SUMMARY:Reading Ancient Philosophy: Cicero - evening class
DESCRIPTION:This is a 7 week course by Lisa Eberle \nMondays\, 6 – 7pm – starting April 20th at the East Oxford Community Classics Centre \nWhat is the best way to live? What obligations towards other human beings does it entail? And how should answers to these questions inform how we act every day? These are the questions that Cicero addresses in On Duties\, and for centuries his answers have influenced the thinking of eminent philosophers\, including Kant and Montesquieu. \nBut On Duties is not simply a treatise concerned with a fundamental philosophical problem. Cicero wrote the work between the assassination of Julius Caesar in March of 44 BC and his own public execution nine months later. He addressed and dedicated his account of the best way to live to his son and intended it as a guide for elite Romans more generally. Following his precepts\, Cicero thought\, might be able to save the Republic that he saw disintegrating before his own eyes. \nAs a result\, reading Cicero’s On Duties\, which this seven-week course sets out to do\, not only entails analysing and probing his philosophical arguments in the abstract\, but also examining their relationship to the history and politics of Late Republican Rome\, the concrete context in which Cicero was making them. \nEach week we will focus on an assigned section of On Duties i (15-25 pages each week) that you will be asked to read in translation in preparation for the class. The main goal of the class is to discuss and figure out together what Cicero is saying in the respective sections. You will also be introduced to what other scholars have made of Cicero’s arguments and how they fit within ancient philosophy more generally. \nTo book\, please email info@irisproject.org.uk \nFor more information and courses\, please visit our website at www.eoccc.org.uk \n

SUMMARY:Dr Stephen Heyworth will be giving a talk on 'Aeneas the Villain' at Sherborne Girls\, Dorset\, Monday 23 March
DESCRIPTION:Monday 23 March at 5pm \nThe talk on ‘Aeneas the Villain’ begins by acknowledging that Aeneas is a hero\, but tries to bring out the way in which Virgil has written his epic so that an attentive reader is enabled and at some points compelled to see the poem’s protagonist as socially inept\, emotionally stunted\, morally questionable\, deceitful\, conniving\, nasty; in short\, a villain.  He considers Aeneas the lover\, the family man\, the teller of tales\, the betrayer of Troy\, the wager of war. \nStephen Heyworth has been Bowra Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Wadham College since 1988; throughout this period he has taught textual criticism and Latin palaeography to undergraduates and Masters students as well as giving lectures and classes on Latin literature (especially poetry of the first century BC). Together with his Wadham colleague\, James Morwood\, he has published a commentary for students on Propertius 3 (Oxford\, 2011). His current work concentrates on the text\, manuscript tradition and contexts of Ovid’s Fasti and will lead to a commentary on Book 3 (CUP). \nAttendance is free. \nPlease contact Rachel Allen on rma@sherborne.com if you would like to come. \n

SUMMARY:Nicholas Denyer to speak on 'The Origins of Justice'
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 23rd March at 4.30 pm\, Mr Nicholas Denyer will be speaking on: \n‘The Origins of Justice’ \nWhy be just? Why be nice to other people? One obvious answer is that you will be punished if you aren’t. But the obvious answer raises new questions. For example\, why be nice if you won’t get caught? The thinkers of classical Greece had a plausible\, and unsettling\, answer to all these questions. In this talk\, Mr Denyer will be looking at that answer\, exploring problems from the classic Prisoners’ Dilemma to the response of the island of Melos to Athenian aggression. \nMr Denyer is Fellow and College Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Trinity College\, Cambridge. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with expected numbers as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 20th March. \n

