen to ensure that these courses are as beneficial as possible to those who attend and therefore we will tailor the exact structure and content of each class in response to need. The details above are just intended as a guide so we would appreciate it if you could provide us with as much detail as possible about your own training needs when filling in the online survey: http://bit.ly/languageCPD. \nThe sessions will be led by a subject specialist from Harrow School and by experienced trainers from Classics for All. Group sizes will be kept small to allow for maximum progress. \n  \nPractical details \nDay 1: Friday 20th October \n\nSmall group language tuition from 2-5pm\nDinner (optional\, for those staying in the area)\n\nDay 2: Saturday 21st October \n\nSmall group language tuition from 9am – 5pm\nLunch and refreshments provided\n\nHarrow School can provide accommodation on Friday night for a small number of teachers who may need to travel to the course from outside London. This accommodation will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis so do get in touch ASAP if you would like to reserve a room. \nIf you are coming by car\, parking is available on site on Garlands Lane (HA1 3GF). The nearest London Underground and mainline train station is Harrow on the Hill (Metropolitan and Chiltern lines). From the station\, it is a 10 minute walk uphill to the school. Full details and a map of the school site can be found here: http://www.harrowschool.org.uk/Visitor-Information \nLunch and refreshments will be provided on Saturday 21st October. There will also be the option to stay for dinner on Friday 20th October. This course is free to attend. However\, Classics for All will not be able to cover travel costs. We hope that teachers will be able to claim back any expenses from school but please do let us know if this is going to cause any difficulties. \n  \nWhat next? \nTo register your interest for this free CPD course\, please sign up online at or email hannah@classicsforall.og.uk even if you would just like to know a little more at this stage.

SUMMARY:Women in the Aeneid
DESCRIPTION:Roman Baths\n \nVirgil’s great epic presents a rich variety of female characters. Are doom-laden characters like Dido and Camilla a reminder of what happens if women step beyond cultural norms and expectations? Meet the wives\, lovers\, mothers\, queens\, goddesses\, furies and more. They are brave\, independent\, loving\, loyal\, manipulative\, morally courageous\, ruthless\, violent and vulnerable. We look at what these women bring to the story\, and consider the wider picture of women within ancient Roman society. This course is not for complete beginners to Latin: you will read and hear lines from the poem. Longer passages will be read in translation. \nFurther Information
