DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 25th February at 4:15pm at Highgate School N6 4AY\, Dr Helen van Noorden (Girton College\, Cambridge) will be speaking on how the ancient Greek tragedians responded to epic. This is the fourth Douglas MacDowell Memorial Lecture\, which is an annual event.\nApologies for the short notice\, but all are very welcome indeed. The talk may be particularly useful for those studying A-level Greek or Classical Civilisation\, but will be accessible to anyone studying Classical subjects.\nThere will be light refreshments available. SUMMARY:Year 11 and Year 12 Philosophy Study Day - 17th February 2015
DESCRIPTION:On February 17th 2015 Corpus Christi and the University of Oxford Faculty of Classics will be holding a Philosophy Study Day\, aiming to introduce both Ancient and Modern Philosophy to Year 11 and Year 12 students. \nThe day will include introductory information to the subject\, two taster seminars\, lunch in the main dining hall\, a College tour with current students\, and in-depth information on the Oxford admissions process. The day is entirely free of charge. A poster advertising the event can be downloaded here. \nThe day will focus on the topic of ‘freedom’. The smoker wonders: did I act freely or am I addicted? The besotted lover: did I act freely or was I transported by passion? The criminal: did I act freely or was it social conditioning? The depressive: did I act freely or was I determined by brain chemistry? The fatalist: did I act freely or was it foreordained? You can be led to ask yourself about your freedom from many starting points. But how should you go about answering? In this Philosophy taster workshop\, participants will work with Oxford tutors to try to understand the nature of freedom\, and to see how contrasting ancient and contemporary concerns may nevertheless give rise to the same puzzles about it. They’ll also come to appreciate some of the different ways in which philosophers have attempted to solve those puzzles. \nIt is anticipated that there will be significant interest in this day\, so please fill in the application form  by January 9th. All applicants can expect a reply by January 16th. A key part of the process of deciding who will gain a place on the day will be through reading the personal statements provided. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 4th February at 4.30 pm\, Dr Armand D’Angour will be speaking on: \n‘Ancient Greek Pop’ \nIn the fifth century BC a new style of music captivated listeners in ancient Athens. Associated with the dramatist Euripides\, some of whose music survives on papyrus\, it was hugely popular and led to the rise of star musicians. Because critics like Plato disapproved of it\, the ’New Music’ was ignored for millennia; but this ancient equivalent of pop music has recently become the focus of exciting new scholarship. What did it sound like\, and how did it affect its audiences? \nArmand D’Angour is Associate Professor in Classical Languages and Literature and Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Jesus College\, Oxford. He has a particular interest in reconstructing ancient Greek music\, and is also a well-known concert cellist and pianist. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. This event will be part of Warwick University’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. \nSupporting the performance\, we are organising a series of lectures and seminars specifically for school students to link in with Latin\, Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama and English syllabuses at GCSE and AS/A2 (no previous knowledge of the subject area or play will be expected). These include: \n–     An introduction to the world of ancient theatre \n–     An examination of the main themes of the Thesmophoriazusae \n–     A comparison of the different forms of ancient comedy \n–     Close analysis of several ancient comedies and their relationship to tragedy \n–     An investigation into the links between ancient drama and modern drama \n–     A study of the place of women within ancient Greek culture \n–     A workshop on the problems and opportunities of producing ancient drama in \nthe modern era \nThe day will begin at 11am and finish at 5pm. SUMMARY:Stephen Heyworth to speak on Ovid's Metamorphoses
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 21 January at 4.30 pm\, Dr Stephen Heyworth will be speaking on: \n‘The Metamorphoses as an Epic of Change’ \nDr Heyworth is Bowra Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Wadham College\, Oxford. He will be focusing his talk on Book 3 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, the AS level verse set text this year. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 20th January\, we are delighted to announce that the East Oxford Community Classics Centre will be running an Ancient Astronomy Day!\nThe day will involve a series of workshops and lectures run throughout the day by the British Sundial Society on Greek and Roman sundials\, as well as Professor Mike Edmunds from the University of Cardiff who will be speaking to groups about the Antikythera Mechanism. SUMMARY:Recent Discoveries at Chedworth Roman Villa
DESCRIPTION:I would like to invite everyone to two events that the Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association are holding in the coming months.  \nOur first event is a Christmas Social\, to be held at the University of Birmingham\, on Wednesday 3 December 2014 at 6pm. Professor Simon Esmonde Cleary will be speaking about recent discoveries at Chedworth Roman Villa\, and after the talk there will be drinks and canapés\, along with a chance to meet other Classics teachers\, speak with academic staff and\, of course\, celebrate Christmas and the end of term! \nTickets for this event will be £8  each and available from Hayley Graham\, our publicity officer\, at HJG328@student.bham.ac.uk. Please email her to reserve tickets by Friday 21 November\, so that we can arrange the catering.  \nOur second event is a Teachers’ Day to be held at the University of Birmingham on Saturday 7 February 2015. Sessions are planned on how to approach the 8 and 10 mark questions on both the OCR and WJEC GCSE literature papers\, how to use material culture in the classroom\, including a chance to handle objects from the Classics Department Museum\, and strategies for teaching Classics that can be taken from MFL teaching. The day\, including lunch\, will cost £50.
