SUMMARY:Experiencing the Roman army: the Vindolanda writing tablets and Roman frontier culture
DESCRIPTION:   Wednesday 24th June 4.10pm Performing Arts \nShrewsbury High School \nExperiencing the Roman army: the Vindolanda writing tablets and Roman frontier culture \nDr John Pearce\, King’s College\, London \nThe writing tablets from the Roman fort at Vindolanda\, just south of Hadrian’s Wall\, are the most significant archaeological find from any Roman frontier in the last half century. They comprise ink documents with enormously diverse content\, from military memos to party invitations\, written by\, to and about the soldiers stationed there. The lives of these auxiliaries can thus be glimpsed in a way rarely possible for the Roman army. Drawing also on the results of digital imaging\, this talk will consider the insights the tablets give into the experience of soldiers on a frontier. In particular it will examine the ways in which men recruited in northern Gaul became ‘Romans’ during their military service and how far the culture of their homeland endured in this distant posting. \nAll welcome! Free! \nPlease email Jo Lashly on j.lashly@shr.gdst.net if you are interested in coming.

SUMMARY:Year 11 & 12 Classics and English Day at the Faculty of Classics\, University of Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the success of our Ancient and Modern Philosophy Day with Corpus Christi College at the start of the year\, the Faculty of Classics\, together with Oriel College and Regent’s Park College\, are proud to offer UK Year 11 and Year 12 students an introduction to studying Classics and English at university. The day (28th May) will include a taster seminar\, lunch in the main dining hall\, two college tours with current students\, and in-depth information on the Oxford admissions process. The day is entirely free of charge. \nIn the Classics and English taster seminar\, participants will explore the enduring influence of the family in tragedy and epic with Oxford tutors. Agamemnon sacrifices his daughter\, Iphigeneia\, in order to appease the gods\, an action that leads to his own death and his wife’s and torments his children’s futures. After ten years of war\, Odysseus endures perils and temptations as he travels to regain his home\, his wife and his son. Aeneas carries his father away from burning Troy and becomes the ‘founding father’ of Rome. Amata\, Lavinia’s mother\, is corrupted by Allecto to subvert the foundation legend. Eve eats the forbidden fruit\, condemning her husband Adam and the whole of humankind to mortality. Mary\, Eve’s ‘daughter’\, gives birth to Jesus who\, through his own sacrificial death\, will redeem humans and regain Paradise. \nTragic falls\, epic narratives: at the heart of these lies the story of the family\, its steadfastness\, its temptations\, its cruelties and its redemptive possibilities. Why are there differences in the way the family is depicted in Homeric\, Virgilian and Christian epic? Are women always to blame when things go wrong? What happens when patriarchy fails? Must tragedy always involve the family? Is redemption possible and can it all end well after all? All to be explored in our seminar! \nFor information on booking details please visit the Oriel College website: http://www.oriel.ox.ac.uk/content/classics-and-english-day \nDeadline: Please complete the booking form by 18 May 2015. We are expecting this to be a popular event\, so bookings will be accepted on a first come-first served basis. If you have any questions about the day\, please contact Mai Musie at mai.musie@classics.ox.ac.uk . \nFor further information about our cross-discipline days and the Faculty of Classics’ Outreach Programme please visit our website: http://www.classics.ox.ac.uk/Outreach.html

SUMMARY:An Evening with David Starkey: Magna Carta
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta\, one of the most famous historical documents in the world. Originally issued by King John as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215\, Magna Carta or ‘the Great Charter’ established for the first time the principle that everybody\, including the King\, was subject to the law. \nTo commemorate this landmark historical anniversary\, Edgbaston High School will be hosting an evening with David Starkey\, one of the country’s most respected and well-known historians and television personalities. Formerly a lecturer at the London School of Economics\, Starkey became a household name through his work as a broadcaster\, most notably as a uniquely abrasive debater on Radio 4’s Moral Maze and the creator and presenter of many very popular historical T.V. series on subjects such as Henry VIII\, Elizabeth I\, the British monarchy and the Churchills. \nHis most recent book entitled Magna Carta will be launched in April this year and he will be visiting school on Monday 18th May to deliver a stimulating and thought-provoking lecture on the document’s historical and contemporary relevance. The evening will begin at 7pm and will conclude at approximately 9.30pm. It will include a question and answer session with Mr. Starkey and a book signing. Light refreshments will also be served. \nTickets for the event cost £10 per person and can be purchased in person from Edgbaston High School for Girls. \nAlternatively\, you can buy tickets by post by sending a cheque made payable to ‘Edgbaston High School for Girls’ and a stamped\, addressed envelope to the following address: \nBenjamin Smith\,\nHead of History\,\nEdgbaston High School for Girls\,\nWestbourne Road\,\nEdgbaston\,\nBirmingham\,\nB15 3TS. \nTickets are limited and will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis so please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Special seating has been reserved for disabled guests so please notify us when booking if you or a member of your party has a disability. \nIf you have any queries or would like any further information please contact Mr. Benjamin Smith\, the Head of History by Telephone on: 0121 454 5831 or by e-mail at: smithb@edgbastonhigh.co.uk