SUMMARY:Museum within a School\, evening reception 13th March\, 6 - 8pm\, Cheney School
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be holding a drinks reception at the East Oxford Community Classics Centre at Cheney School on Friday 13th March\, 6 – 8pm\, to launch our artefact collection and wider project to create a museum at the classics centre. The event will enable visitors to see and handle some items in our collection\, view sketches for forthcoming artefact story trail murals\, which will be painted across the school campus\, and speak to archaeologists and project leaders. Drinks and Roman-inspired refreshments will be available! \nIf you would like to attend for some or all of the evening\, please email info@irisproject.org.uk \nThe centre is privileged to own a wide range of items\, ranging from mesolithic tools (dating 8000 – 4000 BC)\, a large number of Roman glass and pottery fragments\, tesserae\, roof tiles and a catapult shot – these have been donated to us by museums\, individuals and universities. In the past few months an archaeologist has been working with us to create a comprehensive digital database of these items\, which we now host online\, so visitors\, students and many others can view the items and understand more about them. \nA group of Cheney School students has been involved in the process of categorising the items and entering them into the database. We are training a group of students every year in the artefacts collection database and handling – these students will then become “student curators” for the collection during their time at the school. \nWe are also creating artefact story trails\, which will appear in various parts of the school – consisting of murals showing how the artefacts were made\, how they were used and how they were discovered\, and featuring the artefacts themselves. Each mural will extend along a school corridor encompassing a series of detailed vignettes. These trails will be a way of immersing visitors and students in the history of these fascinating items. \nAlongside this\, we are developing workshops involving the artefacts which will be embedded into the “What Is History” module studied by all year 7s at Cheney School. These workshops will also be delivered to students and other visitors from the wider community. Through his work at the centre\, we aim to make the artefacts collection a vital\, accessible and exciting aspect of the centre that Cheney School students and the community at large will learn about and benefit from. \nUnderstanding Museums Exhibition \nWe are also delighted to announce a forthcoming exhibition to be hosted at the EOCCC\, which is the culmination of a project called ‘Understanding Museums: Deaf\, visually impaired and ethnic minority groups’\, which has been generously funded by Oxford University’s Communicating Ancient Greece and Rome programme (an AHRC funded programme)\, with additional funding from the Arts Council England (ACE) and Classical Association (CA). \nThe exhibition looks at how to make museum collections (specifically Classical collections) more accessible to Deaf\, visually impaired and ethnic minority groups\, based upon the findings of group discussions that took place in September 2014 in London and Birmingham. The exhibition will consist of clay bowls and objects made by the ethnic minority focus group\, which explored ways in which the Roman Empire could be better understood by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. A wall hanging and video providing an overview of the project\, as well as video clips showing the thoughts and comments of the project’s participants will also be on display. \nAs part of our work on developing the museum at the Classics Centre\, we are exploring ways to make our collections as accessible and widely-used as possible\, and Maria’s exhibition and project work is an example of how collections can reach out to wider audiences. \nA website for the exhibition can be found at http://www.understandingmuseums.com \nFor more information about the East Oxford Community Classics Centre\, please visit www.eoccc.org.uk \n

SUMMARY:Come\, See\, Be Inspired: Experience Classics at Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Classics – the study of ancient Greece and Rome\, of Latin and Greek\, and of the tremendously rich ‘afterlife’ of the ancient world in Western History and Culture – is for everyone! We want to share our enthusiasm in a new initiative addressed to teachers and pupils in Key Stages 3–5: come visit us at Cambridge and experience both Cambridge and Classics hands-on! You do not currently need to study Classical Civilization\, Ancient History\, or the ancient languages – an interest in doing so is enough! It is possible to learn \nGreek and Latin at Cambridge regardless of one’s A-level subjects. \nAn example programme for the day: \n(We can also accommodate later start and end times or half-day visits) Around 10:00:   Arrival at the Faculty \n10.00 – 10.30:    Welcome and settling in \n10.30 – 11.15:    Talk by a Cambridge academic on a Classical subject\, tailored to the age and background of the group \n11.15 – 11.30:    Break \n11.30 – 12.30:    Tour of the Museum of Classical Archaeology \n12.30 – 14:00:    Lunch in either the Faculty or one of the Colleges\, hosted \nby one of our ‘student ambassadors’\, fielding questions \nabout studying at Cambridge \n14:00 – 15:00:    Optional supervision-style class with a Cambridge academic \nThe initiative is addressed to schools in the maintained sector\, and we are pleased to be able to offer help with travel expenses and provide refreshments and lunch here in Cambridge free of charge. The places for each date are strictly limited\, so please be in touch early. If you are unable to make any of the dates\, we will try to find an alternative day for your visit. \n19th November 2014; 10th February\, 6th March\, 19th June\, 24th June 2015 \nWe hope the prospect of visiting the Faculty appeals to you. Please contact Jennie Thornber for further details at jlt39@cam.ac.uk or on (01223) 767044. \n  \n

