SUMMARY:International CICERO Competition 2022
DESCRIPTION:After a two year hiatus owing to Covid\, the 2022 UK round of the International Cicero Competition will be taking place again this year.  In view of the continuing restrictions and challenges faced by schools\, the competition will now take place online rather than in individual centres\, but as before it will consist of three parts (a team and an individual quiz on a classical civilisation topic) and a Latin translation test.  Schools will be able to complete the three tests in their own time in the week between 26 March and 1 April.  The theme for this year’s competition will be the nature deities\, from the pantheon through to strictly localised gods and goddesses.\n\n \n\nThe entry fee for this year’s competition will be £7.50 for each school.  The entry fee will help to fund prizes for the winning teams.\n\n \n\nFor further details of the competition\, and to enter\, please contact the UK organiser\, Ian Tompkins\, ian.tompkins@ellesmere.com.

He is also a former director of the Institute of Classical Studies in London and a Professor of Ancient History at St Andrews. He had degrees from Oxford and Cambridge and has taught at both universities and at the University of Leicester. His last books are The Life and Death of Ancient Cities\, A Natural History and Rome\, and An Empire’s Story\, the second edition of which has just been published. He has published widely on the history and archaeology of the Roman world. \n\n\n\nDr Mai Musie: \n\n\n\nMai is an ancient historian\, a Public Engagement and Heritage Officer at Swansea University\, and co-founder of the Classics in Communities project based at University of Oxford. She has worked in higher education for the last ten years on access\, outreach\, and heritage projects including running the outreach programme for the Faculty of Classics\, Oxford. Storylines were drawn from modern representations of the Roman past that had already given women larger roles to play than those on offer from the primary sources. Gesture\, words and accompanying music often worked to colour a Roman woman’s story in empathetic terms. DESCRIPTION:From the folks at KCL… \nKCL Greek Play 2022  \nWe are excited to announce that the King’s Greek Play 2022 (22-24 June\, 2022) will be a brand new response to Sophocles’ Theban cycle\, created by current KCL students. The performance will incorporate original ancient Greek text and new writing in order to present a work that speaks to the social and political consequences of an unprecedented pandemic\, civil disobedience\, and the place and responsibility of an individual within society. Telling the mythical story of Oedipus from the perspective of his courageous daughter Antigone\, this year’s Greek Play will examine how our history can shape our actions and beliefs\, as well as reflecting upon the unexpected ways in which the present moment might shape the lives of future generations. This performance will continue KCL’s recent history of pushing the boundaries and conventions of ‘the Greek Play’ to explore how contemporary performance of Greek drama can help us engage with the fraught times in which we find ourselves living. \nThis year’s play will again be ideal for those studying Classical Civilisation – Oedipus the King is a prescribed text for the OCR A level syllabus – as well as students taking Classics\, Drama\, and English. \nThe play will be performed at the Greenwood Theatre\, London Bridge (SE1 3RA) from 22-24 June 2022 (19.00 nightly with 14.30 matinées on the 22 and 24). Evening performances will be preceded by pre-show events at 18.00 featuring leading scholars; these are free to ticket holders for the subsequent performance. Bookings for schools will open at the end of February. DESCRIPTION:King’s College London Summer School  \nIntensive courses in Ancient Greek  \nIntensive courses in Latin \nThis year King’s College London is again running two 6-week courses (4 July – 12 August\, 2021) in Ancient Greek and Latin as part of the KCL Summer School.  These courses offer students who have not previously had the opportunity to study Greek or Latin intensive training designed to bring them from complete beginners to a point where they are able to read simple texts.  They are ideal for students who intend to study for a Masters or Doctoral degree to get ahead during the summer\, thus acquiring an essential skill for their future research. They are also appropriate for teachers\, undergraduates\, mature students and anyone with an interest in the Hellenic or Roman world. \nTeaching will take place on campus\, but there is an option to join the classes remotely for students who are unable to travel to London. \nIt is also possible for complete beginners to take just the first half of the course (4 July – 22 July)\, and for those who already have a basic knowledge to take the second half of the course (25 July – 12 August). DESCRIPTION:he Belfast Summer School is open for registration. Students can register for one or two weeks online\, from Monday 4th July until Friday 8th or Friday 15th July. For those who wish to attend face-to-face classes\, we are delighted that a one week Summer School will take place at Queen’s University Belfast from Monday 18th July until Friday 22nd July. Classes are available in Latin and ancient Greek from Beginners to Advanced levels. New for 2022\, there will be a class in Old English for Beginners.\n\n \n\nFurther information can be found here.