SUMMARY:Reading Ancient Philosophy: Cicero - evening class
DESCRIPTION:This is a 7 week course by Lisa Eberle \nMondays\, 6 – 7pm – starting April 20th at the East Oxford Community Classics Centre \nWhat is the best way to live? What obligations towards other human beings does it entail? And how should answers to these questions inform how we act every day? These are the questions that Cicero addresses in On Duties\, and for centuries his answers have influenced the thinking of eminent philosophers\, including Kant and Montesquieu. \nBut On Duties is not simply a treatise concerned with a fundamental philosophical problem. Cicero wrote the work between the assassination of Julius Caesar in March of 44 BC and his own public execution nine months later. He addressed and dedicated his account of the best way to live to his son and intended it as a guide for elite Romans more generally. Following his precepts\, Cicero thought\, might be able to save the Republic that he saw disintegrating before his own eyes. \nAs a result\, reading Cicero’s On Duties\, which this seven-week course sets out to do\, not only entails analysing and probing his philosophical arguments in the abstract\, but also examining their relationship to the history and politics of Late Republican Rome\, the concrete context in which Cicero was making them. \nEach week we will focus on an assigned section of On Duties i (15-25 pages each week) that you will be asked to read in translation in preparation for the class. The main goal of the class is to discuss and figure out together what Cicero is saying in the respective sections. You will also be introduced to what other scholars have made of Cicero’s arguments and how they fit within ancient philosophy more generally. \nTo book\, please email info@irisproject.org.uk \nFor more information and courses\, please visit our website at www.eoccc.org.uk \n

SUMMARY:Dr Stephen Heyworth will be giving a talk on 'Aeneas the Villain' at Sherborne Girls\, Dorset\, Monday 23 March
DESCRIPTION:Monday 23 March at 5pm \nThe talk on ‘Aeneas the Villain’ begins by acknowledging that Aeneas is a hero\, but tries to bring out the way in which Virgil has written his epic so that an attentive reader is enabled and at some points compelled to see the poem’s protagonist as socially inept\, emotionally stunted\, morally questionable\, deceitful\, conniving\, nasty; in short\, a villain.  He considers Aeneas the lover\, the family man\, the teller of tales\, the betrayer of Troy\, the wager of war. \nStephen Heyworth has been Bowra Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Wadham College since 1988; throughout this period he has taught textual criticism and Latin palaeography to undergraduates and Masters students as well as giving lectures and classes on Latin literature (especially poetry of the first century BC). Together with his Wadham colleague\, James Morwood\, he has published a commentary for students on Propertius 3 (Oxford\, 2011). His current work concentrates on the text\, manuscript tradition and contexts of Ovid’s Fasti and will lead to a commentary on Book 3 (CUP). \nAttendance is free. \nPlease contact Rachel Allen on rma@sherborne.com if you would like to come. \n

SUMMARY:Nicholas Denyer to speak on 'The Origins of Justice'
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 23rd March at 4.30 pm\, Mr Nicholas Denyer will be speaking on: \n‘The Origins of Justice’ \nWhy be just? Why be nice to other people? One obvious answer is that you will be punished if you aren’t. But the obvious answer raises new questions. For example\, why be nice if you won’t get caught? The thinkers of classical Greece had a plausible\, and unsettling\, answer to all these questions. In this talk\, Mr Denyer will be looking at that answer\, exploring problems from the classic Prisoners’ Dilemma to the response of the island of Melos to Athenian aggression. \nMr Denyer is Fellow and College Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Trinity College\, Cambridge. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with expected numbers as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 20th March. \n