SUMMARY:How to Build a Heroine: Evening talk at the EOCCC
DESCRIPTION:How to Build a Heroine \nAn evening talk by Dr Gail Trimble (Oxford) \n27 February at 6 – 7pm \nat the East Oxford Community Classics Centre (www.eoccc.org.uk) \nGreek and Roman literature is full of heroic women who have been badly treated by men\, and who take the stage to complain about and try to improve the circumstances in which they find themselves.  But what does it mean when a heroine with her own individual story expresses herself in words that have been spoken before by another woman in another myth?  This talk looks at two powerful and eloquent women from Latin poetry\, Ariadne in Catullus’ 64th poem and Dido in Virgil’s Aeneid\, to ask why ancient poets constructed their heroines in this way and why it matters that we notice. \nAll are welcome. Drinks included. \nFor further details and to book\, please email info@irisproject.org.uk

SUMMARY:Year 11 and Year 12 Philosophy Study Day - 17th February 2015
DESCRIPTION:On February 17th 2015 Corpus Christi and the University of Oxford Faculty of Classics will be holding a Philosophy Study Day\, aiming to introduce both Ancient and Modern Philosophy to Year 11 and Year 12 students. \nThe day will include introductory information to the subject\, two taster seminars\, lunch in the main dining hall\, a College tour with current students\, and in-depth information on the Oxford admissions process. The day is entirely free of charge. A poster advertising the event can be downloaded here. \nThe day will focus on the topic of ‘freedom’. The smoker wonders: did I act freely or am I addicted? The besotted lover: did I act freely or was I transported by passion? The criminal: did I act freely or was it social conditioning? The depressive: did I act freely or was I determined by brain chemistry? The fatalist: did I act freely or was it foreordained? You can be led to ask yourself about your freedom from many starting points. But how should you go about answering? In this Philosophy taster workshop\, participants will work with Oxford tutors to try to understand the nature of freedom\, and to see how contrasting ancient and contemporary concerns may nevertheless give rise to the same puzzles about it. They’ll also come to appreciate some of the different ways in which philosophers have attempted to solve those puzzles. \nIt is anticipated that there will be significant interest in this day\, so please fill in the application form  by January 9th. All applicants can expect a reply by January 16th. A key part of the process of deciding who will gain a place on the day will be through reading the personal statements provided. In no more than 300 words\, we would ask applicants to describe their interests (particular and general) in philosophy\, whether it is something they have previously studied formally or not; we would also be interested to know what applicants hope to gain from attending the event. \nFor application form please visit the Corpus Christi College website: http://www.ccc.ox.ac.uk/Philosophy-Study-Day

SUMMARY:The Last Days of Socrates\, Barbican Centre\, London
DESCRIPTION:News of a BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus show… \nThe Last Days of Socrates\, Friday 13 February 2015\, 7.30 at the Barbican Centre\, London\nBBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus \nhttp://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=15976 \nA cantata for chorus\, orchestra and bass soloist by contemporary Australian composer Brett Dean. \nClassicists who are keen to experience their subject in new contexts may be interested in this UK premiere.  Don’t expect pretty tunes – but the overall effect may be quite impressive.  The work is combined with a performance of Beethoven’s 8th Symphony. \nIt’s in English apart from the name Σωκράτης – which is sung both in Greek and English.  I have tried my best to get the chorus to pronounce the Greek version correctly! \nHilary Sillis (member of BBC Symphony Chorus)
